A new version of Final Fantasy VII containing a wealth of additional features could soon be available on Steam.

The users over at the GOG Forum spotted that Square Enix registered the domain FinalFantasyVIIPC.com on June 15th. Though the site has since been taken down, it can still be viewed in Google's cache.

According to the information gleaned before the site was culled, this new version will include 36 achievements, cloud saving functionality, and also online profiles so you can compare progress with your friends. The digital download was slated to cost £7.99/€9.99.

While the company hasn't spoken out to confirm the existence of the PC version, character designer Tetsuya Nomura recently suggested that new titles would "take precedence" over a remake of the much-loved classic. Desire for a remastering has remained high since a tech demo for the PlayStation 3 showed Cloud, Aerith and the bustling streets of Midgar in High Definition.

I think the main "feature" that they should be updating is the graphics. xD; Having achievements & being able to compare your progress is nice & all, but is it just going to feel like the same old PSX game at the end of the day?

As other FF fans have mentioned, it's a bit hypocritical for Square Enix to suggest that new titles should take precedence over remakes when they've remastered many of the older games prior to FFVII and even FFX (should be coming out this year for the Vita I think?), which arguably has good enough graphics and doesn't even require a remake. Plus, I think that they're planning on remaking FFIII AGAIN. -___-

So it seems as though their issue isn't with releasing remakes; it's releasing a remake of FFVII in particular. Most likely because they stated that they would probably want to change some tidbits of the storyline if they were ever to remake it (it was in an interview I read months ago, I don't remember the source).

^Agree. Achievements and comparing progress to peers is not "a wealth of additional features".

I could not agree with your 2nd point more, although if response is normal people will have a bone to pick with you about it.

Even though it isn't official, a group has spent time modding the living shit out of FFVII to have modern day graphics. It goes without saying that it's PC only. I imagine once this hits Steam, a lot of people will be doing just that.

There's this shit about "character booster" that may be present in this re-release? It basically sounds like a way to just cheat in the game and easily bump up your stats and Gil. Unless you really cannot defeat things like the Ruby Weapon at all no matter how hard you try without any cheats or just want to speed-run through this game blindingly quickly, why have this function? It makes beating the superbosses a bit pointless then in terms of an "achievement" if you can possibly cheat your way through them.

Ehh, not sure I would want to buy this at all, but I am eager to see what the modding community does with this. I invite them to mod the hell out of this game. Be as ambitious as you want! Mod the shit out of the Don Corneo part of the game!

Not holding my breath just yet. Not until i see new graphics. Not asking for super HD ps3 graphics. But just above kingdom hearts. Ff doesnt need amazing graphics, just satisfying graphics.

It was the story and gameplay that made us love ff. Sounds hypocritical i know. But you all know what i mean
