I'm currently replaying FF-10, because I love it, and I suddenly realized that it looks amazing on my tv. It had never hit me before, but I think it looks the best out of the series. FF-12 seemed all blocking to me, and the characters didn't look as good, not to mention Vaan's chest.

Anyway, what do you think, is this the best looking FF game yet. Of course, I hope that 13, or whatever number it is now, looks alot better, but I mean between 10 and 12.

I obviously thought that 10 looked better.

I also think that X had the best graphics. The only problem I had with X was that everything was a little too shiny. With number XII everything seemed a little to pasetlly... But I like the way they did the faces, (in X) with the little sunspots on their faces and all. The problem I have with XIII is that everyone seems to be too perfect... their faces are so smooth, it's ridiculous. The hair, and the eyes, thats the best part <3

I love how FF8 looks. The graphics IMO are still awesome to this day and back in 1999, they were considered awesome graphics. FFX does look pretty and shiny afew years on. 12 reminds me of Vagrant Story with its graphics. Probably cause the same designer worked on both games lol.

Out of the entire series I'd say it wasn't, FFXIII aside, FFXII was definitely the best visual looking game, especially when it came to environments and detail. FFX just seemed to be more colourful and stuff >.> In terms of graphics at that period of time, I would then say FFX did because it was the first FF title release for the PS2 so they didn't have the resources to make it look as good as FFXII.

I beg to differ!

Final Fantasy X, to me, did not have the same wonderful graphics as Final Fantasy XII. I am sorry but half of the character models in FFX are horribly bland and the main characters all look Caucasian in game wise unlike in the FMVs when they magically looked Asian again.

FFX in-game character models don't even have correct lip-syncing the American version and they can't move their fingers individually which is my major pet peeve since their hands look like weird cups in some scenes.

Art style wise, I am sure everyone prefers FFX to FFXII(everyone but me) but I honestly do not view this game graphics in such high regards.

I have to agree with Ryan here. XII had revolutionary graphics as far as the series go. It seemed to have been worked on feverishly. X had great graphics, but sometimes, the cel-shaded attributes came out too much, whereas XII was done almost perfectly. But then again, X did come first and could have been as great as XII's had it come out later.

Personally I thought that FFX looked the best GFX wise in the FMV's.

The GFX were so appealing and the environments such as Macalania were simply stunning. =0

In my honest opinion I think that FFXII's GFX looked funny.

They had really harsh and weird looking facial features. They didn't look quite finished at all. =/

The environments were okay but the characters I wasn't a real fan of.

Personally I think that XII had the best graphics on the whole. I found the FMV's and the general environment to be stunning even compared to some of the Next Gen games I had played. The one thing which bummed me a bit about XII's graphics was the characters. I disliked the weird shiny parts that appeared on the characters faces and I think FFX's graphics beats FFXII's in that respect. But other than that I think FFXII wins over graphics.

I think FF10 and FF12 both have flawed graphics.
FF10's FMVs are good. It's actually just mediocre, but FF12's FMVs have the characters all having really pale complexions. Basch, Ashe, Vaan, just practically everyone looks pale it's almost comical.
I haven't seen FF13's graphics on my own TV and such, so I won't comment on that.

I bite

FF8!!! Best of the series imo

but with the choices I didn't like either really. FF10 it seemed everything was in solid colors. The shades in the game were even a little blunt. There was a big difference rather it was shiny or shady. Shady = too shady, bright = solid colors.

In FF12 everything was BLONDE. The same with shades. When it was shady it wasn't as bad they performed it pretty well but when it was bright it had a yellow/gold shine like the sun.

Both games were well done but neither impressed me as much as FF8.

I agree here.

I think that X was of course the better game of the two, and maybe you just saw the graphics as better because of the other parts of the game. I know I get like that sometimes, I just fell in love with X and thought the graphics were amazing. But I've got to admit that XII did have the better graphics, when I started playing it again I noticed it. It probably is most likely because Square had just begun producing on the PS2 and wasn't quite that familiar with it. With XII they had more experience.

I think FFX has better graphics. FFXII just kinda... you know everyone looked like...their face was coloured with pastels. Anyone notice that? FFX looked great because I've noticed with Square's early games on the PS2 (The Bouncer, FFX) they seem to have bene experimenting a lot and try to put as much effort as possible and put the PS2 to its limits.

As much as I love FFX, I can't say it has the best graphics of the series. The FMVs were amazing, but the graphics ingame were a bit choppy and sometimes the way characters moved were strange. FFX is great game, but to be honest, I think FFXII had the better graphics.

it's all a matter of taste once the discussion moves into art style. when doing a comparison of graphics it's important to keep the focus on textures, grain, particle effects, and other technical details. Sure FFX's 'firaga' might look better to some people style-wise, but does it utilize as much particles and flash as XII's Ardor spell? Are the ground textures crisp or do they tend to blur and look painted on? And if so, how severe?

I'm not an expert and I don't hold any pretensions to know a lot about the subject, but those are a few examples of what needs to be compared if we want to take this seriously. Graphics are serious business. :)

EDIT: Also, the basis for comparison needs to be defined - are we comparing the two based on realism or something else? (I would guess realism, but just to make sure).

I liked XII's graphics a tad more because in X, uh, why did my characters faces and upclose facial movements look a bit skew wiff? XII didn't have this problem, characters facial movements seemed to be a lot more "normal", without the whole shinyness that X had.

I agree. I haven't played FF12 so I can't give a great opinion. But I do really like the graphics on FF10. They did a great job. In regards to the lips not matching to the words comment, I just relate that to the fact that it was made in Japan. And does that really have anything to do with the quality of the graphics?

Easy answer. XI.

Best game graphics in my opinion. The fact that you can still see half way down an area even though you're in a fight is pretty cool. (As opposed to basically getting a new background that is the same every fight until you move to a new area.)

X and XI did character faces and expressions better.

XI and XII did world and background insanely better. Hell, I can't even think off the top of my head any FF that actually had rain before XI, unless is was one of the first six... And please, that's not even close to looking like rain.

And then of course, I can be really unfair and say, how many FF's had a day/night cycle where background and world graphics changed depending on what time it was, besides XI?

PS: And yes, I know XI has only one FMV... That I know of, I didn't get as far as I wanted in the game.

Edit: Figured I should probably focus more on FFX...
I like the character art and faces. They look a tad bit cartoony to me, but they aren't a very crappy shade transition like XII. Vaan versus Yuna is a great example. You can tell where the shadow is on Yuna's face, but only in super-bright day time or building lights parts of the game. Vaan... Jeez, it's like there's a spotlight behind him no matter what, making his nose, eyes, and partly mouth dark as possible, but his cheeks and forehead almost pure white. Whiter than a human, that's for sure.

And magic spells graphics? Hell, I barely notice them anymore. Way to go Tmoo, you have forced me to actually pay attention next time I play in order to make a comparision to any other FF game.

Well it can really only be between X and XII because they were released on the most powerful platform a FF has been released on so far (outside Japan). I like IX's look the most though.

I aim to please~

both games have their share of graphical bumps but it never phased me too much, bar vaan's abs (if penelo had taken an eraser and wiped off those pencil drawings, she'd be my favorite FFXII character). hearing you talk about XI makes me want to play it, but then i'd be returning to the old MMO-addict in me...

i also never used to pay attention to spell graphics, that changed after seeing scathe in action (and to some extent, after playing ZOE2).

Even after playing FFXII, I still think FFX had the best graphics in the game. The cinemas and FMV's were amazing and I am still in awe as I play them today.

It was the first game where I realize it had movie quality graphics on the cut-scenes. Sure FFXII had great graphics, but they were expected at that point. For FFX it was a HUGE leap from FFIX's even though that game had some killer FMV's as well!
