Avatars

I get the same error message. I can't upload an avatar as well. :/ *is sad*

Are you guys certain you are attempting to upload a file that has the proper extension name? Some may be forbidden here. Ex: .jpg, .png, .gif, etc...

Not saying those are forbidden, I'm just listing examples of suffixes. I'm not a big computer person so I don't know how to properly name them.

Warning: fopen(./avatars/avatar3492_73.gif) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /includes/class_dm_userpic.php on line 275 :monster:

Busta, the error looks more like a permission issue. It could be usergroup or incorrect chmod setting, since the avatar needs to be saved into a specific directory.

thats wierd, i just changed my avatar earlier today with no problems. i wonder how come some people can do it and others can't?

it all depends on the file you are trying to use for an avatar. Derek sent me one he wishes to use and I tried to set it from the link of the image he sent me, and even in the Mod CP, I couldn't do it; I got the error message as well.

Belazor to the rescue?

What the hell? I get this message while trying to upload an ava.

Remote file is too large

yet here's the ava I want to upload.

Now I don't have access to the file causing the error atm, but it would seem as if the /avatars/ directory is having its CHMOD settings randomly changed. Why this happens, I have no idea.
But that error is almost definetely a derivative of avatars being stored in the file system and vBulletin not having write permissions to the /avatars/ folder.

The only possible fix at this point in time would be to move avatar storage to the Database, however this creates additional load on the server due to lack of caching abilities, as well as the fact that DB obviously desires the avatars stored in the file system.

*sighs* I know complaining won't help but still.... The avatar issue has been going on since the hack. It's been almost three weeks that I and a few other members aren't able to change our avatars. :/

Then just host it on someplace like Imageshack and use the URL instead of uploading them to the forums. That's what I did.

I tried that as well and it still didn't work. Also, this hasn't been happening to me since the hack because I changed my avatar as soon as my name got changed after the hack. Only like a week ago when I attempted to change my avatar back to a previous one I had on this forum that I notice the problem.

Riku that won't work - Derek sent me both the file of the image he wanted to use and the link - i tried changing his avatar by using both methods in the MCP and i still got the weird message =/

it might be a usergroup / post count thing - some full members can change it some can't and senior/vet members seem to have no problem at all =/

Ummm...okay.... I've tired that several times already. It doesn't matter where the image is linked from or how you upload it. The server that needs to upload that image.

I demand to be changed to a veteran member just so I can change my avatar.

I also PMed Busta asking that if he changed me to a nub, if the system would change me back in some amount of time, but he logged off before he answered me. :\

What are you guys talking about? The avatars have been fixed for like a couple of days ago now. If not, then what's the error message that you're getting?
