The Top 100 Final Fantasy characters OF ALL TIME!

Hi there. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy later this year, I've decided I want to try and find out who the most popular FF characters ever are. So, what I need is two things from you:

1. Obviously, who your favourite characters are. They can be from anything within the FF franchise (yes, even Mystic Quest. It's none of my business if you want to be tarred and feathered). You can nominate as many characters as you want (doesn't matter if it's 1 or 1,000).

2. I want as many fans to get involved in this as possible, so I would like to ask where else I should ask for votes (other than this site. No offense).

One last thing, please don't criticise other people's votes. I don't want fanboys arguing all through the thread.

And...GO!

Well here is my personal top 9 list of you're interested.

9- Cecil ( FF IV ) He's just a loyal knight to his friends and justice. Cecil puts his friends first before anything. He does anything he can to protect the weak and fix his errors.

8- Zack ( FF VII :CC ) I'm not a fan of Crisis Core personally. I hate the battle system and copy and paste extra missions with Yuffie and Hojo. But Zack is bright, energetic, cheerful and like Cecil, he'll do anything to save his friends.... even his own life.

7- Auron ( FF X) I didn't really like Auron at the beginning, but then finding out his past and his true self that he wasn't hiding away; Auron turned out to be a decent character. He's brave, secretive and wise. Also I felt like he was the true leader of the group, not that annoying blonde douche. -__-

6- Emperor Paramecia ( FF II ) Paramecia or " David Bowie " as I like to call him is high on my favorites list, because he's my most liked bad guy of the series. He's cold, cunning and powerful. Most fans argue between Kefka and Sephiroth being the best villian though personally I believe that David Bowie has it all. David Bowie managed to conquer the lords of heaven and hell. Try and do that Sephiroth and Kefka !

5- Cloud Strife ( FF VII ) I love Cloud even though he gets abused these days from fans who call him emo and a whiny pain. Though they forget or don't know what poor Cloud has been through... alot of pain, torture and mind raping and then Mako Poisoning. Cloud is a misunderstood and complexed hero and is sometimes misjudged, but he'll always just be a poor innocent desiring to make better of himself caught up in evil, greed, manipulation and violence.

4- Vivi ( FF IX ) Just like Auron I didn't really like Vivi at first. I thought that he was always complaining. Though I realized that he's actually quite strong mentally. Poor Vivi goes through alot of racism and teasing, not to mention witnessing a genocide of his own race. That, and he actually has a pretty damn good reason to complain.

3- Princess Garnet ( FF IX ) I feel like Garnet is the toughest chick in the whole series, mentally. Just like Vivi she goes through quite a bit of terror and just like Vivi she overcomes it all. Though I like her more than Vivi because personally I feel like she's a good role model for female players. You don't have to wield a Buster Sword to be strong and you can overcome something that any jerk wants to put you through in life.

2- Rinoa ( FF VIII) She is just awesome in so many words. Because she has a strong and kind caring heart. She also wants to get closer towards Squall for unselfish reasons and not Quistis's " I want you in my bed " -__- Rinoa's desire is just for a troubled teenager to just come out of his shell, so he can be free to live his life without fear of somebody leaving him. She's a good friend and she's just really warm, free and spirited.

1- Tifa ( FF VII ) I really do, after doing alot of thinking about this. That Tifa is my most favourite Final Fantasy character. She's everything that I love and enjoy in a character. She's tough. Check ! She's kind and cares about her friends and other people around her, just like Rinoa. Check ! I don't think that she and Cloud are a couple, but that doesn't mean that I can't love everything about Tifa. !

In no real order...

1. Cecil FF IV- He's got love, a dark story, everything

2. Ramza Final Fantasy Tactics- a noble who gives it all up to do the right thing in his heart, think he deserves some credit

3. Delita- A hero... I mean he did things that might not be... honorable... or right... but he did what he thought was best for everyone... rich or poor...

I swear if there are numerous cloud or sepheroth votes, I feel like you disgraced final fantasy. There are better characters besides those two clowns. I like VII but it is OVERRATED. Thats all. I guess I'll start a kingdom hearts version of this.
 
I'm gonna give my top 3 characters from each series.

FF1 - This one's tough, because there isn't much characterisation in this game. In this one, I'll give my 3 favourite classes instead: the warrior, black mage and white mage. No real reason, other than them being the most useful really.

FF2 - I'm just gonna skip this one...

FF3 - Same as with FF2.

FF4 - Cecil has such a huge transformation that he has to be one of my choices. Rydia is next, because she can use all types of spells...at least at the start. She also uses whips ;) . Last is Rosa: The character design is perfect for a white mage and she is really useful throughout the game.

FF5 - Gilgamesh is one of my top 3 here. How he gets lost in the void with you is a great addition to the final dungeon. Faris is a transvestite pirate, which didn't happen too often in the gaming world as far as I know. Finally I choose Boco, who has smile eyes and dances...you can probably tell that I found this game hard to choose characters from.

FF6 - This is hard to pick characters for, but because a lot of them are great. First off is Terra. She is by far my favourite character in the game, with her green hair and trance ability, where she transforms into a pink esper. Next is Kefka, who is one of the best villains in the gaming world; he's completely crazy, is a mage and has an evil laugh. Last of all will be Mog; while he isn't a major character, it's still fun to use a dancing moogle as a party member.

FF7 - This one's easy enough for me. Aeris is my first choice, because she is the main healer and has such a huge part in the story. Next is Tifa, because she is a tough, biker chick...don't get many of them in games, I don't think. Lastly is Vincent; a vampire turk who can transform because of the experiments performed on him.

FF8 - Quistis gets vote 1. She's a blue mage that can use whips and is very serious. I like that so long as the character design is done right to accompany the personality. Next is Rinoa, who goes through so much but eventually gets just what she wants. The way that she uses Angelo as her limit is also a plus. Lastly is Edea. She has a lot of presence and changes from a villain to a playable party member; I love that :)

FF9 - Vivi is a simple favourite for me. He's the traditional black mage given personality and deals with so much that he has to be at the top of my favourites across all the final fantasy games. Zidane is next, because he's a fun main character as opposed to the serious ones that are always being tossed around in this series. Lastly is Garnet, because she's a strong princess who uses white magic...simple as that.

FF10 - Tidus is my first favourite. He's fun, has lots of personality and is the first sporty main character that I can think of. Lulu is the black mage who looks like a black mage, but not in an over-the-top way. She's gothic, which makes it obvious which class she is intended for. Last is Seymour, who is evil but you don't know until late on. Also has a good character design.

FF12 - Fran and Balthier are interesting enough to look at, but the characters in this game are very boring to me. That's all I can say really.

FF13 - Same as with 12. Vanille is hyper and happy all the time, so I like her, but that's about it.

I hope this wasn't too long-winded and that you could see what I was trying to get across...and that it wasn't too repetitive :)
 
Try the FFXIII forum, it's got more than just the XIII games so try and get responses from there too.

Okay as for my nominees:

Tidus
- I love him. He's my favourite character of all. He gets so much shit thrown at him in his life and he deals with it so well, he never has a mental breakdown or goes off on his own. He takes it on the chin and moves on, and he's such a hero -
giving up his own life for a world that isn't even his own
and never really dwelling on all the bad things, instead focusing on what's happening to others around him.

Laguna
- Almost completely forgot about him. He is amazing, one of the best characters ever. Love his carefree attitude and his clumsiness. He's so human and he goes through such hardships and really works for everything he has, I love the mystery surrounding whether he's Squall's father or not. I think he is, which only makes him even more cool and his past even more interesting.

Auron
- Auron's so cool. We never really get to see that much of his past, but from what we do see I love how he came to care so much about Jecht and the love/hate bond they had. I love how he was so dedicated that he went on to take care of his friends children for all those years. He's such a good leader too and he's just cool :)

Vivi
- He's one of the sweetest characters of all, I love his innocence and how he keeps his head up even after finding out the truth about who he is and what his life will be like. He's an awesome mage, probably the best of all the FFs. Also he looks very cute.

Rinoa
- I love Rinoa. She's one of the strongest females in the FF series, possibly the strongest lead. She stands up for what she believes in and she's not all talk, she heads head first into danger for what she believes is right and she doesn't give up. She keeps spirits high and comes across as naive and silly but there's so much more to her than that, her past and her story in the game shows much more depth to her character than what she pretends to be.

Cloud
- I like Cloud, I like the conflict inside his character, I like his tragic past and I like how he's lost himself and slowly gets himself back over the course of the game. How he's dealt with his hardships is really interesting and makes him a unique character.

Fran
- I just think Fran needs to be nominated. For such a side character her story is really moving, I love how she doesn't give up on finding Fratly and she doesn't give into despair when
he can't remember who she is
instead she strives on and shows how brave she is in the face of pain. Instead of worrying about her personal grief she helps her friends save the world, a very selfless act on her part. Also she's a badass fighter, her abilities saved me many a time.

Cait Sith
- I think I'm one of the only people who actually likes Cait Sith. But it's not so much him that I like, it's Reeve. I love the change of heart he has, although I don't think it's a change of heart as much as he comes to realise that AVALANCHE is not what he thought it was. I think Reeve comes across as a very kind hearted man and his actions later in the game show that he is not a blind follower of Shinra and is brave enough to take a stand and go against his company for what he believes is right.

Garnet
- She undergoes a lot of change over the course of the game, more so than most other FF characters and she is very selfless, always caring about others. I think that's a product of being raised as a princess and so she feels she must constantly think about what she can do for others instead of thinking what she should do for herself.

  1. Yuna - She's determined, courageous, strong, loyal, kind, humble and does everything within her power for others. She respects each and every person she comes into contact with, she doesn't hate, but performs each action out of love.
  2. Laguna - I do wish VIII had shown us more of Laguna. He seemed like my kinda guy. ;P He's strong, reliable and courageous, yet becomes an awkward goof around Julia and Raine. :lew: Around them, he seems loyal, humble and warm. ^_^
  3. Serah Farron - I am one of the few who liked her character in XIII AND XIII-2. I never found her childish, but rather human. Serah has to suffer through a lot in both games. She is less independent in XIII, sure, but she's still growing, and she does grow in XIII-2. A lot. :) She becomes beautiful, determined, independent, courageous. She saves others as opposed to being saved.

  5. Auron - As others have said before me, Auron's a pretty 'cool' character and whilst we see little of his past, what we do see is very effective in explaining his personality, his jaded outlook on life, his cool, calm stance.

  7. Vincent - Don't ask me why I love this guy, I know very little about him. There's just something about him. :wacky: I guess I perceive him as quiet, as harbouring a sad secret...

  10. Red XIII
  11. Lulu - Lulu was quite cold and patronising, but she developed a lot through the game and, like many of the characters on this list, revealed a human side. It took time for Tidus to discover what exactly lay within her heart, but I found that realistic and actually respected Lulu all the more.
  12. Caius - He is, without a doubt, my favourite FF villain. He has human reasons for acting out against others and for attempting to destroy the world. His actions are consequence of his loyalty to a loved one. I didn't want Caius to win, but I empathised with him and felt the importance of his victory. :sad3:

  16. Steiner - He's such a snob and his behaviour to Zidane is hilarious. Yup. It's very easy to ruffle this guy's feathers. :lew:

  19. Freya - Her loyalty to Fratley and her strength as she sought him were both beautiful and admirable. I really empathised with Freya. The depth of her love was evident in her actions.
  20. Paine - I started replaying X-2 recently and have actually found I really like Paine and her dry sense of humour. :lew:

The repeated character name is showing that you are obviously spamming. Please elaborate why you like Kain, and try to add your other favorite characters like what the others did above. OR simply do not post at all when you do not feel like elaborating. Otherwise, I will delete this thread and give infraction.

Spam: one liners which do not contribute to the post. He repeated the same character name about 20 times, without elaboration.

Yes it's alright to nominate 1 character, but if it's without elaboration, it's still considered as spam in this case.

those were the first real identifiable characters in the series. unlike the games prior, they put a lot of emphasis in the personal issue with these two. it was also the bench mark game that hit a ton of new FF fans. sadly.. many strayed away after that game as most were not impressed with VIII. i personally feel that jecht should be on this list. reason being. he became a villian in the game and his own son had to do him in.
