"Squall, I am your father". That would sound like Darth Vader, lolz..

But it kinda sucks how they don't really tell you that Laguna is Squall's dad, although you've known it all along. There's also Kiros saying something about Squall having his mothers eyes...

I don't get it - why didn't he just say it. He was almost about to....

Reading this thread is the first time I have ever even heard of Laguna being Squalls father. I have to say though, it makes some since. Maybe in a sequel or something they will dig in and tell us but as far as storyline goes we can't be sure.

Its extremely likely that he is Squall's dad. Read this article from Wikipedia, for example:

There are strong indications in the game that Laguna Loire is Squall's father. During flashbacks induced by Ellone's power, in which the main characters experience past events through the eyes of Laguna, Kiros, and Ward, Squall is required (by the game) to assume the role of Laguna, despite the fact that any of the other characters in Squall's party may take on the role of Kiros or Ward. If Squall travels to Winhill after Garden is activated, he will encounter inexplicable visions of Raine, a woman to whom Laguna was very close (and to whom he eventually was married, as evidenced by the fact that 'Raine Loire' is written on her headstone in the ending fmv sequence), throughout the town. Ellone also mentions that Raine died—apparently in childbirth—and that she had a baby boy. When Squall is captured, all the Moomba keep referring to Squall as Laguna (it is later indicated that the Moomba recognize people by their blood, suggesting a tie between Squall and Laguna). Toward the end of the game, aboard the Ragnarok, Kiros and Ward make commentary as to Squall's resemblance to his mother and his dissimilarity to his father.[25] Laguna also intends to tell something to Squall, but he opts not to due to the circumstances.

Remember this dialogue???
Kiros: You look a lot like your mother.
Ward: .....
Kiros: Ward says its a good thing you don't look like your father.

How the hell does Kiros know who Squall's mum and dad is....

Because it would trigger too much pain to Squall..

'' Oh hello, oh BTW I'm the one who has hurt you and caused your pain and depression all this time, and is the reason why your life has been a living hell '' ! :0

Think Laguna decided it would best to keep things quiet for him.

Knowing Squall he would of shouted at him and would of fallen deep back into sadness and don't think that Laguna would of wanted that, or feel anymore guilt about the past.

good topic

I guess knowing Laguna and Raine are Squall's parents aren't important enough to the story. As much as I loathe it, the story is about Squall and Rinoa's romance. When I first played through FFVIII, I didn't really look at all the details or chat with Kiros and Laguna so I never knew.

I do admit that knowing that now, I can just imagine how Laguna felt about having his long lost son standing mere foot steps away and unable to say or do anything without fear of upsetting Squall.

I might be wrong, but I think someone mentioned this already somewhere on the site that according to the FFVIII Ultimania Guide, Laguna does tell Squall he's his father after the game, so there's that at least *shrugs*

Well it would be a little awkward... I mean how could you comfortably walk up to someone and say "Hey, I'm your daddy!". Laguna would probably go try and get his leg all cramped up again, it's just one of those things that would be really awkward to go through.

Vader pulled it off, but his voice actor was James Earl Jones, you can't not remain cool and collected when you sound that awesome! xD

I dont really understand what you mean by that? How has Laguna caused Squall pain? He did everything he could to save Ellone, Raine died before he could go back to Winhill to see Squall.
I think Squall probadly knows himself, he can be a bit of a twat but hes not a complete idiot. THe reason Laguna didnt come out and say it imo is because hes shy (remember what hes like with Julia, leg cramp xDD)

I doubt Squall knows, he only meets Laguna once and he never knows what happens to Raine's child.
I think the reason Laguna doesn't tell him as Squall is just about to fight Ultamecia and doesn't need that on his mind, because then Squall wouldn't be able to concentrate properly.
I'm fairly sure that Fusionist is right, that Laguna does tell him after the end of the game.

Yea but after the subtle hint from Kiros and all the trips in the past he must have had suspicions, infact hed be an idiot not to realise.
I mean Ellone reveals that Raine had a child just before she dies and reveals that Laguna is the Father....but the child is sent to an orphanage. Bit of a coinsidense no? :monster: Surely hed put 2 and 2 together and get 4.

Squall himself says earlier on in the game that many children were orphaned at that time because of the Sorceress war. Also Kiros' comment was just a one off and wasn't paid much attention to. Remember he had much more important things on him mind.
When he goes back into past everyone thinks it's only Ellone that they're helping out, and that none of it is related to anyone else in the party.

Laguna could of been there and raised Squall instead of growing up in a Orphanage
When Ellone left, Squall was alone and was sadly heartbroken by loosing his 'Sis'.
If Squall had his Father by his side, Squall wouldn't of had have felt so sad about Sis.

Remember that scene on the airship ? where Squall explains to Rinoa that the reasons why he was so anti-social, stand offish and pushed people away from him is because he was scared that others were going to disappear like Ellone.

If Laguna was by his side, he could of had support and somebody to make his life worthwhile and somebody by his side to make things better.

Kind of meant, that Laguna might of feel guilty for not being there during Squall's hard times in life and leaving him to grow up alone..

Aye but by the time he had returned to Winhill Squall had already been shipped off to the ophanage, his whereabouts unknown to Laguna. Quite interesting though that he chose to stay in Esthar and help there rather than return home to his pregnant wife.

If I remember correctly, Laguna didn't know at that time that Raine was about to give birth to Squall. So he was trying to prevent Esthar from being a threat to Raine and Ellone in the future.

I personally believe that the reason why Laguna did not tell Squall that he was Squall's father is because of the timing. He knew that Squall had alot on his mind and alot he had to prepare for. And I believe, like a few others have mentioned, that Laguna did tell Squall he was his father after the end of the game. It just seems like that would be a better time to tell him.

I just dont think he said it for the simple fact that Squall had so much on his plate at the time, he didnt need anything else to worry about. He said on the ragnorak something about having loads to talk about liets talk when its all over...or some shit. So I assumed he'd tell him once they won the fight against Ultimecia:monster:

I liked all the little hints rather than being told, just outright saying, oh btw, Im yer dad would have been boring

I feel like a moron for just now noticing all of this. @__@ But wow, Laguna being Squall's father... That's deep. Laguna was one of my favorite characters in FFVIII, considering he was almost EXACTLY like me (except I get my quotes right. xD ) but I really can't imagine him being Squall's father due to the personality difference. Still, the facts are undeniable. Now if only Squall could steal his father's random encounter battle theme? xD

well, while the long talk in esthar-ragnarok....laguna talked alot about the past....did say he felt really bad for not being there for Raine and Ellone......and didnt want about Raine because ''its too much for me to remember'' or somth like that......so i guess his past without squall is already hard enough...

also prefer the tons and tons of hints instead of just saying it out.
wish ffx was a little more like that^^

I think it'd be hard for anyone to approach their biological son/parent without knowing them for most of your life. It's why the issue is covered so much in books, films and TV. It's a sensitive issue and also given the seriousness of what Squall is about to undertake, it's reasonable that Laguna thought, it can wait. We'll have the rest of our lives to get to know each other etc.

haha I read this whole thread

Why did he even put Squall up for adoption? Anyways Laguna has problems and he may have worked them out but telling someone like squall "I'm your daddy" would probally get a beat down. Squall has his own problems too and maybe the two just don't wanna pass out and enter a dream.

Yea but after the subtle hint from Kiros

More than anything, I think that was just an inner thought revealed to players, and was not really said. Or like Hal said, wasn't really paid any mind by the characters.

Why did he even put Squall up for adoption?

Laguna wasn't around when Raine gave birth to squall and died. He was in Esthar doing his thing to keep them out of Winhill.

Also, sometime last year this topic came up on FFExtreme and V (aka Aaron, The Man) had told me Square actually confirmed that Laguna was Squall's father some time ago.
