In his newest Letter from the Producer, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn director Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida greets fans eagerly anticipating the beta phase scheduled to roll out in the middle of next month. For those of you participating, you’ll be glad to know that you’ll have many more character options than Hyur-Midlander-Male and Miqo’te-Keeper of the Sun-Female. The team is also preparing the official benchmark which will be released in the lead up to the official beta test, which will allow fans to observe how well the game runs on their computer. The team noted they are doing their best to include many more customization options to hair and color (just to name two) for the character creation system.

Yoshi-P, along with the rest of Team XIV, made their annual trip to Sensouji (a shrine) to start off the new year in good spirits ahead of the beta and eventual release of A Realm Reborn. Yoshi-P parted with a hefty note before praying and drew fortunes (omikuji). Here’s what they told the team:

“Much like treasure seen across the vale, the things you desire, no matter how close they seem, are not easily obtained. Do not let your heart falter. Patience is the key to reaching your goals. Stay focused and consistent in your work. When the time is right, the things you desire will be at hand. Remember that you are not alone in your endeavors. Like the phoenix taking flight, you will rise up and find success.”
Later, Yoshi-P was visited by two other notable figures in the MMORPG community: Jeff Skalski (Dark Age of Camelot, Warhammer Online, Ultima Online) and Bonnie “Mesanna” Armstrong (Ultima Online) from EA Mythic. The former of these two is quite the Final Fantasy fan, citing that Final Fantasy VI made him cry (joining me in the Final Fantasy Chicken-Wuss Club). He’s also played Final Fantasy XI, and managed to get into Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn’s alpha phase, leaving with high impressions. Ultima Online celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, and I send my congratulations to them as a fan of Ultima VIII.

I really wish them luck with A Realm Reborn. They are going to need it for this expansion to be a success.

Is it gonna be free to play after you buy the game(after the beta) or is this another Subscription one o.o? or is that even known yet?

I've been wanting to try it but I can't afford Sub fees :/

Uh...how about fixing all the glaring flaws with the game, guys? Instead of adding some crappy new customization options and making it run slightly faster, how about making it actually playable? Just a thought.

Oh, Square Enix. No matter how much you dress up a piece of shit, it's still going to be a piece of shit. Has the entire FFXIII debacle taught you nothing?

Are you serious? Have you been keeping up with ARR or are you still stuck in 2011? This is a remake of the original failed XIV.

I'd like to see an alternate reality in which the original Final Fantasy XIV actually went well and they didn't have to remake it. I have to wonder what other endeavors Square Enix would have achieved without spending so much time re-constructing FFXIV.
