We have a treat for Siliconera readers this week with news about an unannounced Square Enix game. I can’t say anymore for the moment other than this will be an exclusive and the game will surprise you.
Read more stories about Square Enix on Siliconera.

Don't get your hopes too high. I wouldn't be surprised if it's another random online, handheld or smartphone game.

UPDATE:
This is the revealed game:

It's going be an online handheld smartphone game

But seriously you are probably correct... Another spinoff to FF or a DQ spinoff...either way not going be interested unless its something real for consoles... that will actually make me wanna play it for more than a week....

unless it final fantasy deminstions or final fantasy type 0 localization.... then i'm not intrested :hmph:

*braces self for either something really amazing, something really shit-tacular that I couldn't care less about or something that looks good but will take 9 years to develop*

Final Fantasy 13 vs!!

Please note that one-liner posts like this can be considered as spam. Please elaborate your point a little. Thanks.

It would be interesting if they actually provided some news on a possible VersusXIII release date. I mean, what happened to this game? Did they just forget about it?

I love these sort of articles. They encourage people to just fire out all sorts of random ideas that are often the implausible ones. Let's see, shall we?

We have a treat for Siliconera readers this week with news about an unannounced Square Enix game. I can’t say anymore for the moment other than this will be an exclusive and the game will surprise you.

So what do these two vague, teasing sentences tell us?

1) It is a "treat" for Siliconera readers. Siliconera's community largely gives not a single ounce of crap about mobile social games or something of the like. Unless they're just being flippantly sarcastic about it, it probably won't be something stupid like Chocobo Skateboarding for iOS and Android.

2) An "exclusive". What does this mean? It isn't referring to any platform exclusives, it's referring instead to a reveal exclusive to Siliconera. Square-Enix has never done any of this before, which is rather interesting, and I kind of think because of this, it probably isn't a huge project, because of course, they usually pop up in conventions and Japanese magazines first. I'd be amused if SE has randomly decided to publish something that Siliconera has been making on RPG Maker, or something.

3) It will "surprise you". So it will not be Type-0, Versus, Kingdom Hearts 3. None of those things (though Versus actually having a release date would be a surprise...). I'm surprised at how many people are actually suggesting them, considering Siliconera is making a big deal out of this being hard to guess.

So with the evidence above, I conclude that the game will probably be a collaboration between George Lucas and Square-Enix in a Super Smash Bros-type of game. Expect to see Tifa take on Jabba the Hutt, and Balthier and Han Solo trying to outwit each other. :mokken:

UPDATE:
Browsing the comments in the page, I have read that the news poster confirms it is not a localization announcement. In other words, it will be an entirely new game, most likely.

So no type-0 and such.

This is one of the many unannounced projects they have.... Pfff someone should make a list of all these games cauae have they really announced everything already they said they would announce? Its freeking confusing...

Okay, those of you who suggested any of the following: Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Final Fantasy Type-0, Final Fantasy Dimensions, Kingdom Hearts 3, a new Chrono game, The World Ends With You 2, etc., hang your heads in shame:

Nier's unfinished FPS/RPG Catacombs

Yes, the reveal was essentially a cancelled(?)/pigeonholed(?) game, due to the dissolution of Cavia. And yes, no one would have guessed this. There's a chance it could be completed if they feel like it, but otherwise, this is pretty much it. Not a single Final Fantasy in sight. I am still pissed off at the fact that they haven't taken on my Square-Enix and George Lucas crossover game idea, the bastards.

:rage: it could of at least been a decent game :hmph:

crawls back to his hole

This is why mastering the art of dialling down your expectations to zero is useful. And what are you talking about? This could have been a decent game, because the last time I checked, Cavia didn't exactly make horrible games...but yeeeeeah, a Japanese development studio making a FPS? That probably wouldn't have ended very well. Next you will be telling me that Square is outsourcing development of a CoD competitor to Tri-Ace.

FAIL!!!!!!
Congrats on another game that will be in my trash box...

:trollface:As expected

Let me just copy and paste Fleur's link here, for official purposes (and to further troll others :wacky:)

[30/04] Catacombs – The Game Cavia And Square Enix Were Working On After Nier

After completing Nier, Square Enix Japan signed on to produce a new intellectual property from Cavia under the code name Catacombs. A former AQ Interactive/cavia employee spoke to Siliconera about his/her title, which is set at the Museum of Natural History in New York.

Catacombs
begins with a crowd lining up to see an exhibit on a culture and religion that predates any recorded civilization. The player catches a glimpse of four people about to become heroes in event scenes before entering the museum. All eyes are on a mysterious object in the center which emits a flash of light. Monsters suddenly fall from the ceiling and the floor crumbles. Creatures mercilessly slaughter patrons and some security guards while Catacombs’ four heroes are consumed by a purple haze rendering them unconscious.

When the heroes awaken, they find themselves as some of the last survivors. Two security guards come to their rescue and try to fend monsters off as the group runs to an elevator. The heroes are saved, but the guards perish and one of the panicked heroes frantically presses the close door button. The elevator jumps from floor to floor until a cord snaps and the lift freefalls to the bottom of the museum. The four puzzled heroes emerge from the rubble and find themselves in a twisted labyrinth.Who are the four playable characters?

Matt
is a tech executive in his early 40s. He went to the museum with his son, but is more interested in flirting with tourists. Matt likes to think he’s the leader of the group, but he’s actually more like comic relief.

Carlos
came to the museum on a date with who he says is the hottest girl in Brooklyn. He works in a bodega, but originally came to New York from Florida to fulfill his dream of becoming an actor. As part of the group he makes sarcastic quips, but always puts his teammates first.

Gina
is a college student who went to the museum on a school trip. She’s confident and is actually the group’s leader. Although, Matt and Gina tend to argue about who is in charge. Gina is also the most in tune with the mysterious world and provides insight for the group.

Nguyen
is the youngest survivor being a high school student in his late teens. Nguyen’s family immigrated from Vietnam and he is trying to balance his identity between his family’s origin and his hip hop loving friends. Nguyen went to the museum with his brother and extended family who want to show him artifacts from his roots.

Catacombs
is a team shooter RPG with guns that level up and spells. Players start out with a basic pistol with infinite ammo, but you’ll want to grab one of the magic infused guns as quickly as possible. Cavia made a shotgun that looks like a demonic mantis. At level one, bullets fly out underneath its head. The shotgun grows arms at level eight (the maximum level) and its head becomes the barrel. Each level up increases the width of your blast. Other weapons include a machine gun that looks like a skeleton and a dragon-like magnum that grows wings plus gains explosive bullets. All weapons illuminate the area with a built in flashlight and the color of the beam depends on which character you’re playing as. The four heroes travel together even in single player mode where the computer controls the three remaining characters.

Magic rings dropped by enemies in the labyrinth let players cast spells. These have a set number of charges and won’t work when they run out. The Cure Ring restores HP. You can use this on yourself or a nearby teammate. A different ring powers up your gun and another ring casts Protect to reduce damage. Decoy creates a shadow clone of the player that draws enemy fire. If you level up this spell, the shadow clone will explode killing nearby enemies.

Unlike other shooters, Catacombs does not have fixed maps. Levels are randomly generated with narrow corridors and open rooms packed with enemies. The goal of each floor is to reach the elevator which the heroes hope will bring them to the surface so they can escape.

Square Enix planned to reveal Catacombs during E3 2011 as a retail PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game. The game, our source says, is far along in development and was playable, but Square Enix isn’t sure if they will complete the title. Like Nier,Catacombs has "twists" to it and we’ll be talking about what makes the game unique all this week. Hopefully, we’ll spark enough interest to get the game back on track.

Spencer’s note: It was never our intention to mislead with our news blip. If you felt we did, I sincerely apologize and instead of simply saying sorry I just made a donation to UNICEF to make amends. At the very least all of the outrage will bring some less fortunate people food and vaccines.

[01/05] A Pac-Man Multiplayer Mode In A Shooter? Cavia Made That For Catacombs

Being a squad style shooter, Catacombs was built with online play in mind. You can complete the game solo and there is a story to follow, but Cavia also created a bunch of multiplayer modes. The main online mode is co-op where a group of four players progress through the levels. If a player goes idle or drops out s/he is replaced by the computer. In the middle of a level run, players can vote to change the difficulty level (easy, normal or hard), restart a stage (to collect item drops) and kick other players. Catacombs also has a standard deathmatch mode and assault mode where you have to defend a room until time runs out.

Another multiplayer mode called Exterminator locks four players in a room with traps and friendly fire is turned on. You can shoot each other, but that isn’t the goal. You have to take out enemies spawning from generators around the room. Players earn points for each downed monster and a huge bonus for taking out Titan or Reaper class enemies. You respawn if you get shot down and the game ends when time runs out.
The most interesting mode is called Maze, which a Cavia developer says its inspired by Pac-Man. Four players are thrown into a maze with corridors so narrow its difficult to turn around. Ghoul enemies (melee monsters) appear and chase you. While you have your gun, you don’t have any ammunition. Touch a small dot and you can fire for three seconds. Eat a large dot and your weapon upgrades to its max level for five seconds. The goal of Maze mode is to eat eight pieces of fruit scattered in the maze. Fruit appears randomly, but unlike Catacombs’ usual levels there are ten or so different maze patterns. Other enemies like a Huitzilopochtli aren’t restricted by the walls and fly through the maze.

Going back to the core game, Catacombs has a couple of different environments to shoot through like Ancient Greece, an Aztec temple, and a stage based on Angkor Wat. Before you begin each level you have a chance to store a weapon in a safe box. Place it here and the weapon will be waiting for you even if you die or restart the game. Sort of like Demon’s Souls, Catacombs takes away all of your magical gear if you die, leaving you with a plain pistol.

Each area has unique trials players will face, but they won’t see everything since levels are randomly generated. In Greece you have to sneak through a pitch black room while sentries scan the area with searchlights. If a light spots you, you’re warped outside. One player can switch off the spotlights, but this usually require other players acting as a decoy.

In the Angkor Wat area players have to walk through rooms filled with tall blades of grass that block your field of vision. You have to defeat all of the monsters to leave and if you’re quiet you can take them out with magic or decoys. Noise aggravates monsters prompting them to attack players. The Aztec area has fire spitting statues that ignite oil slicks creating fire walls players have to navigate through. One option, the source says, is to have a really strong healer cast cure while everyone advances through the flames, but that player would need to have practiced using the spell for quite some time.

[02/05] Catacombs, Square Enix’s Squad Shooter, Had Mind Tricks Just Like Eternal Darkness

So, you’re walking through an Aztec-themed maze and decide to take a breather from shooting Tezcatlipoca when a giant foot crashes from the ceiling and scatters the team.

That’s one of the traps Cavia thought up forCatacombs, a project Square Enix signed after Nier was finished.

Levels in Catacombs are randomly generated and littered with traps and Cavia included a few mind tricks to catch players off guard. You might hear a woman shriek or a thunderous footsteps while you controller rumbles. These are decoys to distract players while enemies drop in from the ceiling through a portal. Other surprises designed to shock, but not harm players are hands emerging from a door when you try to open it an exploding the treasure chest that actually doesn’t cause damage.

Catacombs also had stage specific traps like Medusa statues in a Greco-themed level that turn players to stone if you shine your flashlight on them. Another area has giant Venus Fly Traps that drag players inside and warp them to another part of the map. An Egyptian level has a Pharaoh’s Curse that is activated if you shoot a certain type of statue. Cavia added this to make players pay attention where they’re shooting instead of holding the trigger to fire.

More common traps include spikes that protrude from the ground or walls and pitfalls. If a player gets caught in a pitfall, like a sand trap in the Egyptian area they will cling to the edge for a few seconds, but another player has to come over to save them. The most dangerous trap are monster generator generators. If you shoot one of these it will create a portal that spawns monsters.

What kind of monsters are in the game?

Catacombs has a mix of grunts called "ghouls" that use melee attacks. These guys swarm players with brawn over brains and use melee attacks (swords/spears/etc.). The developer joked that they were kind of like zergling. "Titans" like the stone statue on the right require players to work together to take down. You will need someone to draw fire or tank and another hero to heal while two other characters pelt the giant with magic bullets.

Uitzilopochtli or Huitzilopochtli are found in the Aztec level. These creatures spit fireballs and grab other players with their talons. They can lift allies up into the air and if you shoot a hostage they will take damage.

Reapers are one of the most menacing enemies. The first time you see an executioner it slowly comes towards you, something like a Tonberry the source explained. The next time you seen a Reaper it starts with the same pattern and then drops to the ground using all four "legs" to quickly crawl towards players. All of the enemies in Catacombs were designed like the Reaper with seemingly predictable attack patterns until they shock players wit a sudden change.

And what kind of weapons do you have to fight them? (Low level on the left, max level on the right)

"Shotgun"
"Magnum"
"Machinegun"

It looks really lame. The weapons look like they came off of an early 90s ripoff of Doom, and the graphics don't look good at all. But then again, the images presented look really blurry, so maybe its good. All the features/modes sound like things they just wanted to add just to add it, and that is not a good thing.

This gen is satured by FPS and now SE comes with one? This generation sucks.
Its our fault for not supporting other genres and is SE fault for being Lazy ass this Gen.
