This is the first FF I've ever played. I got at like age 9. I didn't mind it back then. But now since I've beaten VII and X it gets on my nerves. It takes 7 seconds to get from the field to the battle screen. And the random encounter pacing, to me, is terrible. I recently restarted and got to the Ice Cave in the beginning and cut it off. And my battle speed is all the way up. Is there any way around this. Because otherwise it's good and I really want to like this game but I can't get around its slowness.

One way I can think of is to set the camera for battles to fixed. That will cut down on alot of animations during the battles. Also if you are playing this on a PS2, you could try the fast load option from the main menu and see if that helps.

Well it was the last PS1 FF game, it was stretching the system to it's limit as it is. So the loading time is understandable.

As for the battles, the reason they're going so slow is probably because you're speed stats suck at that point in the game. They get faster as the game goes on and your character's stats increase.

I am going to have to agree with him in this, I have noticed that at the beginning of the game the battles are deathly slow...but once you gain some levels and the game gets a little farther the battles get must faster. Plus its worth it to wait the game out, its an awesome game and its one of my favorite games ever.

This isn't possible on PS3?

you could always learn some patience? waiting 7 seconds isn't exactly like the longest amount of time in the world you could wait on something. Once you get used to the pace of the battles, they roll right along. I'm going to have to agree with the other people on this and say that you should stick with it because it really is a great game. I'm replaying it at the moment, myself.

Young people... always in a damn hurry, lol.

Well...yeah. Mr. Idioms is right. Since when is 7 seconds too long? If you don't have time to wait for that, then an RPG is not the game for you in the first place.

yeah just be patient, im sure the average rpg will require a decent amount of your time anyway! just relax, pick your nose, scratch your arse! ^_^

I remember loading cassettes on my old commadore 64, now that took an age to load, a good 20mins!!

lol, the old NES cartridges you had to jiggle to play to get to work, and blow in them. That could take a while, too. Final Fantasy 1 for NES had battles that were even slower than FFIX's, and you had to make sure to hit the right enemies at the right time, because it didn't automatically switch your characters to the next enemy. Half the time, I was left swatting air. And the atari was even older with it's games, though it worked moderately well enough. I still remember enjoying games of pong with the paddles. back and forth, back and forth. And it was fun at the time, too.

Personally, I've always liked a bit of wait time, 'cause it allows me to do something while I play - like text, eat, etc... =] Find positives in it, lol. But I never found it to be that long.

Oh, and increase your speed stat. It'll happen.

Considering that it is a PS1 game and not a PS2 or 3, the speed is understandable. I never really noticed the speed of the game, because the other parts(pros) of the game outmatched the cons.

I never really found the game slow. Maybe because I was playing it on the PC (with an emulator) and not on the PS1...

I once tried to play a little with the emulator's options in order to improve the graphics, and I somehow ended up making the battles ultra-mega-super fast.
But I changed it back because it was too fast :P

You think FF7 is faster than 9! Final Fantasy 7 is slower than the first Final Fantasy. FF9 is damn fast.

I've never played 9, but from what my friends say, its pretty fast, if you're talking about story line wise...

At the beggining i agree, the battleing is bere slow,
but after you gain some levels the speed should pick up, wait it out, its worth it :)

also hate that about ff9..., thats why prefer playing on an emulator and set the fps higher...and actually do that for most games. on boring parts take fps limit off and go through the game at 2000+ fps xD

Patience

I found that the overall game was slower than other FF games, at least in my opinion. The load times didn't bother me too much, and like someone else mentioned, they were pushing the system to it's limits by the time 9 rolled around.

Actually, after having replayed it recently (not finished, but can't/haven't played it in some time), this topic is so true. It's very slow. Loading things in general is a bit tedious. However, my belief is that this game pushed the brinks of PSX (with some improved graphics, it should've probably been released for PS2), so it's understandable in that sense.

But man, you really feel the effects when you're not multi-tasking.

Can't say that I ever really noticed that the load times were drastically longer than the other PS1 Final Fantasies, but I'll take your word for it.

I think one of the reasons I never noticed this before, is because the storyline and the gameplay itself went ahead at a much brisker pace than the Final Fantasy VII and VIII (especially VII). VII and VIII (again especially VII) had many long scenes where you just sat and stared at blocks of text, wheras in FF IX they seemed to have gotten much more efficient at telling the story in a more reasonable tempo. So even if it IX had longer loading times, it seemed faster in other ways.

I never noticed how slow the game was. It was enjoyable, and that was good enough for me. Besides, sometimes waiting can actually be a good thing before the battle actually starts. It gives you (or just me) a slight adrenaline rush. And, to be honest, seven seconds isn't that long.....or it could just be me again.
