[h=1]Tomb Raider’s storyline went M to match maturing gameplay[/h]Tomb Raider’s storyline is darker and more mature than previous games offered because Crystal Dynamics wants it to match the reboot’s evolved gameplay, global brand manager Karl Stewart has explained.

Speaking to IncGamers, Stewart said Crystal Dynamics approached the project from a gameplay-first perspective.
“We knew we wanted to change a few of the core pillars of the game around. Instead of full-on puzzles, we wanted to introduce this idea of Lara being smart and resourceful. Instead of simple ledge jumping we wanted it to be more about dynamically traversing the environment,” he said.

“As a result of that we thought that, if we can do all this stuff around the gameplay, should we not also bring a stronger narrative than we’ve had before? Something deeper. You hear a lot of people talk about it from many different games, but we really want to immerse players more than they have been before.”

Stewart said survival gaming just doesn’t work in a T-rated world.

“You can’t, for example, back off and cut away at the point when Lara goes through with her first ever kill – you’re just not going to achieve the emotional depth that we want,” he said.

“Without going into the M-rated space for the sake of it and dropping the F-bomb countless times, we wanted to use the mature space to really tell a human story; we want the goose-bump moments and the moments that will make you cry.”
Tomb Raider is due on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in early 2013.

I never played the original Lara Croft series and haven't yet played any of the games, but they do intrigue me. I enjoy puzzles. :lew:

Even though this is a little different, I am rather impressed by what I've seen so far! :) Lara's character seems well developed - strong, independent yet slightly vulnerable. I enjoy more character-oritented stories so a story which explores the origin of her character seems promising. It appeals to the English student and future teacher inside of me. :lew: I absolutely love the gritty setting. :gasp:

I fully support the move towards a darker and more mature storyline. They won't have to restrict the content, which could make Lara's transformation more realistic. The gamer should empathise with her more if her experiences will be more explicit and shocking. This will help to create emotional depth. Impicit events work well to a point, but there's something very disconcerting and heartbreaking about raw, brutal experiences. They could really incite the gamer's emotions.

If I receive any money for Christmas, I may just save up for it.

Definetely looking forward to this, thanks for posting this Ohri-Jin!

The title definetely needed something like this, it's been relying too heavily on the same material as previous (not they did terribly except for Angel of Darkness). But i'm really intrigues to see how Lara's beginning is revealed through this new installment.

Just makes me more pumped. The older Tomb Raider games can be fun, but they don't offer a detailed and emotional storyline that I always wanted them to have. She often felt like an image of an attractive woman that I was controlling through tombs just for lols and adventure. Now it means something. This is gunna be gewd. But seriously, I think people get away with tons of stuff at a T-rating. Look at Uncharted. It has blood (not a lot), gunfire EVERYWHERE, and the word 'shit' all around! But overall, they do have the potential to make it more realistic with an M rating.

The more I hear about it, even if it is only something small, the more I can't wait for the game. I was a fan of the older games simply because they could be fun, but I have strong hopes for this reboot. It will be amazing! I just can't wait to play as Lara again! t.t

Oh, it sounds promising! :inlove:

There will be defining moments, her first kill. I believe its a deer or something. She gotta eat. From just being an ordinary human to evolve into a human that does everything to survive is pretty hard to do imo. Do the transition too fast it will lose credibility. Takes too slow and you will be frustrated at the main char. It needs to be subtle. I will definitely focus on details when it comes to gameplay and script. If they deliver what they claim to deliver this game will be a great title and just what I need in gaming. Cant wait nonetheless.

Oh, I completely forgot about that trailer with the deer! And you're right, has to be subtle. I have seen attempts like this go to fast, not just in gaming, and have it ruin the feeling.

It makes me wonder how long this game will be though. I hope it isn't a short as Uncharted, though I guess I wouldn't mind if it is a great game. Would be amazing if it was 20+ hours. :ari:
