Square Enix has updated the official FFXIII-2 site with yet another new video.

This time we take a look at the Historia Crux system, along with various field locations throughout the game including Bresha, Academia, and more.

That city is downright beautiful. I should really start replaying XIII soon in preparation for this. Notice the Behemoth materializing out of nowhere? It almost looked triggered by an alarm after being caught.

Looks great and makes me even more excited!
The game does look linear, but I feel as graphics advance we can't really have true "world maps" or anything like that anymore, so I'm fine with the linearity. Plus it's nowhere near as linear as XIII was, and shows that Square actually listened to the fans' complaints and addressed them :P.
I just hope that the song playing in the video isn't actually BGM...?
Nonetheless, the cities look awesome and I can't wait to explore em.

That's actually the new random battle system. Monsters materialize out of nowhere randomly. You can then choose to run away or 'touch' the monster to fight it. But you have to decide fast. The faster you initiate the battle, the more advantages you get, such as preemptive strike and haste. If you are late, you may get 'ambushed' and get slow status effect. NPC soldiers may sometime aid you in escaping by weakening the materialized enemies.

In that particular map, there are spotlights. If you stand within the spotlight, you won't encounter enemy. So it's a matter of stealth and luck in order to avoid enemy encounter.

That song is the BGM of New Bodhum, one of the first areas in the game. Be prepared for lots of vocal tracks in the game. I suggest that we do not deem this as bad right away. Let's try to accept changes in the series. Experience the new music first before deciding whether we like it or not.

The map has been designed to be not linear. You may perceive some of the maps above to be linear, but that's not always true because the map segments are hidden and only appear once the character approach it.

That sucks ass imo. I preferred FFXII's battlesystem. Monsters are already there on the map like real living creatures, not materializing randomly...sigh..

Poof a monster is there. We condoned it with older ff titles like text dialogues, but personally I have overgrown that and in this age of time its not acceptable for me.

Although Dragon Age had this battlesystem as well where enemies randomly materialise, I prefer to see the enemies beforehand.

Quite interesting. I guess I missed that about the battle engagement system. Sounds like a wonderful mix between seeing monsters on the field and the random battle system of older FF games.

I wonder, is there a chance to prep for a fight once they materialize?
