[07/03] Expansion for Final Fantasy XIV (Heavensward) has a release date: 23 June

At today's PAX East stream event dedicated to the upcoming expansion to Final Fantasy XIV, Heavensward, director Yoshi-P finally elected to reveal to everyone attending when players can visit Ishgard and the lands beyond. Initially vaguely teased to come out in the spring of this year, Yoshi-P stated that they had little choice but to push back the game to ensure for maximum polish. As a result, the expansion will hit stores on the 23rd June. Early access players can expect to dive into the content slightly earlier, on the 19th.

Pre-orders for Heavensward will be made available on the the 16th March, offering three editions of the game. Firstly, there is the standard edition, with price still unmentioned, though MMO aficionados will claim it will likely be in the region of $40. No word on a free month, either. The collectors' edition will come in a meaty package, offering a range of in-game and physical items, such as a dragon figurine. In-game items that come with the collectors' edition will include a dragon mount, a gryphon mount and Wind-up Cecil and Kain minions (characters from FFIV). Finally, there is the all-for-one purchase. People who have yet to touch FFXIV beyond the free trial can pick up both A Realm Reborn and Heavensward. Price for this latter package was also unmentioned.

In addition, Mac players can expect to jump into FFXIV round about the same time as Heavensward's release. This was made possible with help from a Canadian company.

New miscellaneous details from the stream include:

- The Alexander raid will come in two difficulty levels: story and hard. The latter is for the hardcore raiders who are familiar with Final Coil of Bahamut and its savage edition. The former will be for endgame players who simply want to experience the raid story without having to meet insanely high hurdles to jump through. In a previous event, Yoshi-P stated that the difficulty of story mode would be tantamount to tackling Binding Coil with Echo buffs.
- Given the complaints from Coil raiders regarding the unfair RNG drops for certain loot, the developers have refreshed the loot system in some manner. Details were not given.

- The Au Ra offer more potential for customisation. In the stream, it was stated that players can create either a cute, benign female Au Ra, or something akin to a succubus.

- They detailed the painstaking ways in which jobs are conceived and created. It is a multilayered process that usually takes an entire YEAR just to create a single job. Having to create 3 at once for the expansion has left developers wishing that they never have to do such a thing again!
- When deciding what the new tank role ought to be, it was narrowed down to a choice between Dark Knight and Samurai. Ultimately, Dark Knight prevailed. The team insists that they have not ruled out Samurai for a possible future inclusion, but for the time being, there are no plans to, and we should look forward to DRK.
- Before the Star Globe was conceived for Astrologians, early concept art has the new healer role wearing what looks like a Duel Disk from the Yu-Gi-Oh anime and manga series.

- The level cap for EVERY existing job will be increased from 50 to 60 (including the Disciple of the Hand and Land classes).
- Disciples of the Hand will gain a certain "specialist tier" system, details of which they are reluctant to indulge us on.
- The main story thread is to do with the ongoing millennium-long war between Ishgard and the dragon horde from the northern Dravanian territories. There will be seven evil Wyrmkings involved, and while questing across FFXIV's take on Skyrim, players can take to the skies and confront new Primals such as the giant sky whale Bismarck and the multi-limbed insectoid Ravana.

Specialist tier? I wonder if that means omnicrafters will become a way of the past. I'm doubtful of it, but just perhaps...

Regardless, it's good to have a date finally.

The flying mounts look fantastic and currently very smooth. I just hope that they have lag issues, etc, sorted out before release. If people are flying about in these areas all of the time then I wonder what that'll do for that sort of thing. Anyway, flying should be very fun. I wonder if people will start forming flying groups and do little dances in the sky (think of the Red Arrows, etc!).

Ishgard is looking okay (if Foundation and the other areas shown at the beginning are part of Ishgard), but I'm not so keen on the music that they have playing as they show it. It's what bothers me about the whole of the Coerthas region. I was hoping for something a little more upbeat in Ishgard itself, but it might grow on me.

I'm still not sold on the new race, but at least they run in an interesting way.

Link for screens of the new lvl 60 endgame gear for existing jobs. Some look inoffensive. Most look absolutely dreadful (*cough* SCH).

Clicky

Also, I'm not feeling any of the Coerthas/Ishgard/Dravania locations. It reminds me too much of say, Skyrim. I'm far more entranced by the weirdness of the floating landscapes.

The Bard and Black Mage costumes look pretty decent but I was quite disappointed with the Dragoon and Paladin outfits.

Rofl ^ that image, really?

I'm really not a fan of any of the outfits, bar the Ninja one. The rest looks pretty ridiculous to me... I also really don't care for the pricing. The game itself was 64 euros back when I purchased it on the Playstation 3. I switched to the PC version recently, which was another 35 (Collector's Edition) with a free month of game time. However, I think 30-40 bucks for an expansion is pretty bad...

I know people may disagree but it seems as though they're milking it already. EA much? 40 bucks for expansion is way too much, imo. Like I said, it does make me wonder if there's a free month alongside it.

I also wonder if it will be available through Steam right away, considering how many people have purchased it through Steam?

Whinge whinge, lol. :lew:

It is perfect that they delayed the expansion. I was planning to play in May or June so this is pretty much a godsend for me. The actual expansion looks nice. I am not very familiar with FF XIV as I only played the trial on ps4 for a paltry amount of hours, but these areas in the new trailer look nice. I easily found the flying part in the trailer to be the most exciting. FF has a nice going with this and Type-0 HD on the horizon.

I'm really excited for the expansion. The flying mounts look absolutely amazing, especially that dragon <3
I know the 1st new class I'm going for is the Astrologian. I am in love with that weapon.

If people who have barely even touched ARR are jumping in with the expansion, bear in mind that while you CAN visit Ishgard and beyond (providing you have a sufficiently levelled job to survive for more than 10 minutes against the lvl 51+ hordes), you will NOT be able to embark on any of the expansion storyline quests until you have completed the main storyline for A Realm Reborn and everything from patches 2.1 all the way to the upcoming Patch 2.55 (part 2 of Before the Fall) material.

Bit of a hefty price imo...I could care less about that dragon mount, but that Griffon mount damnzz I gots to have it!
Man I need to check which edition to buy pff. I cant wait for the expansion. Especially the 2 new primals and Alexander trial/raid.

High up in the clouds somewhere is another otherworldly Ancient Allagan/Tron construct, adorned with...wait, could they be...?

That should be easy if you and the others carry me, right? Even if you do not, I am convinced that I can level up rather quickly. I should not be underestimated because RPGs are my home turf, and even if I never played a proper MMORPG before, I should be good to go. Are you saying that the primals and such have to be defeated to enter the expansion? :hmmm:

I can have a specific schedule in mind, but other games may interfere with that.

In most fights we can probably carry you, yes. By then most of us (and your average PUG party) will likely be absurdly overgeared for nearly all of the storyline content.

You won't have to kill any of the Extreme version Primals, or the Hard Mode Primals of Ifrit, Titan and Garuda, but you will have to fight ones like King Mog, Leviathan, Ramuh, Shiva, etc. in their default difficulties. The latter group of Primals are 8-man content and should be relatively smooth to get through, especially if you approach each fight already semi-aware of basic mechanics before each fight.

Also, don't go into this game like it's a JRPG. This being an MMO, means you have to eschew a lot of basic principles you're already familiar with in JRPGs. In the harder content, you cannot simply hope to overlevel and overgear your way through them, because they depend on everyone knowing how to handle the mechanics and to survive. It takes considerable practice and tests of skill and your reaction to beat the endgame raids.

Yes, the griffin mount will be one of the in-game items that will come with the collector's edition.

If you are willing to spend $130 on what is basically unessential fluff on top of the game itself, then by all means. Frankly, this is a no-brainer for me. Would it be nice to have a dragon figure to put on my mantlepiece, along with an artbook, a Blu-Ray disc of CGI and some in-game vanity items? Indeed. Is it worth all that money? Nope.

EDIT: Misread! I thought you meant the PHYSICAL collector's edition. In that case, $60 is a lot more reasonable, but still a premium price to swallow, given sub fees on top of that.

Oh, in case any PS3 PAL players here haven't caught word yet, Heavensward will ONLY be available as a digital download for us. No physical release.

You have GOT to be kidding me... 60 FRIGGIN' DOLLARS for DLC?! Have the gone and lost their friggin' minds? That's absolutely mental. They're even worse than EA with their Sims expansion packs right now.

So you're basically paying 20 dollars extra for that dumb griffon mount? No offense it's not a bad mount but that price is NOT WORTH IT. That's absolutely CRAZY. o_O I'm a bit baffled to be honest.

The 40 dollar one is even expensive as hell, let alone 60. The damn game (CEdition) wasn't even that expensive on the PC. Fuck. that.

They're really ripping people off.

$130 for the physical collector's edition in the United States.

£130 for the physical collector's edition in the United Kingdom.

$40 for the physical copy of the game on PS4 in the United States.

£40 for the physical copy of the game on PS4 in the United Kingdom.

And they will still laugh all the way to the bank.

SE logic dictates that all English speaking countries are the same. There is no room for currency conversion, as that space has been occupied by used panty vending machines and tentacle porn.
