Is it the summons? the story, what?

What things does a final fantasy most definitely need?

:eek:uttahere:

Only 2 things for me

Good story
and
NO damn real time flashy action battle system

Well... That's actually a hard one... I don't mind the real time systems... Although I still prefer the good all turn based and ATB systems. :P

However, to me it's not really the battle that makes an FF game, but the characters and to a lesser extent, the plot. I mean, you could recycle the same backstory, changing just a few key points, and as long as the characters are new, refreshing and believable I'd probably still enjoy it...

So yeah... It's definitely the characters and their development that make an FF game for me. :P

Well, the title itself makes the game what it is. As for anything else, I would say things that make Final Fantasy memorable to the player. Like, for instance, summons have appeared in nearly every FF game, turning them some type of signature. But, for it to be a true Final Fantasy, I'd say the characters would be making the most impact. I mean, look at Cloud, he's been an FFVII icon for years. FF games are all about the characters and the storyline that binds everyone together.

I can only think of the name, summons and probably CGI which SE are famous for, other than that I don't think it hugely stands out above any other RPG. The majority of RPGs seem the same anyway, just with the odd difference here and there :jtc:

Easily, each Final Fantasy holds a new cycle of some sort, or an underlying ancient agenda trying to be fulfilled. Imho, the anticipation of the leveling system and the way the world looks is what gives each new Final Fantasy its unique substance.

A fantastic villain who could exist in no other world but the one created in that particular title. :ryan:

Really, would the story of VII be half as good without Sephiroth sticking his sword in to the relevant people? Would it have been a fraction as famous if it was simply a story about a love triangle, or a terrorist group? What would XII have been without Vayne, Cid or Venat? It'd be another war game.

I suppose as long as there's a bit of agonising torment for one of the characters, every player will be happy. :dave:

Also, try not to let to let the posts become too vague and short; this particular thread is open to a great deal of discussion.

in my case,

swords/bow+arrows/lances/etc., not much for guns, 1 charecter with a gun is ok

magic is a must

unique worlds, nothing too close to our world

and sweet charecters...thats all for me

The title! The only thing all FFs share

But there are other things like:

Summons
(Shiva, Bahamut, etc)
Equipment (Rising Sun, Masamune, etc)
Abilities (Black/White/Red/Blue Magic, Armor Break, etc)
Transports (Boat, Airship, Chocobo)

Jobs :ninja:
Gilgamesh :sparta:

Cid :santa:

Moogle :moogle:

Chocobo :chocobo:

Strange names

Optional Bosses :jtc:

Story, characters, battle system, summons/espers (whatever) bosses, destruction, chocobos, re-occuring character names, sad, happy, epic, boss MUSIC, the entire rainbow of emotive moments and a nice long journey :)

To me it used to be that with each installment we got a brand new universe to explore, but with all the FF spinoffs and most Final Fantasy games since FF X having very similar design ethics, that is unfortunately not as big a trademark as it used to be.

So I'll have to say the storyline as well as all those little things that makes Final Fantasy Final Fantasy (chocobos, summons, airships, the spells, etc, etc.)

Gotta love the "logic" in this thread. By half the definitions it seems that half the games in the series apparently are not "Final Fantasy"s

A larger than life storyline involving an epic quest with good characters, as well as the "Final Fantasy" title. As long as it has those, I'll consider it a Final Fantasy. I'm not too picky.

For me, it is the story, each game is in a special age, long past, or far future, they all also have a very special story/world/happenings that is unlike anything we would ever encounter in our world. Which is why I think it deserves the 'fantasy' because the games are more or less like a fantasy.

The franchise to its name, or in other words, the title "Final Fantasy".

I say this because every category you can think of is snuffed by one or more games in the series.

Gameplay? Well we had ATB going for a good long stretch, then came CBT in X, and then they went and borrowed from the "LoopHold" system of KOTR.

Music? This is subjective, of course, but I really don't think anyone could say that they liked every soundtrack thus far.

Atmosphere/Settings is a no as well. We went through 5 installments of "ye olde" theme (for lack of a better classification), to VI and this fantasy steampunk world, to VII and its kind of contemporary feel, to VIII with its futuristic sci-fi setting, etc... IX was different from X. XIII looks like a return to futuristic themes, etc...

Character Classes doesn't work either. They're everywhere in jrpgs now. And games like VII and VIII broke the class thing.

Character development? While most FFs do contain very fleshed out characters with great stories, motives, and/or personalities - this isn't true for every installment. XII offered little development to its characters, and was a lot more plot-oriented.

Difficulty? Greatly dropped over the course of the titles.

They don't really share much, apart from the marquee things like Chocobos and Moogles. But it could be argued that the stories or genre of stories bring them all together, although that doesn't necessarily set them apart from all other JRPGs.
