I think they would have met when Balthier ran away or in a bar or something, its rather vague and obscure about it in the game.

It is rather annoying to see them just pop out of nowhere and no backstory to how they have become such good companions. Maybe Fran ran into him while she was running away from her village? Maybe He's the reason she left in the first place? Urgh...so many thoughts.
i think they met while balthy was doing one of his pirate deeds and fran was like fighting somewhere too or something
or maybe they just met at some club or something, you know maybe balthy was celebrating his bday at some party or something and fran happened to know one of the guests and thus was introduced to him

I think they met when fran left the forrest...i know if i left my village alone if i found someone alone i would stick with em...then again it could be anything we may never find out
this is why FFXII is the least appealing to me, the characters hardly have any backstory. i wish i knew how they met, well actaully there are a lot of things i wish i knew about pretty much all of the characters but i won't get too far off topic...

Anywho, I think they might've met in a Pube of somesort. Balthier was drunk and got himself in trouble and Fran saved him? *shrugs*

Well the whole "50 years" that they keep mentioning in the game refers to the time period ago in which Fran left the Eruyt Village. She left because on the outside they could see that the rest of society was just the Hume nations warring with each other and tearing themselves apart. She leaves to try to change that, and when she leaves, her sister Jote declares that Fran is no longer a Viera of the Wood.
The only hint in the game about Fran and Balthier meeting up that I can recall is when Balthier or Fran states that they met up "6 years ago". As we all know they eventually turned into Sky Pirates together, so from there on out, all we can really do is speculate.

I didn't even know they met 6 years ago. =/. That's quite a surprise for me. I wish they had told more of how exactly they met. Fran seems not to trust easily and neither does Balthier.

This is exactly what I dislike about Final Fantasy XII. Lack of story. Interesting characters but with no proper backgrounds given which leads to so many loose ends. They really should've put more effort into this.
I personally think that they put so much effort into the gameplay that they didn't do much for the story. You had to read the Beastiary in order to get the background stories.

Yeah it would have been nice to get a background story. But I don't think it effects the quality of the game. Fran and Balthier work good together thats all that really matters as far as FFXII. We know Fran left her village and Balthier was a sky pirate. Both were outcasts of sorts searching for a new way of life. They met, they got along, the end. Everyone keeps knocking the whole FFXII story but to me not knowing leaves it more open for a sequel or prequel game.

I never said I didn't like it. I loved the game. I just wish there was way more detail about it.

I think you misunderstood me. I didn't hate it, I thought it was one of the best titles in the series. However, I also think it could've become so much more had it not lacked a very important element.
Sadly enough, sequels hardly ever turn out as good as the originals ... Just look at Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus, Final Fantasy VII Advent Children ... With them in mind, my hopes for Revenant Wings and Crisis Core aren't that high up.

Sorry I get so defensive but you gotta admit it there are alot of ff fans that dislike this game.
my hopes for Revenant Wings and Crisis Core aren't that high up.
I'm usually more of an optimist, honestly.
I'm looking forward to both actually. Crisis Core more so than Revenant Wings. But I was thinking about picking up RW just to check out the story.
On a completly different note...I wonder what Fran/Balthiers kids would look like??
