What are the Best of the FF series? (Going to buy old PS Consoles!)

I'll make this as short as I can: I'm an Xbox gamer, so I never got to play the Final Fantasy games until FF13, 13-2 and Lightning Returns was released for the 360. I love the original FF13, but I'm disappointed with the sequel installments. I'll go into detail in another post...

Anyway, I'm having a birthday gathering this weekend with just my parents, older brother and me and I always get spending money. (I'm disabled, can't work, so this explains the spending money privileges.) I decided I want to buy a used version of the PS2 and PS3 so I can play some of the old FF games. I only know what I've seen from clips of gameplay and cutscenes throughout the years, so I don't have an extensive knowledge.

So, the reason for this post is, will anyone give me a list of the best of the FF games for the old PS consoles? Just leave me a list and maybe if you want to explain why you think the ones you've chosen are the best? I really want to get into the FF series more. I really love the series and is one of the best escapes for me! FF is one of the top things I have reason to live for. Not sure if that makes me pathetic or shallow or stupid, lol.

All of the main numbered titles native to those consoles. For the Playstation; VII, VIII and IX. For the Playstation 2; X and XII.

I'd generally say stay away from anything before VII though. I-VI are (pretty bad) ports and are best experienced on other systems. They are good little games though, especially VI, so if the Playstation is the only option then go for it.

Yeah I noticed most of the FF games are on the original play station. I was hoping for more game options for the PS3 as I'm also interested in playing the Uncharted trilogy. But all I can find it a re-mastered version of FF X/X-2. (I already own FF13 on Xbox 360, threw away my 13-2, and possibly considering getting Lightning Returns for my 360)

For the PS2 I found: Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus & Final Fantasy XII. Are either of these any good to play?

Also, I found a few FF games that say "online" and I'm unsure if they mean the MMO's or just have online capabilities? Here are the ones I found, tell me if they are regular games with online optional abilities or for MMO's: FFXIV A Realm Reborn; FFXI Chains of Promathia & FFXIV Heavensward;

For the PS4 is this online or regular offline game with online optional: FF Type-0?

Don't mean to sound like a newbie, but I kind of am since I'm just now playing the games! I've loved FF series for a lot time, but only as an observer. Now I can experience them and have found older PS 2 and 3 for real cheap. And since many are on the PS1 I might get that one at some point. I own an old super Nintendo, so I love older style games. I'm into Zelda series as well, but have only played a few of the games. That's how I got introduced to FF, searching for other fantasy games like Zelda!

Anyway, thanks in advanced for future posts!

Okay so I found this website: http://www.thefinalfantasy.com/games/
And it gives all the infor I need about the various games, platforms they are available on and how they connect or are different from one another. I got my list and looks like I'll be purchasing a PS1, PS2, PS3 and a Nintendo DS which can also play older GameBoy Advanced games. Most of the FF games are on the PS1 and the Nintendo DS/Gameboy Advanced. And Amazon is a great place to find the best deals.

Thanks for the responses! I'll be occupied with FF for probably the rest of the year :P

Personal opinion;
Generally most final fantasy are available in multiple ports be it PC, PS1 / SNES etc.

In manner of taste to summarize if I can i hope,
Considering that FFXIII is quite a big change if thats what got you started compared to the original ATB and etc in the original series, I suggest
FFIX is a good start. It is one of the more even, balanced, modern yet classic, great touch, good dialogues and decent graphics.

If you're the type that likes to completely 'immerse' yourself in the entire game. FFVII should be enjoyable for you. Since some might consider the story plot and direction 'heavy' but actually it gives plenty of story and ride.
The spin offs like FFVII-DOC, or FFVII-CC are actually enjoyable too if you'd go lengths just to comprehend the story. I'm pretty strong fan of FFVII storyline so I enjoyed them; satisfactory but I suggest you play the main FF before you play these on the PSP/PS2.

If you would like to change direction to something more vintage, go to FFIV. It has a good story plot as well. I'm not sure about the after years sequel though( This one if you 'd like, get the re-rendered graphics. The one on the DS I think) Unless you don't mind playing it on the original SNES like graphics. but the touch is good too.

If you want a FF with slightly more challenge, try FFVI. Its very good too, great story plot, great blend of party choices and storyline together, great antagonist, plenty of liberty;complete opposite of linear if I'd say so myself. I think you'd like this one especially if you like to choose strategies and parties of your own.

If you want a bigger challenge then perhaps try FFV. I haven't play finished but I heard its pretty tough compared to the others(still on the go..I wish to try FFXIII in the future too.)

If you wanna try a FF with a different gameplay mechanics try FFVIII, It has the new Junction system. I'd say the story has some little holes that they missed to fill I'd say the romance you may/may not feel it depending on your gameplay choice & party members. However I find the game rather in-between feel since they had a different 'drawing system' approach, but once you grasped it, its actually a pretty fun game.

FFX & FFXII I didn't get to try them but I heard they are great too, but they are slightly more 'contemporary' after the FFIX touch.

Just saying to help save you money there if you're getting a ps2 you won't need to get a ps1. You're ps2 should be backwards compatible as I doubt there are any used one being sold that are not, so you can play your ps1 games on the ps2. As for what ones of the older FF's to play, I would say the VI-X range as all are good in their own way and have different mechanics to work around. To answer an earlier question, yeah FFXI and XIV: real reborn are online MMO FF's so you need to not only buy the game but pay a sub fee each month to play. Not many play XI anymore but a fair amount of us do play FFXVI atm on the Lamia server, so if you get it feel free to join us.
