I'm new to the Final Fantasy series. I'm currently playing FF13.

I don't know how to enjoy this game. I've only played about 20mins worth (excluding reading the logs), and it just seems to me that the game is just:

Walk, walk, walk

Battle, Select autobattle

You win!

Walk, walk, walk

Battle, Select autobattle

You win

etc.

So I don't get it... What makes you people like this game? Am I playing it wrong? Perhaps if you people explain what makes you like the game, maybe I will be able to understand it and like it for the same reason...

The story, cutscenes and characters seems great, but the gameplay is so repetitive and dull.

How do I know which attack to use (if I decide to not use auto) and which is best?

Also, when I view the enemy intel, theres a bunch of icons for their vulnerabilities. I can't find anything about that in the manual. What do they mean?

Also, can someone explain in layman terms what the story (at least the beggining - without revealing spoilers) is about and explain what all the terminologies are about? I must be really dumb, because I don't get it!

Thanks PS: BTW this is also my first RPG game. I usually only play FPS & racing games. Is there any video tutorials on the internet that can explain everything in simple terms. Talk about everything in the game and how to play it?

To be honest, I think FFXIII is the worst Example of a final Fantasy. Everything has been watered down and it's pretty much just like a movie in my eyes. but what makes a Final Fantasy a Final Fantasy? I would say it has to be the customisation and empathising with the characters. I admit I didn't feel so much for anyone in FFXIII. Personally I think it was a complete pile of toss, but you can't just the series based on one game, especially the most recent. A Final Fantasy is made epic by all the characters who are just traditionally in every game. Or at least, that's my favourite aspect.

The choices have been dulled down in XIII in terms of battling. There is no real stats anymore in comparisson to the older ones where everything was a factor. the first disc is rather boring though so I would say to be patient as it does get better and there isn't so many painful cutscenes and what not. I do agree with you though, I don't feel there is much skill or tactics to the game compared to the older ones.

I would just slug it out a big longer. 20 minutes isn't really enough time to judge the game. If you don't like it after a few hours, I'd personally say put it down. Though I would say ina lot of FF's it is repetative. But that's what makes it fun, and down right frustrating at times.

I agree, XIII isn't really the FF game you want to use as a reference point. It's built more for advancing story telling while observing combat and making sure you win, but not having to do everything all the time.

A lot of FF games tend to eventually fall into the repetitive battles, and I think XIII (along with XII) was designed to where you don't string yourself out over every battle. But, it's not letting the gamer get the full experience if it is their first FF.

If you like the story so far (which I haven't played it, just read up on it) then continue, even if you have no idea what's going on. FF is a series that you'll always understand (or mostly) what's happening eventually, you just have to stick to it and listen during the dialogue/cut scenes.

If you don't like the story, I suggest picking another FF. If you want a less 'here's everything and go' approach, try X or VIII. Those have pretty good tutorial fights/cut scenes to let you adapt to the game easily. FF's VII and IX are also a good idea, as they are easy to pick up and figure out.

Don't be down because of FF XIII, there are much better ones out there. :D

As others have said, FFXIII is a very different kind of Final Fantasy that strays from the conventional templates of the franchise more than any of its predecessors. If you are really not enjoying this game (and don't worry, you are definitely not alone), please do not let that put you off of the Final Fantasy games as a whole. FFXIII is different. It doesn't feel like a traditional FF game at all. It isn't bad, but it certainly isn't perfect either.

I don't know how to enjoy this game. I've only played about 20mins worth (excluding reading the logs), and it just seems to me that the game is just:

~snip~
The beginning part of the game is rather long before the more interesting aspects arrive. You should keep going longer before you can make a fair judgement. Battles will get more interesting once you have access to the Crystarium system, be able to access the jobs and initiate Paradigm Shifts as you please in battle.

You are right. The beginning is easy and battles hardly much of a challenge as the game holds your hand constantly in this lengthy tutorial.

How do I know which attack to use (if I decide to not use auto) and which is best?
If you know an enemy is weak against, say, fire or something, you can manually choose to unleash only spells like Fire or Fira at the opponent - although if your log has enough data on an enemy's strengths and weaknesses, Auto-Battle will automatically tailor your attacks for you.

Also, when I view the enemy intel, theres a bunch of icons for their vulnerabilities. I can't find anything about that in the manual. What do they mean?
They should be listed in the manual. If not, it doesn't matter too much. I never took the time to fully memorise them anyway, although some are quite obvious, like fire, water, electricity etc.

Also, can someone explain in layman terms what the story (at least the beggining - without revealing spoilers) is about and explain what all the terminologies are about? I must be really dumb, because I don't get it!
That's alright. It is a baffling story for those who haven't read anything about it beforehand.

Basically, you're on Cocoon - this supposed floating metropolis over the planet Pulse. Its government has launched the Purge to seemingly get rid of civilians that have been allegedly tainted by Pulsian magic or influences. Lightning and Snow with their respective allies are resisting this act and fighting against the government.

Fal'Cies are names given to demi-god-like beings tasked with maintaining everything on both Cocoon and Pulse. Fal'Cies can make servants out of humans, branding them with a mark and a task (the tasks are called "Focuses" in FFXIII speak). These servants are called L'Cies and you'll find out more about them later.
______________

As for why I love Final Fantasy - I suppose because they offer mostly great storytelling (my personal favourites are the stories of FFX and FFVI), fascinatng characters, immersive and fictional settings and plentiful amount of gameplay that can literally last you for hours on end.

Yeah, I think it takes more than 20 minutes to actually get into the meat of the game and get a feel for it. The random battles, especially in 13, will be long and repetitive, but later on it will take more strategy and thought to get through each and every single one, and throughout different dungeons you'll get more and more pieces of the story.

I know what you mean though. Lately I haven't been able to just plop down and play an rpg like I used to be able to. I don't know if my attention span has shortened since I was younger, or what, but I have a really hard time playing games with random battles.

The reason why I like Final Fantasy though is because the stories were amazing and inspiring when I was a kid and I'll never forget the experiences and characters and how they made me feel.

Thanks PS: BTW this is also my first RPG game. I usually only play FPS & racing games. Is there any video tutorials on the internet that can explain everything in simple terms. Talk about everything in the game and how to play it?

Well, walkthroughs online can be handy. I'm not sure if there is any video walkthroughs but text could also work.

As for FFXIII, I can honestly say it's a poor game out of the FF series. I haven't played all Final Fantasies but, XIII honestly was my least favorite. I agree that it's so dull and boring. I hate the fact that its so linear and easy at the beginning and later they force you to grind...

Olivia pretty much covered what you needed answered so, i'll skip that part.

As for why I like Final Fantasy: I like how each of them are completely different from one another. The story, the characters, the mini-games. It's so... addicting and you just really get into the game. Final Fantasy is a good series. IX, and X were my favorite out of the series.

Even though you might not like XIII all that much, I strongly recommend playing through other FFs because it's a fantastic series I think.

final fantasy

I like it because-

battles- may seem repetitive. but the more you battle, the more you level up the more cool new ability's and attacks you learn, also there are so many different kinds of monsters you can fight witch are all unique in their own way.

the story and characters are always great. I always get sucked into the plot, and cant put it down, and before I know it the suns coming up. I get attached to the characters and care what happens to them

oh yeah and the story is sometimes hard to follow, I usually dont know whats going on allot of the time no matter how much I pay attention, but youll find that you know more then you think nd buy the end of the game it should all come together when I get lost I just go on the FF wiki and read the plot up to where I am, just so im clear, and to make sure I didnt miss anything, but that's just me. I have a hard time paying attention. hahaha

its fun to run around and explore, defeat hidden bosses, get rare items. find cool places to train, meet cute moogles

and nothing is quite like that accomplishment I always feel when I achieve something really difficult in the game. or when I finish the game im always really proud of myself

How will I know which weapon is a fire weapon and which is a water weapon?

Also theres so many items, weapons, inventory? etc etc. do I need all of these? What are things other than items and weapons used for mainly? Are they important.

Also, the crystalization system, will it be explained in the game how to use it? OR is it something i have to figure out?

And the paradime shift?

This game is so complicated, im worried that im going to end up sticking with the basic controls/attacks because i wont understand how to do the other stuff and i wont be able to enjoy playing the game how it should.

well XIII isnt a good final fantasy game to start with. i would suggest X or VII. After youve beaten those XIII wil seem alot simpler.

Don't worry about that. As I recall, FFXIII doesn't really have any set elemental weapons. Most of the weapons do grant your characters passive abilities in battle (such as ATB +1) if equipped. You can add elemental effects to weapons if you have the Synergist role in battle to cast spells like "Enfire" and "Enfrost".

Also theres so many items, weapons, inventory? etc etc. do I need all of these? What are things other than items and weapons used for mainly? Are they important.
You have staple Final Fantasy items such as Potions and Phoenix Downs. They're quite important - but arguably less so in this game because as you've noticed, characters are immediately healed after each battle. I've never really used that many of these bar the occasional Remedies and Eye Drops etc.

You don't need all the weapons you acquire at all. In this game, once the function becomes available, you can upgrade your current weapon using the components (that are seemingly useless at first) that you collect from battles now and then. Other forms of equipment can be upgraded as well. In the earlier chapters, this function isn't necessary, although you many need to do it later on when things get tougher.

Also, the crystalization system, will it be explained in the game how to use it? OR is it something i have to figure out?
There should be a tutorial somewhere. I can't fully remember now. But it's rather straightforward once you examine it closely. You unlock new augments and abilities by spending the alloted amount of CP (gained from battles) required.

And the paradime shift?
You'll get used to it, don't worry. It does tell you how to use it when you get it. If you're still unsure, you can consult the tutorial in the Datalog.

It becomes more crucial later on, and you can use the earlier chapters to practise. It's just a case of customising a list of job combinations (e.g. COM, COM, COM for the offensive and MED, MED, SEN for the defensive) and switching around with these combinations in battle. If you're low on health for example, switch Paradigms to a combination with Medics to replenish HP.

This game is so complicated, im worried that im going to end up sticking with the basic controls/attacks because i wont understand how to do the other stuff and i wont be able to enjoy playing the game how it should.
Don't worry. You'll get used to it. It happens to everyone. You have to get used to each FF game's numerous idiosyncrasies. Once you become more familiar with things, then it becomes easier. You don't need to rush with things if you're still unsure with things. Take the time to familiarise with things first. Difficulty curves do get a little steep at times, although nothing unoptional in the game is that difficult at all.

One of the great things about the Final Fantasy games additionally, is that they entice you to do some thinking. It's rather rewarding when you familiarise with how a game works in terms of battle systems and character developments. It's also satisfying when you build up a team of powerful characters, knowing that you've put effort into raising them.

Hmm. What for me makes Final Fantasy so compelling? The soul-enriching, but ultimately soap-opera complicated storylines, the longevity - there's always something new to discover - the games just keep giving long-after you've finished the main story, the exploration, which FFXIII unfortunately ripped out, being blown over by the quality CGI cut-scenes, etc. Getting back to FFXIII though, as many have said, it doesn't do the series justice. I can understand why you've gotten bored of it - in terms of level-design it's essentially just a straight line and there's not much variety - just running down endless corridors, pressing X by floating orbs and getting spammed by enemies and the characters are pretty lacklustre too - the game is hermeneutically empty compared to previous games, like FFVII and X. My advice would be to start with one of those and throw FFXIII in the trash, where it belongs.

i like Final Fantasy because its an interesting game, fun and the storyline was awesome..i usually play FF7...

I LOVE Final Fantasy because the length, the story, characters and the environment forces you to get so invovled with the game. It sounds cheesy, but FF feels like it takes me to another world for the short time I'm playing it. I get so caught up in everything, the gameplay, the story. I think that each FF has something really cool to offer, and I love that they are all different enough to stand as quality games on their own.

For me, Final Fantasy taught me the important of friendship and honor. Also teaching me doing the right thing can bring you a long way.

an interesting topic...

I wanted to be a hero...

marry the beautiful princess and live happily ever after...

sadly it didn't happen that way...

So you read books where that happens and play video games where some semblance of that happens and of course I gravitated to FF.

Final Fantasy has always been a favorite of mine, simply because it is the core of any game of it's kind. I've always considered it as the cornerstone of RPGs, proving that video games can be emotional and thought-provoking.
For me, FF has become a part of gaming that similar RPGs just can't fulfill. I don't get excited about new installments for other games, but everytime a new FF hits the shelves, I fuckin do cartwheels all the way to GameStop.

FF has was for a time in the higher echelon of games that were available for the PS1 PS2
and the Playstation 3......Back when I first played the series just the name conjured up images of great quest and battles and intense and fulfilling story lines.

When I played my first FFgame (FFVIII) I was not disappointed and was immediately hooked and have been ever since, there is something about the mix of magic, weapons
Great characters and the summons that just make FF a compelling series for the fans.

At least it used to, It has been long since It was stated "Final Fantasy cannot rest on the past success of its Titles,S-E must continue to push its fans and give them high quality material; that will be received well into the future".

I just made that last part up........not bad huh?

You have gotten the wrong game. FFXIII is infamously one of the worst FF (even though I can't say that it's bad. It's still good. Just that it lacks some stuff).

Try playing the older ones. FFVII, VIII, IX and possibly X. But I think you will enjoy FFVII the most.

I like FF because:
30% - music
20% - storyline
10% - gameplay
10% - characters
10% - numerous sidequests and minigames (no 'real' sidequest/minigame is in FFXIII. Otherwise other FFs have lots of them, for example FFXII)
10% - imagination and magic - this series makes you daydream all the time. Like you wish that you live in this particular FF place because it's so nice and beautiful, etc... like I wish this character were real... etc
5% - humour
5% - graphics (because the graphics vary from pixellated (FFI) to beautiful hi-def realistic one (FFXIII))

Well actually, I feel that 75% of FF fans like FF because they are their childhood games. If you don't grow with this game, there's only a small chance that you will like it.
