Square Enix has offered a first glimpse at Final Fantasy XIV 2.0, now known as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, with a new trailer.

This trailer offers a glimpse at producer/director Naoki Yoshida’s vision for the game, teasing further announcements going forward. We’ll be seeing Yoshida and some of his team again at GamesCom in three weeks time, and shortly after that the PC version of the game will enter open Beta.

2.0 is a complete overhaul of XIV, and will then be what the company launches on PlayStation 3 in 2013. Check out the teaser below.

Final Fantasy XIV Summer Festival To Bring Yukata Costumes

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn producer, Naoki Yoshida, says in his Letter from the Producer column, that he has four keywords in mind for the game—rebirth, challenge, reform, and “Final Fantasy”. The release of A Realm Reborn is a little while away, though. Until it’s released, patch 1.23, which went live this week, will be tiding current Final Fantasy XIV players over.

Patch 1.23 adds six new sidequests to the game, three Grand Company quests, and a Skirmish, which is a a battle against a powerful foe on one of two instanced isles—Locke’s Lie and Turtleback Island. You can find the complete 1.23 patch notes on the game’s forum.

Additionally, there’s going to be an in-game summer festival that Yoshida says will bring yukata costumes, and provides a look at a few of these.

“As you can see, in keeping with Japanese fashion, the yukata are kinda…short,” Yoshida writes. “I must apologize in advance to those who prefer traditional full-length types. You see, some people on the team have certain…inclinations. /lol”

Looks great but im hoping to see some new gamepkay features. Wonder if this the new name is an expansion pack or will be the new name of ffxiv

I was hoping to see some gameplay in the trailer, but got some nice CGI instead. It seems Square Enix is really getting good at their CGI. Delicious, as usual...

Watching it made me realize how much I miss a good single-player Final Fantasy adventure. :'(

The guy looks rougher than the usual FF male. :hmmm:

Strange. :hmmm:

Anyway, it looks... nice, I guess. Didn't really catch my attention tbh.

Me likey.

He's also western looking. And it doesn't look like he was based off Gackt. Which kinda surprises me considering every FF main male character seems to look like that dude.

I have high hopes for this. I think that the new team just might pull off saving this installment. Let's keep our finger's crossed.

It looks nice...but its for the nice ORPG...so I wont every see this game since I can't stand ORPGs... (or the stupid monthly fees at least)

Well it definitely seems like an improvement over the mess that launched before. Maybe S-E are doing things right now and just listening to the fans and giving you a product you would actually pay for in terms of MMOs I mean. I think now they should make a free model capped upto a certain level to give people a taste of the new features etc before they can commit to the whole game.

Lets hope this is the step in the right direction S-E needs to take...now release date for FFVXIII.

wow I hated the voice over on that trailer. What a horrible unappealing voice :wacky:

Otherwise looks nice I guess. I will not play it haha

Haha I can see where you may say that but I think it's more the other way around. I love Gackts music and liked Genesis as a character, but Gackt lies alot about stuff. Like the whole Squall thing. Gackt said Nomura modeled him after him but Nomura came out and said that's false and he was actually modeled after River Phoenix.

I may try this out though. I've never played an MMO, and FFXIV sounded like an abomination when it first came out but they seem to be moving in the right direction with this. Might be too late sales wise though.

Did I see....Magitek Armor?! :fangirls

I hated the voice, but the trailer looked decent. However, it doesn't look very Final Fantasy to me. :hmm: I'll just have to wait for more updates.

I'm not going to post all the new gameplay screens in this thread, but here's a couple samples from Gamecom.

These are running on an i5 lapto at 70% optimization. These are also lower than standard settings according to Yoshi-P himself.

Wasn't sure if this deserved it's own news feed but I found it interesting so I figured I would put it in here

The original version of Final Fantasy XIV was… unpopular. The MMO debuted on PC back in 2010 toharsh criticism and low sales compared to the franchise as a whole, with less than a million copies sold worldwide.
So Square Enix has rebuilt the game from the ground up. Not just because it wants to have a successful MMO: It views any chance of a Final Fantasy XV resting with A Realm Reborn succeeding.
Producer Naoki Yoshida admitted in an interview that:
"In the 25-year history of the Final Fantasy series, there hasn't been a Final Fantasy that has failed. We can't – we just can't – let this game end in failure."
Yoshida was brought in two years ago as part of a change in teams that saw original producer Hiromichi Tanaka resign and most of the original team transferred to other titles. That happened in late 2010 and Yoshida and his team have been hard at work retooling the game ever since.
Yoshida essentially views A Realm Reborn not as an update to a game to make it more appealing, but the first step to Square Enix earning the trust of gamers and repairing the damage to a long running gaming brand. In other words, they've got a lot staked on salvaging an unpopular entry in this classic franchise. We'll get a better sense of if it paid off later this year: The beta is expected to open at some point between October and December.

Well I am beginning to be interested in this game, I might actually give it a go once I get my new desktop computer in like two months :D. I mean I love final fantasy and if it turns out looking all well and good then that will be brilliant. I just wish they have a free to play model like WoW with like up to lvl 20.

Not much was shown though.

And? I wasn't aware I said otherwise...

It doesn't change the fact that what WAS shown didn't look like it came from Final Fantasy to me. Which is, you know, why I said I'll have to wait to see more.

@HolyDragoon

Wow, less than standard settings and it still looks really good. I have to get a gaming PC soon; too many titles to miss out on. :(

im saying theres nothing final fantasy specific however it dosnt look like theres no final fantasy whatsoever. It may be just thethe spokesman. Plus final fantasy has no sspecific style unfortunately ff13 proved that.
