Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy Versus XIII remains in development.

A comment from Yoichi Wada has been provided in light of recent rumors that suggested work on the title had ceased, with various elements now being retooled for Final Fantasy XV.

On Twitter he laughed at rumors of Versus XIII’s cancelation, going on to say that today the team just finished their regular staff meeting on the game, which included a presentation on some of the game’s towns that he took part in.

“It seems someone is spreading a false rumor about Versus being canceled. Heh, just a few moments ago a regularly scheduled meeting for Versus ended. If you were to see the city etc. presented today, you’d wouldn’t be able to stand from surprise, lol.”

So there you have it. Straight from the top.

Well then,

Judging by this, Kotaku was just trolling everyone.

Good to know it's still in dev, although I'm not waiting another 6 years for it to be done.

Thank you for posting this, Ulty. I'm glad SE addressed the rumor, and I'm glad it's still in development and there is no truth to the rumor.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand, that's Kotaku's reputation down the toilet again, as expected. Kotaku and GamesMaster have unusual "sources". But they managed to get someone from Square-Enix (I wasn't expecting Wada to have done it though) to at least reassure the squealing fans out there that it kind of still exists, so kudos to their cunning plan there.

So hurray, this is to the possible appearance of Versus at a Japanese gaming convention where we may see the possibility of even more vague cutscene trailers and vague quotes - as well as more vague quotes that give us nothing from Nomura himself! Oh, I can hardly wait. Let me get my inhaler ready...

Well that means three things

1) Kotaku have really gone down the pan with rumours and speculation orientated news.
2) S-E can still redeem itself now with the fans with this title.
3) It is not been liquidised into FFXV and so means it could possibly feature at S-E anniversary party in August.

...going on to say that today the team just finished their regular staff meeting on the game, which included a presentation on some of the game’s towns that he took part in.

I'm most interested in that. We got some normal towns back by the looks of it folks :griin:

After years of miserable failure, I hardly think that one title would be enough to redeem Square Enix. Not to mention there is absolutely nothing to say that Versus will be anything other than crap; people don't know anywhere near enough to get as excited as they have been. Granted, you don't know enough to be cynical either, but...well, how many years has it been in development now? How much has been said about it? One would conclude that there isn't much to say, other than that it's pretty...

Mmm... So I sit and wait in peace. In the meantime, I shall play other JRPG games that DIDN'T take 6 years to develop :P

I'm really surprised this rumor caught on like it did. I totally turned my head the other way once I heard it. Cancelling Versus is stupidity beyond belief. Even with random sites reporting it like some kind of news story, I did not believe it and I'm glad I didn't. SE may have fucked up a few times in the past but I don't think they'd promise people a game for six years and then decide to cancel it. I really don't care how long it takes as long as the game comes out and has everything I was promised/looked forward to. ^_^

I am relieved, I am sorta lookig forward to world map & vehicles again. But why did it take a week to get some response?

well at least this sounds good. we will get to see versus.hopefully when it is re-revealed they drop the Xiii. overall it would be great if these werent confirmed on twitter

By all means, who are you kidding? SE makes more than just FFXIII. They published Nier, which while sold terrible, became a cult hit. Essentially all of their DS and PSP games were great (besides the story of The 3rd Birthday but thats also subjective), Star Ocean The Last Hope sold ok and mainly had good things said about it, FFXIII and FXIII-2, besides your undying hatred for it got mostly favorable reviews and sold well. The Last Remnant, from those I know who have played it, liked it alot once you had the option to install it as it reduced alot of the loading and stuttering. Infinite Undiscovery got a blah, but that's really about it. And their iOS games got some fairly decent praise (though I find them overrated but that's one's opinion against the many). Not to mention the Eidos side (which that studio has said they share the work and decision making).

So really, SE hasnt been this pile of garbage you like to make it seem, this gen. So as you say, what's keeping FFV13 from being garbage, we havent seen much. On the same token, what really has been shown or said about it to make it seem bad? Absolutely nothing. Talk like this is nothing but and it makes it seem like you dont want it to succeed no matter what.

Im gonna laugh though if they connect it directly to FFXIII, like when they are in the crystal state or something, they go to the world of Noctis. I mean Lightning technically plays a big role in the whole grand scheme of things, being the warrior goddess and all. Considering all the uproar FFXIII gets over a single strand of hair being out of place, I could only imagine the over exaggerated claims that would come from that.

To say the truth, anyone who even considered that a multimillion dollar game from one of the most important developers in the industry, with years into development, was actually canceled then I've got some oceanfront property in Arizona I would like to sell you.

A little piece of me came back alive when I first saw this. Like several others, I didn't ever completely believe the rumors, but after so long I had just enough doubt in SE to make me worried.

Will Versus XIII put SE back on top in everyone's eyes? Not singlehandedly, no. But everything we've seen of the game thus far has shaped it up to legitimately be the best FF we've seen in a long time. The more urban, sci-fi environment should please FF7 fans, the FF12-like battle system will please technical combat junkies, and though we don't know enough to make any early judgments about the story, it appears to also be a cut above the last few entries to the series.

Bear in mind I like FFXIII and its sequel, and don't really feel like SE has fallen from grace. So with all that coming from me, you know I'm saying this game is really something worth being excited about.

Now I just hope they hurry up and get it finished so that I can be proven correct :)

you know I read an artcle a coupe days ago that made me laugh called "things that happen sense Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced"

Things that happen...in video games...

The whole mass effect series
Assassin Creed Series
Call of Duty 3- Black Ops
Final Fantasy XII XIII XIII-2 XIV
Duke Nukum Forever...

there was more...just made me laugh.

Some of those are legit but Assassins Creed and Call of Duty are not. While I like the Assassins Creed series, the two most recent games were pumped out as fast as possible. Same with Call of Duty. Same paint job with a dive mechanic added in. Duke Nukum is just a disgrace period.

You lie like a Persian rug. Duke took almost 13 years of development. On that time table - Versus is WAY ahead of the curve.

No... Duke Nukum Came out AFTER Versus was ANNOUNCED... unless Duke Nukum still isn't out...but I think I seen it in stores...

I agree that it came out - BUT it's announcement was in 1997. I was just pointing out that while it did come out before Versus, It's development time puts Versus to shame.

I totally agree with you, and He is always negative towards S-E and Final Fantasy but that is for him to do so. I think along the lines of you, it could after all be their best title ever. We will have to wait and see after all game is an Art form now, don't rush it or it won't be the best it can be.
