Human civilization should probably direct more of its surplus production to survival. I mean, this is just one asteroid, the french vanilla of threats to our existence. Compared to the money spent on things that aren't self-preservation, our ability to save ourselves from disasters is pretty pathetic. Should work on that.

That won't happen if Bush is in office.
See Hurricane Katrina.

i know good thing hes out next year , im celebratin already lol. i think the title that the asteriod is going to destroy the earth is an incorrect title tho. a region or city doesnt exactly count as the whole earth lol i dont think itll even happen, how r we gonna predict 20 years into the future wen we cant even properly predict the weather for next week?seriosly lol

Because celestial mechanics is a different discipline than meteorology. Meteorology is an attempt to reduce a system of mind-boggling complexity - every atom and every force on Earth - into the black-and-white absolute "is it going to rain tomorrow?" Individually we know how these concepts work, wind and humidity and so forth. On a planetary scale, the computers simply can't crunch numbers fast enough, nor are we entirely confident of our fundamental equations. Hence the study of weather on Mars and Venus and such, to try to illuminate the most fundamental forces and uncover the most fundamental constants that drive weather on our own planet. The history of planetary science has been a list of contributions to the accuracy of weather prediction on Earth.

As for the mechanics of orbiting objects, that's alot more exact a prediction. I recommend you study both meteorology and astrophysics. We know, for example, the positions of all the planets a million years from now. A billion years from now. After the sun dies things get tricky, but we can still offer an approximate value. It's a much more exact field than weather-prediction.

Hm i dont know what to think about this,if it will be happen i just hope it will be quick, but something tells me that everythink will be just fine.I dont know why there where many before and never hit us,so ithink they will find a way to do somethink about it.But i must tell you i dont realy believe it.

Tell that to the one that made the dinosaurs extinct. Too bad that asteroid isn't flying around anymore. I would've wanted to kick his ass for killing the Dinosaurs.

Anyway yeah, by some Mayan Calendar the World will end at the 2012, but actually they do not mean destruction. It's more like, well, a new world, new start, etc. Path to enlightment, etc.

Maybe the Mayans are right. If they are, you won't have to worry about an asteroid in 2036, will you?<!-- google_ad_section_end --><!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

thanks, the only thing that did for me was another round to the therapist, ahahaha

There will be alot of advancements in technology, etc by 2036. Compare now to 29 years ago... we have come a long way. Now that we are aware of alot of things, we can advance alot faster, and maybe that asteroid will no longer pose a serious threat as it can be dealt with... well just hope so

I'll be 66 in 2036 and I really don't think it's gonna bother me. It wouldn't actually bother me if it happened right now. I am what's called a fatalist. If it's going to happen it'll happen and there is nothing we can do about it. If mankind, like the dinosaurs is destined to be wiped out in an asteroid hit and become fossil fuel for the next dominant species then so be it. I get the feeling it'd be a good thing in many ways. Besides, it probably wont happen. Jupiter is the Earth's 'shield' so to speak, it's huge gravity attracts just about everything that gets into range, like the Schumaker-Levy 9 comet that came close. Besides, I don't think a 1 in 45,000 chance is gonna scare me that much. I can't even win the lottery.

A 1 in 45,000 chance is the same as a 1 in 1,000,000 chance- it's not going to happen. Ever.

And even if it did, somehow, we wouldn't have too much trouble stopping it...

i believe that humans will distroy themselves befor the comet hits. anyway there is no point in worrying about it. if it happens it happens.
anyway most of us will be strugleing to survive becasue of Global warming (which is total b*******) Anyway.
Why complain...

Maybe we'll have some progress on Mars by then, so we can shuttle everyone over there before the meteor hits. The suicide cults will probably stay though, drinking kool-aid and watching the stars.
