hello :D
so i was just scrolling though some Final Fantasy sits and came across alot of walkthrough sites and i was woundering would you say that reading a walkthrough then playing the game is cheating?
i would say it is...even though sometimes you find yourself stuck and not sure were to go...
i have to confress i did read alot of walkthroughs when playing FFXII and doing those hunts :P

If i had to choose now i would say that walkthroughs should never be made... looking back it didnt make the game fun to play knowing where i had to go and what was around the next corner, made FFXII boring.
But i didnt use it for any of the other FF games (im a good boy)

Q: Walkthroughs.. cheating or being really bad at the game?

Walkthroughs should die :horsebeat: (just like this cow)
:D

Not really.

I prefer playing through a game first with no help, unless I'm really stuck. After the game's finished then I may start again and use a walkthrough, just to help find all the shiz that I left behind the first time.

I bought the Offical Strategy Guide for XII a while back, started using it quite a bit. Wanted to do everything I could without having to play the game for a billion hours to actually find a rare game creature or whatever.

I play through first then use the walk through,. I just think y u ruin the game for yourself if you use a walk through. I like the feeling that Ive achieved something by myself rather than had to be walked through it

2nd time through Il use one so i can 100% the game, I dont think its cherating, just a cop out

I wouldn't class it as cheating, it's just help. Most people will use them on the second time round or when they get really stuck anyway rather than use them straight from the off, yes you'll lose most of the challenge and fun using them straight away but you still have to do the work so I wouldn't class it as cheating. :monster:

I use walkthroughs for games that I have played before if it's been a long time. I used a walkthrough all the way for X-2, mainly because
I really only wanted to see Tidus.
When I finally find my FFX game, I'll probably play it myself. Besides, X-2 had about a jillion sidequests. :-)

No, not really. I mean what if you had someone sitting next to you and they're like OOH GO HERE NEXT, would you classify that as cheating? I figure so long as you're actually playing the game the way it's meant to be played, it's not cheating. I may know where to go next, but I'm still doing all the hard work getting there. It's not like I'm using built-in codes or an Action Reply to actually alter the game itself.

Good god, XII is utterly ridiculous. Not so much the hunts, but that goddamn Zodiac Spear. There is NO WAY anyone is going to know that they can't open 6 random chests or they won't get it, and NO WAY anyone is going to know that a very infrequently spawning chest in the Henne Mines is going to give you a 1/1000 (that's not a typo) chance of getting the spear.

If i had to choose now i would say that walkthroughs should never be made... looking back it didnt make the game fun to play knowing where i had to go and what was around the next corner, made FFXII boring.
So what about all the completionists out there and people who like to do sidequests? They're gonna be fucked. You try doing the chocograph sidequest in IX without a walkthrough, it's near impossible. And what about getting the ultimate weapons in X?

Oh, and it wasn't your walkthrough that made XII boring, it's boring anyway.

You think that.

Nah, wouldn't say it was cheating to use a walkthrough, I use it atm for X and XII, simply because I want to get everything 100%, and don't want to miss anything out. I just use it for like, little secrets really that are not that easy to workout.

made FFXII boring.

You're not the only one who thought it was boring. =(

I don't think using a guide is cheating nor makes the game boring. Guides are very useful sometimes because if you're somewhat of a completionist such as I, you can easily miss out of hidden items and events without using a guide.

In Crisis Core, I played the game without a guide and there were many items I missed out such as the Phoenix materia. The game didn't tell me a clue about it. And as Rockman X said, without a guide map, you would never be able to complete FFIX chocograph side quest.

We should be lucky that we have guides now. Back in the Nintendo/SNES era there weren't many guides available which made games harder than they were.

No I do not think that using a walkthrough is cheating (however, that is probably because I always use them on my first run through). For people like me who suck at these kind of games, a walkthrough is almost a necessity.

There is nothing more annoying than being stuck at a certain point in a game with no idea where to go next or having to make a decision which could determine whether or not it is possible to get a certain item later on in the game.

I have used a walkthrough for every FF game I have played besides DoC, CC and Tactics (where I only used the guide for the sidequests). I can honestly say that I probably wouldn't have been able to beat the first few FF games I played if I didn't use a walkthrough and if I didn't beat them, then I may not have become as hooked on the FF series as I am today.

You think that.

Why yes, I do think it was boring :awesome:

It's not so bad in action games, but yeah, in RPGs...things aren't always so clear about where you're supposed to go next or if you need to fill a certain criteria before you can move on...ironic considering that RPGs are usually pretty linear.

And my god, forget about certain items, let's use Chrono Trigger as an example. It's got 13 different endings, and nobody is going to figure out how to get each one unless they have something telling them how.

LOL.

Looks like somebody missed their chance to merge or close this thread.

I'm on the fence with walkthroughs. On one hand, they could be used to anticipate other surprising and 'catching-you-off-guard' moments, whereas on the other they could be used for that one boss that you can never get passed on your own only to find it has some stupid loophole in its attack pattern.

I'd not define a walkthrough as a source of cheats, but more as something that ruins the challenge of figuring things out of your own accord; it's a help guide, not a cheat book.

It's not cheatings and it's not being really bad at the game. Using a gameshark is cheating and being really bad at the game (unless you are just using it for fun or whatever, but I don't use them period.)

I look at using a Walkthrough as using it for help. Some people use it to help them all throughout the game, some people use it only if they are stuck in the game, and some people use it just to make sure they find all the items and do all the sidequests when they are available. The walkthrough does not help you achieve these items in the sense that it fights the battles for you to get there. You have to do all that on your own.

I personally just use the walkthroughs to make sure I get everything in the game and make sure I do the sidequests when they are available. Im such a perfectionist that I have to make sure I get everything in the games.

I did it without using a walkthrough. :awesome: It was annoying as hell but for some ungodly reason, I was determined to find them all on my own.

Agreed.

I don't really see using a guide or walkthrough as cheating. Like others have said, you're not altering the gameplay in any way like giving yourself infinite hp or strength. Some people are perfectionists and like to get everything on their first playthrough. And sometimes you get stuck and get tired of running around trying to figure out what the hell you're supposed to do.

I like to buy strategy guides with my games for collection purposes. I rarely use walkthroughs or guides on my first play through a game unless I'm in a bind and can't figure out what to do. For example in BOF 3, I wandered around the damned desert for nearly 10 hours because the guy directing you gives you the wrong directions. -__- I'll use guides/walkthroughs when I play through the game again to try and get 100% completion. One exception is FFXII. Halfway through the game, I figured I wouldn't be playing it again so I started using the guide to complete all of the side quests/hunts.

Good lord, major kudos to you then O_O

They do sometimes make for nice collectors items. The FF12 guide is utterly useless, save for maps and equipment/items lists, but it's sure nice to look at. Have it sitting on my shelf right by my FFX clock, actually :awesome:

I'm kind of strange, typically I'll use them on my first playthrough, but I won't go for 100% completion. Usually it's not until a second or third playthrough when I try to go for it...or in the case of FF9, not until my sixth playthrough.

Still though, I really don't like being clueless. Typically the walkthroughs I use are spoiler-free, so I know where to go, what levels I need to be, but I'm not ruining anything for myself as far as the plot goes.

I did the same thing XD.

I don't find walkthroughs as cheating in my opinion. They are there to help when you get stuck.

The only walkthrough I have ever used was for FFX-2 and I used that the first time I played the game in order to get 100% so I could see Tidus at the end. XD

Other than that I have not used another walkthrough for any of my games but I still don't see them as cheating.

Nah, I don't think so.

I used a walkthrough for FFX-2 to get 100%, which I didn't even get. Then I was so used to it, that when I decided to play FFIX next, which I recently beat, I couldn't help but use a walkthrough halfway through. I'M ADDICTED.

Hmm.. I woulden't say a walkthrough is cheating, gameshark is cheating, glitches are cheating.

However, i never use a walkthrough as i find it more fun to find out thing's for myself. But, the first time i played FF7 for the psone i used a walkthrough to get the golden chocobo, as because it was my first time, i had no idea what to do. And i was younger.

I wouldn't use one on my first play of a game, but afterwards, I see no harm in referring to one for help with a few extra bits I may have missed out on :)
