Well first of all magic, I would gladly hear your favorite team as well.
Its a Tie for me.
Zidane, Vivi, Garnet, Steiner
Cloud, Barret, RedXIII

Most FF games have a few characters I liked but never an overall good selection. Except for one. Final Fantasy IV. I think every hero in this game was likeable on some level and played crucial roles in the story.
Of course, this was around the time where every character you played as had to do with the main story(FFI - FFV) because there wasn't an expanded roster to choose from(FFVI and beyond) or the game controlled which players you used. By doing this, the characters got more attention to detail and became more important. Since Final Fantasy VII, the game is really focused on just one hero when back in the day, it focused a lot more on the group of people you played as(FFV is a good example).
Every character you played as in IV had a well developed story that made you interested in it. One of the best things about IV was that character related quests or story was NOT OPTIONAL. You needed yo understand how and why these characters did what they did to grasp the complete meaning on why you're playing this game. IV wasn't like FF nowadays where you can either choose to ignore an additional character's development or quests. IV made all the characters a part of the story, which made the game more fun as well. All these reasons make every character seem important and with purpose instead of today's throw away characters you don't give two craps about(Cait Sith, Selphie, Quina, etc.)
So for an overall cast of greatness, I rest with IV.

Story-wise eh? well even though FFVI did have a great cast of characters, they were'nt really represented that much in the main storyline,and some were just tag-alongs....FFX/FFVII would have to do it for me, they both had a cast of characters who you knew everything about(especially their past) unlike FFVI.
FFVIII well I couldnt really relate to that game.....I blame Squall
with him being the main character you don't get much interaction with others,sure you may know their story even if it may be partially, you still don't have that much talk-time with Squall stawying away from everyone.
FFIV I just completed a few weeks ago for the first time.....And I didn't really care about any character except Kain (dunno why I cared for him
). The characters do though happen to go "missing "during your playthrough......and it is part of the story,so half the time the characters are there,the other half of the time they arent.
FFXII no gonna touch that I dont care about em.......and I'm sure you dont too.
FFXIII characters are for me loved with a passion and hated with a passion.......The loved would be Lightning,Sazh and Fang,and hated Snow,Vanille and Hope. Story-wise you do know a little about each character, but characters like Snow and Vanille just ruin it for everyone. Seriously,if this game had just Lightning,Sazh and Fang,dunno how the story would work out, but despite it being 3 characters it probably would've been the best cast.

The only FF game that i have played where I felt an attachment to any party was IX.
I love using Zidane, Steiner, Eiko and Vivi.

Second would probably be FFX. With Tidus, Yuna, Lulu and Auron/Rikku.
I can't pick between Auron and Rikku, Auron is really powerful but Rikku is really fast @.@

Can't we combine all the characters from all the Final Fantasies to make a super-team?
I think my favourite four would have to be:
Cloud Strife (FFVII) - he's going to be my muscle of course, and he's very pretty to look at too
Vivi (FFIX) - The cutest little black mage around, I also think he'd get on so well around Cloud. Like the big-bro relationship that he has with Zidane!
Rosa (FFIV) - My beautiful white mage healer, and she's an archer too! How cool is that, come on!
Fang (FFXIII) - Although I'm not a big FFXIII fan, I really wanted a dragoon in the party and I didn't want to pick 2 people from one game. Fang was essentially the only character I liked in the whole game and her Highwind attack is cool!
But if I had to pick from just one game I'd go for my favourite:

FFVII: Cloud, Yuffie, & Tifa
- I love having these three in the group because their Limit Breaks are just non-stop damage
FFVIII: Squall, Rinoa, & Irvine
- The same reason as the previous one. I usually prefer damage per second, and in this case, all of their Limit Breaks cause massive damage per second
FFIX: Zidane, Steiner, Dagger, & Vivi
- This nice main group (since the beginning) has always been my favorite because I feel like they share the most intimacy between each others friendship
FFX: Tidus, Rikku, & Wakka
- Tidus is quick (for the most part, unless you have 255 speed for everyone), Rikku has items, and Wakka has his ridiculous Attack Reels. With the three of these on the team, I feel like I can end any battle fast, and not to mention efficient.
FFXII: Vaan, Ashe, and Basch
- Ashe is the princess, so of course I have to pick her Basch is powerful and Vaan is a nice overall character. Ashe feels more like the 'main' character to me, and Basch just has ridiculous amounts of health. As for Vaan, I just feel that he is more preferred than the rest.
FFXIII: Fang, Vanille, & Hope
- With a powerful physical damage dealer, #1 healther, and strong black magic, this team is definitely my most preferred team. Taking down Adamantoises and other bosses that have millions of life is just a synch.
Overall: I think FFXIII's team is the best
I hope my reasoning for my choices are good enough. I might have a mistake or two in there, but it is because I haven't played most of the games in a while.
