which game do you lot think has the best story, for me it's a tough one, I can't decide between VI, VII and X...so I'll say all three.

Oh c'mon! Truly is must be VII! The story is simple yet amazing in every aspect and tells a compelling story that could be taken as an example of modern life! Powerful tycoons who cause harm to the planet just so they could profit from the rewards, men hellbent on the degradation of all human kind and of course that even the most special of people can have mental breakdowns no matter how strong they are.

Final Fantasy VII is such a story, it's amazing.

Well, I obviously think that VII, VIII, IX, X and XII have the best storylines. I know it's a lot, but I can't decide which ones are my favourites.

VII has a very deep story and has so many different elements to it. You couldn't just depict it as fantasy, there's also romance and tragedy in it.

VIII is mainly romance, although there are trials between Squall and Rinoa to overcome before finally getting together.

Now where to begin with IX? It takes the goodness out of the old games and inputs them into a completely different gaming experience.

X ... so tragic. Was shocked to learn that
Tidus was a dream
and that
Yuna would have to sacrifice herself to defeat Sin
.

Then you got XII. For once, I was somewhat happy to see that romance wasn't a key thing here. But I can't say much on this one really because I haven't finished it yet.

So there you are. VII, VIII, IX, X and XII does it for me. All have good storylines no matter what you say ...

I also think it's between VII VIII & X. I just like the stories for all different reasons.

I like the sci-fi elements in VII & VIII trains, bikes outer space ....all that jazz.

The love stories in all 3 :wacky: I love a bit of romance

They were all just epic really

I'm a FFVII fanboy through and through. It was the first one I played, and the one that got me hooked. I found it to be the most gripping, and deep in terms of story.

I don't know if I'd feel the same if FFX was the first FF game I played though.

I would say that IX had the best story overall, the way the story unfolded until the middle of disk 3 was a very enjoyable, well-paced story that had plenty to it. X and VI's was up there as well although a few elements were a bit tedious or needed more to it.

VII seemed to generally be all over the place and things just seemed to randomly happen but not in a good surprised sort of way, the core of it was good but just never got to the level of IX. VIII's beyond the Squall/Rinoa love story was very lightweight, just seemed more like plot filler than anything. Saying that that was possibly the point of it in the first place but it does have for me weakest out of all the stories.

XII I haven't completed although it could give VIII a run for its money in the dullness factor.

did XII even have a story, in fact did the characters ever meet? i mean i can't remember a single interaction between Vaan and Ashe.

I'd definitely say IX. VII is the game that has the most backstory etc. but I feel that the IX story was just amazing. It was a much more emotional storyline IMO. There were bits that just make you feel sad (eg. Burmecia and Cleyra) and the whole thing was quite tragic (in a good way). There were also some quite deep/meaningful characters like Garnet, Freya, Steiner, Vivi (heck pretty much all of them).

In contrast, for me, VII wasn't as meaningful. It seems like just an adventure. It too had some great characters, but they didn't have that sort of connection. Anyway it's hard to explain.

Using films as an analogy, I would say IX was the kind of low-budget, really well thought out + scripted film that is in the running for an Oscar, whereas VII seems the blockbuster, good but never great.

As for others, don't get me started on XII. Absolutely hated the characters, although the whole Archadia-Rozarria-Dalmasca storyline had SO much wasted potential IMO.

So yeah, IX really does it for me.

Uh, didn't realise this was a bash the FFXII thread (again..), as I thought we had just had to vote for which one we thought had the best storyline/s?

VI has a really good storyline - even though afterwards in WoR a lot of things were sidequest based, you could find out so much about everyone, it was awesome.

VIII's was awesome, if you got rid of the cheap love story which bugged me.

Loved XII's too, I thought it was epic - it didn't need to have a love story to carry it through, and I thought the characters did interact pretty well.

VII- is overrated and is too complex, that being said i like it but, it feels like they had too many different stories trying to be interwoven.

I don't hate FFXII story, but i didn't like it, so I won't elaborate, incase a certain someone verbally assualts me:wacky:

I think VIII had the best, you have seeds, laguna, ellone, romance and interesting sidequests. It's a good game(imo) and it has a shitty villain, which makes the quality of the story line more important, and it succeeds. It also doesn't feel it needs to end in tragedy a la X.
Imo it's better than VI because kefka is better than ultamecia

i find this a difficult decision because i love many FF games and their storylines so im gunna try and sum them up.

VII:cloud the Ex soldier searches the world for sephiroth to kill him and save the world.

X: you travel the world as Tidus joining the lady summoner to try and save the world from the evil monster Sin.

okay so it isn't many but its still more than one so i will have to say that i am torn between VII and X for which has the best storyline.

Aww, Rulia doesn't like the FF12 bashing. I guess I could hold off on that one. ;)

I'd say that FFX has the best storyline. It has suspense, surprise, ungodly twists, tragedy, romance, comedy, cute moments, all of that stuff. I wouldn't want to spoil what happens for those who haven't played, but the epic character development with all characters allows the player to connect with all of them on some level, and feel how they feel as the game's events transpire.

I rate storyline's based on the "OMFG factor," which is all the awesome surprise elements throughout the story. I don't want to seem ignorant since I've only played I-II, VII-XII. Sorry III-VI. :neomon: I'm also leaving out any plot details since not everyone has played the games.

VII - Although it is considered by many to be a very overrated game, it is overrated for a reason and thats because it was THAT good. Most people judge VII, from hindsight (Post PS1 perspective). I am one of those people of course and judged it accordingly. However, for the people that played it around the 98'-00' area, it was a game "above it's time." The story (although clouded at times) was epic and several OMFG factors made it a classic.

VIII- In my personal opinion, is my favorite just because it brought me into the Final Fantasy franchise. The story was clearer than it's predecessor, but also had a few clouded moments where you had to judge the situation for yourself. The romance, although nice for some, was not necessary or developed well. The OMFG factors were there, you just had to look.

X - X has always had the clearest, easiest to follow storyline out of all the games for me. The OMFG factors in this story were some of the best of them all. (X-2 just kinda ruined it for me.)

Tie between IX and X for me.
Both had a great number of twists and turns but were still clear enough to enjoy them. Too many stories are ruined by the weight of their own subtext and less enjoyable because of it.

Though I feel a lot of X's meaning was lost in the end and the wrong people were villified. In X, there were almost no real villains in the traditional sense of the word. oh, there were antagonists, but they weren't the "argh! Kill everything just because I'm evil!" kinda villain.

Actually, same is true for IX.

Final... Fantasy... TACTICS!!!! This masterpiece didn't so much have a great storyline as a great universe! Talk about depth, you could teach history courses on this world with all the information given to you. The romance of playing the righteous noble casting aside societal expectations to do what he knows is right was masterful! The flexibility of the interpretation on certain characters' true feelings, the constant swinging of the pendelum of loving Delita and wanting him to die a slow, agonizing death. These are the ingredients that make Tactics the indesputable winner of the Best Storyline award! TACTICS FOREVER!!!

...

IX comes in second. Zidane's journey of self discovery was highly intriguing and provided a solid foundation for a top class plot.

...

Tactics is still better...

im gonna have to say FF 9 its such a great story it just pulls me in.

It's late. I don't have the energy to bash FFXII's story.

Final Fantasy Tactics had the best plot, in my opinion. I was engrossed with everything that occured in that game. Awesome characters, tons of conflict among them, romance, etc...

I'd have to say that my all tie favorit ff story was VI. The character development was amazing, especially since it utilized so many characters. It is really difficult to develop the characters of a story when there are so many, but this game accomplished it.

I agree. IX will always be my favorite FF, but the story in Tactics is simply superior. IX has excellent character development, but the story itself isn't anything particularly special, it's just insanely charming. Tactics, on the other hand, has great character development AND an epic story dealing with war, politics, church conspiracies and what-have-you.

I think that FFIX was hugely overlooked whilst VII was overrated, albeit still great, the fanboys have jusr ruined the whole appeal of FFVII now. The only thing that annoyed me about IX is that the storyline didn't pick up until the end of disk 2. Other than that the game was spot on.

It was still a close call between VII, VIII, IX and X :neomon:
