this may be a pointless thread but I was wondering why did they call this game "Final Fantasy XI", they should have just called it "Final Fantasy Online"

Most likely to entice more people into buying it. But really, I have no clue, it should have been called FF:Online and forgotten about.

I agree. Calling this game FFXI was just a marketing ploy, but I think more people who play without the internet got pissed off. I know I was.

Heh, it's funny then; FFXII would've been FFXI, and then maybe the FFXIII would be FFXII and maybe it would be for the PS2 XD

Lol, good point ^^

Nah I don't see why it's a numbered game either. Can't comment on quality since I haven't played it, but it does seem strange that they would give what's essentially an MMORG a number. Barmy.

It really shouldn't have been given a number, FF Online or something else would have been more appropriate. It doesn't really deserve a spot in the main line, it's just side game, like the Chocobo series and the Ivalice Alliance. Same can be said for FF12.

A very pointless thread, cant believe people still complain about this...

It came after 10... its a Final Fantasy.

Its called Final Fantasy XI: Online
It isnt any less of a Final Fantasy just because you people dont like it, most of which probably havent even played it at all.

It shouldt be numbered at all, it's stupid.

I agree that FF online would have been much more fitting. I'm pretty sure alot of people can't play it through lack of internetz or whatever. I have it but don't play it because I hate playing games on my pc :wacky:

Yeah I always wondered why they named it XI, it suggests it's part of the main series of games when it is clearly not, or atleast, it's not in my opinion.

They should of called it like you've all said, Final Fantasy Online.

Most likely was a marketing ploy. It eventually worked for me, I bought it and played it for awhile. $12 a month got to be a little too expensive if you don't play it all the time though. For MMORPG's, I'd rather go with Guild Wars or some downloadable one. At least there's no monthly fee on those. GW has more strategy in it in my opinion, since there's no power leveling.

The graphics are pretty decent and like starting out with many MMO's, they can be addicting. I liked it more than WoW since that game is just a little too massive. Plus it seemed the majority of people there just hated new people joining the game, where FFXI people seemed to genuinely wanted to get you into it. Maybe because there aren't so many active people in the game anymore. XD

yeah so using your knowledge all the crystal chronicals games, all the Ivalice alliance games, all the other side Final Fnatasy games should be in the main series aswell. after all they are Final fantasy games!

what an idiot :omg:

I never really thought about it having a number, but now that i think about it it is kinda weird. Then again what makes the other games deserve numbers? maybe that is the question that should be asked. Maybe XI fits the criteria to get a number.

LOL i thought the exact same thing....it really shoulda been called like FF 15 or 16.. maybe even 20....cuz you know there are FF's on the Game Boy, the NES, The SNES, The PS1,2, (upcoming on the 3) the Gamecube, the DS,....and others probably...there are wayyyyyy more than 13....so where is that reasoning?

I don't know why its called XI. I know when i heard of it...and the played it. I liked the game, but def. shouldn't be called XI, cuz its not story driven....Really, I couldn't tell you a main staple of story about that game, cuz really it wasn't built on that.

Why is it called World of Warcraft and not Warcraft 4? hmmmm...same thing?

Thanks

All I'm saying is, it came after 10, and it is a Final Fantasy and that is reason enough for it to be XI. Every FF has been different in many ways... It may not fit what you would consider to be a FF game, but apparently for SE(and me) it does.
It has everything any other FF has ever had and a lot more.

I dont care either way, I would play it if it was just FF online or if it wasnt even called FF at all.

btw, it is hugely story driven like most Final Fantasy games.

I'm not saying anything about the quality of the game, i'm saying it shouldn't be in the mainstream series. it should be called FF: Online because all the rest of the main series are all single player games...Crystal chronicals has more to do with the main series than FFXI.

I love you.

It just as deserving of a number as VII or X or IX or XIII.

It's an FF Independant of other installments, and it's the 11th.

And no, Crystal Chronicles doesn't have more to do with the main series than FFXI; all of the Final Fantasy installments with numbers are completely and utterly different, so it can hardly be said that CC has more to do with FF than FFXI when really, they're like independant games.

Numbered Final Fantasies = epic console installments. A cast of 8+ main characters in your party. Solo play experience. Pay for them once and that's it.

XI is none of those, therefore it shouldn't be a number, at least in my opinion.

The same reason they number any of them, Pinky...TO TRY TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD...!!!

They didn't call FFIII FF: Job Class Challenge, FFVII FF: Materia Madness, or FFVIII FF: Junctioning Jamboree! They changed an aspect of gameplay...sure, that included a genre shift, but big deal. If anything, they should have INCLUDED FFTactics into the numbered series...but anyways, who cares? It's a goddamn NUMBER! How does it's name change anything? "What's in a name? A rose...etc" as they say, right?

I'm not sure why everyone is getting the knickers in a knot over a titling issue.

I agree with the minority on this one. I believe this game is completely deserving of it's current title for a number of reasons.

1. It came after 10 and before 12. Considering that Square sticks with integer values, 11 seems to be the logical choice, the only choice.

2. It does have a storyline, like the other games, which can be experienced through playing the in-game missions.

3. The differences, being online, non solo and having a monthly fee, don't make the game so entirely different that it needs to be exiled from the series.

At the end of the day it's just a title. If they called it Final Fantasy Online, well I wouldn't develop a hernia over it.

To me, "Final Fantasy XI: Online", as a title, tells me everything I need to know.

- I know that it was released between X and XII.
- It's an online game.

I still think that's the critical basis of what a title is intended to be.

This debate is "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" all over again! :wacky:

Very valid points, good sir. I concede :neomon:

That movie should never have been made, let alone be called a FF. I try to block it from my memory -__-
