Best Final Fantasy to buy?

A follow-up version? Um no. VIII is a completely new storyline with new characters. Same with IX, X, and so forth.
Hmm, but a game you'd like to buy, eh? Try VI, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XII and...you know what, heck, just try them all!
I don't really know your preference, but since I played all of those that I mentioned (and enjoyed it a lot) I suggest you try one of them. As far as which one first...hmm, I don't know...just pick one. (Superman superman, fly away!)

Final Fantasy VIII.
It is the best Final Fantasy game i have ever played. the characters are so realistic, and the game itself is also futuristic.

For the love of God get FFVI and FFIX.
I'm really glad you enjoyed VII Red, and IMO the best of the series.
I would go for VIII next too but remember you can get Advent Children or Dirge of Cerberus if you want to see what happens after FFVII.
FF Origins and FF Anthology are also available in the UK for PS1. I strongly reccomend them, if you can handle the outdated graphics. The stories are amazing.
Also IX is my second fav after VII, so check that out too.
Oh bugger, just get the lot and don't make any social plans for the next couple of years.

I'd have to say that for sheer enjoyment I'd recommend Final Fantasy IX. It's not the most difficult, it's certainly not original but it's an excellent game to play through.

I'm agreeing with Sun and Steel here. Even though you've played FFVII as your first already, my intro to the series was FFIX and it got me hooked big time. It's a great game to get a lot of the basic concepts down, but it's also got a great set of characters, and a story that will capture your attention; especially late in the game.
Gotta agree with Mitsuki though; play them all.
I would go with Final Fantasy X. Final Fantasy VIII is some people's favorite game but it's really a gamble. It's enough to either make you a huge fan or make you hate the series if you play it this early. Final Fantasy X is a much safer bet. You'll get into it and you also get the treat of nicer graphics, which is only superficial... but who says that doesn't hurt.
All depends on what sorta plot you're looking for really.

i gotta go with number 9,its one of my favourites
however if you like your characters,a bit more moody,or serious gameplay..then get 8...i only got to disc 4 of this one
