I am playing FF6 now for a wek or so and already I get the impression the the Empire is more evil then shinra. I found Shinra to be greedy beyond words and they cared only for money and nothing else.
But when I played FF6, I saw that the Empire just goes over bodies and cities. They just trample everyone under their boots. Kefka, the nasty bugger, poisons a castle to just get it over with fast. :holyshit:

Thread Moved to General Discussion

I guess I'd say The Empire was more rotten, what with blowing shit up, poisoning people and what Kefka did to the World when its the WoR, and that beam thingy he has to melt things, or whatever it does. ShinRa just seem to be after power and money. I'd probably say the employees within ShinRa were more corrupt though.... bhut I think rotten is the wrong word for someone like Hojo xD

I have to say the empire, their goal was to wipe out an entire race of people, and while some of the worst stuff was done by Kefka unknown to the Emperor, like poisoning an entire castle, they are connected to the empire.

SHINRA was jsut being an evil corporation.

Shinra just wanted to manipulate the life source of the planet, and create sustainable energy. It was an electrical company, and it used military force to maintain its power over areas of interest. It wasn't really a conquering force after it obtained the places it was interested in (i.e Junon, Nibelheim etc).
Yes there were evil people in Shinra, they were all corrupt.. Heidegger, Scarlet, Palmer, Rufus, Hojo, the Turks, had all done terrible stuff.

The Gestahlian empire, however, was a conquering force. It wanted domination over the world and wouldn't stop at anything to get it. Wiping out whole peoples, destroying whole towns, killing espers.. Even though most of this was done by just one man, Kefka.

But the empire also contained many good people. Celes and Leo are honourable people that were just caught on the wrong side. Whereas at Shinra most people higher up are relatively evil for most of the game (Reeve, and occasionally the Turks, are an exception).

But the soldiers of both forces do seem to just be caught up in conflicts they don't understand. They see themselves as doing a service for their people, doing good. Both low class Shinra soldiers and Empire soldiers wouldn't consider themselves evil a lot of the time.

But on the whole I will have to say that the empire takes the giant-sized muffin in this discussion. What they did was terrible, and caused much more destruction than I think I have ever seen in an FF game.

Both were evil. The Empire conquering things, and Shinra betraying their own loyal dogs, like Zack. :(
Nor did they care about the people really. They wanted money. Remember, they didn't even bother to fix Sector 7 after they destroyed, trying to frame the heros.

So, I guess Shinra was more evil IMO.

I'd say the Empire were more "traditionally" evil, while SHINRA are more "twisted" evil.

The Empire had the traditional "lets-conquer-the-world-and-be-all-powerful-for-no-apparent-reason-other-than-the-fact-we-can"

While SHINRA weren't about World Domination, but had twisted minds like Hojo working for them. They wanted to control the worlds energy supply, but they also had an elite fighting squad which they genetically tampered with. The Empire may have tried to rule the world, but SHINRA already kinda did, since I believe they had the monopoly on energy supplies, as well as fucking up a lot of people with their experiments.

I think SHINRA were a lot more cruel than the Empire too, destroying an entire section of the city, just to destroy a rebel group, as well as controlling people through fear and intimidation from SOLDIER and the Turks.

Man, i voted on the poll, but i was kinda lazy to post my opinions about why Shinra Inc. should be considered more evil :D
Totaly agree with you there, especially in the Sector 7 part.
I mean come on.
Shinra Inc, is a company based on Lying on the public, getting to it's goal whatever the circumstances and the costs and remember those poor people on Lower Junon having to deal with a polluted sea! :gasp:

Shinra Inc. totaly reminds me of many "evil" Power-supply organizations in the world. *cough*Shell*cough*
:jon:

The Empire thanks to Kefka. While ShinRa never went out of its way to help anyone in its quest for more of the almighty gil, it never harmed folks just for the sake of harming them. A lot of the Empire's actions, however, involved Kefka's schemes, and that clown loved to burn down castles and poison towns simply because he had a blast doing it.

blah blah blah

Well Shinra never planned on destroying the world. Yeah maybe in time it would but Kefka was totally bent on killing all things. put it this way, people are killing this world we call earth slowly by hurting the planets air and trees. But we're not shotting down towns and leaving everything destroyed for the fun of it. Sure we throw a bomb at our enemies now and then but we do try to negotiate. Kefka was just mad. Shinra was too cool to be insaine.:jon:

Mos Def The Empire. The Shin-Ra Electric Power Company is just trying to provide Midgars citizens with a little bit of Electricity. Please pay no mind to Avalance's smear campaigns :nervous:

Tbf, they were more interested in the money than the people, any one opposing ShinRa got their towns burned down or some shit (Corel) and they crushed sector 7 blamed it on Avalanche, just so they could crush a group with only a few members, so they were hardly 'just trying to provide electricity' xD

Not forgetting, they weanted to breed and do research on Aerith/Red XIII - weirdos xD

Although I still thein The Eempire - were the worst, although, I guess it was more Kefkas doing in the first instance, poisoning that water weasnt really a direct order of the empire, t'was his own doing, til he actually became in charge of it all and fucked the whole world up...

Also, maybe your own imput on why you think the empire were worse? Saying ShinRa are just an electirc company isn't really a convincing argument

Mmmm yeeah ShinRa did try the human experiments with cloud, sephiroth, aeris and red XIII. And another good point about Kefka poisoning the town without the empire's permission...
But I posted on the Empire and I think they are worse because they also invaded the world of the summons. While shinra only stayed in their own realm. Although if anywhere else in the universe there would be mako energy, ShinRa would go over there and Cid would get his space dream and never join Cloud and Co. But thats another discussion and I'm going off topic xD

On second thoughts... Perhaps Shinra appears more sinister. As in it presents us with a lot more sinister villains. You know, the type that stand, legs apart, with their right arm in the air facing upwards, letting out a cackling "ahahahahahaha!!!!" while lightning strikes behind them and birds fly away...

Shinra had:
President
Rufus
Scarlet (most fitting the above description)
Heideiger
Palmer
Hojo
The Turks (less so than the above - rather the calm attitude instead)

And then when you consider the people working for Shinra, e.g Don Corneo...

What we see of the Empire is very limited. We only meet a few of them in comparison:
Gestahl
Kefka
Leo
Celes

And Terra who was forced at the begining via slave crown.

Out of those 4 members (if there were any more, please remind me), only the first two are completely and dramatically evil.

So basically Square showed us MORE of Shinra and the inner workings than it did of the Empire, but I imagine that the Empire had other villains within it as well, it's just that they weren't seen in the game. Shinra was probably helped by the fact that roles were spread around relatively equally, and they all kept their given roles and departments... The Empire sent Kefka for most things, so we didn't get to see many other people behind it.

The empire id say.

Shinra at least provided energy so that people could live in heated homes and have a comfortable life, sure it sucked the life outta the planet but isnt that what scientists say wer doing nowaday? Thinking bout it the shinra wernt so bad really.
The empire raided towns, murdered the people and poisoned their water supply. Although on a note most of the wrongs commited by the empire were down to kefka and didnt reflect the oppinion of every soldier they had.

Really most acts of 'evil' commited are orchastrated by a single person and not by the enterprise.Ie kefka and rufus.

Another Mako-filled plane is all that the Promised Land registered as to Shinra.

Shinra was told by Avalanche, so if THEY knew, you can bet SHINRA knew before that. But they'd rather dry up the world's life-force for Gil. Greedy fuckers.
Also, the whole concept reminds me of a darkened, WAY cooler version of what we're doing to our planet...

I would say The Empire was more evil but The Shinra were equally as bad. Shinra drained the planets life source Mako energy right? Which slowly killed the planet as well as they acted like they owned the world anyway. The Empire i felt were more evil because of how they tried to use the Espers for power of the world and such. Forgive me, it's been a while since playing FFVI but i remember it very well of sorts lol

It is an interesting comparison. The Empire is a prototypical expansionist empire, that will do whatever it takes to take over the world. However, their "evil" if they have one is somewhat overshadowed by Kefka's evil, and there are saving graces to the Empire (namely General Leo).

Shinra, on the other hand, fits into what Hannah Arendt would call the "banality" of evil. They are just concerned with making money. It's nothing personal. However, in this seemingly detached view of morality, they end up doing much evil.

Ultimately, I cannot say that one is more evil than the other. Both are capable of much evil, and both are capable of good.

Okay, let's compare for you youngsters:
Mind control: Terra for the Empire, vs. Cloud, Sephiroth, and a little thing called NIBELHEIM for Shinra! Shinra takes this one.
Living experiments: Espers (genocide) vs. SOLDIER, the Cetra, the whatever-you-call-Red-XIII's-race, Vincent, Jenova, Hojo, etc. Shinra wins again.
Mass slaughter of the innocent: Cyan's hometown, who were active enemies of the Empire, vs. SECTOR 7, MIDGAR'S OWN PEOPLE!!!!!!!! Shinra wins.
Total neglect of their people: ...no one for the Empire, vs. EVERYONE WHO COULDN'T AFFORD TO LIVE ABOVE THE PLATE IN MIDGAR FTW.
Opening up Pandora's box: The Espers, Kefka, and the goddesses, legendary monsters, and the total destruction of the planet vs. the Weapons, Jenova, Hojo, Sephiroth, and the basic destruction of the heart of the planet...okay, the Empire wins this one.
Loose cannon: Kefka, who was publicly disgraced but privately embraced, vs. Sephiroth, who was just as much an enemy of Shinra as Avalanche. Okay, the Empire wins here too.
Corrupt leadership: Gestahl, who was partially blinded by power, partially mistaken to believe this power would benefit the world, and partiall duped by Kefka, vs. Rufus. RUFUS. Shinra takes this one too.

Final score: Empire 2-Shinra 5.

I hate to take it to you whippersnappers, but the Empire basically wouldn't kill you if you stood down. Shinra killed you for giggles, and barely bothered to cover their tracks with a cover story.
I mean, this isn't a comparison so much as ANOTHER SLAUGHTER FOR SHINRA!!!
