Before Grin closed down they were developing a Final Fantasy XII sequel codenamed Fortress. Tons of assets leaked, like the Cid-esque moogle and concept art for Queen Ashe.

A two minute YouTube video also surfaced which is said to be “tech demo” footage from the unreleased game. Since we can’t verify the source we’re going to label this as a rumor. It might be Fortress. It might be a mock up for Chocobo Fantasy. Either way, the video is interesting to mull over as a base for an action oriented Final Fantasy XII follow up with Barbarian dudes.

Hmmm, this looks more like an MMORPG to me than anything else.

Maybe they're taking the same approach as they did with NieR? I can definitely see some similarities. I'm not sure if that character is just a placeholder, but if he's isn't, then that's one major similarity these games already have.

I like the environments, and the chocobos look almost exactly like they do in FFXII, so it is very possible that this is the truth of it being a sequel/spinoff to FFXII.

This. This was the very first thing to pop into my mind when I saw the video mainly because of the character first shown, though I guess it was a WIP so that might have changed. I'm sort of glad it was cancelled mind. A solid and high quality sequel to FFXII would have been great, especially since there was so much potential with FFXII. However, apart from the graphics which were brilliant everything else shown seemed to just look...yeah >.> I couldn't see GRIN doing a high quality story and such like either.

:lew: When I try to play it, it says it's no longer available due to a copyright claim from SE.

TBH, I'm not really one to care about rumours (unless it's a rumour for a game I love e.g. Chrono Cross) so I'm not too bothered about the video or this game until something concrete surfaces. :monster:

Curse the copyright thing! :gasp:

Oh well, you didn't really miss that much anyway, Ewan! It was just some barbarian-like guy (?) going around in a desert-like place (similar to the Westersands in Dalmasca) fighting other barbaric-like creatures. It's basically like an MMO only without other people, as Ariana explained. The guy was also riding a chocobo as well, but that wasn't anything special.

I think Fortress is still in development, though perhaps not in a very quick pace. GRIN fell into debt and closed down under Swedish laws, so SE probably gave the game to another western developer- whoever it is remains unknown. But as this is a tech demo from GRIN, I suspect that if the final product emerges, it might be different.

Still, I hope it isn't cancelled. An action-RPG set in Ivalice would have been a breath of fresh air we need. :monster:

Aha, thanks very much! (y)

And true, it would be cool. I quite like the world of Ivalice despite FF12 not being that great. I loved games like Vagrant Story and FF Tactics so I'd like to see it come back... especially the great music that accompanies it!
