Boss Takes 18+ hrs to beat? O_o

Throwing up from exhaustion? Can't say I've ever heard of that one. I normally stay up for 18-24 hours and I've never thrown up. xD

But that is a bit ridiculous.

I could probably only stand playing for 45 minutes before I got bored as hell and moved onto something else. :wacky:

Holy God. If you read some of the comments you note that this isn't the first time they did this.

I really like the quote at the top 'we don't want you to forget your friends and family' but you created a boss thats almost impossible to kill...swell.

It doesn't mention how strong the people were who were fighting it, could be a factor.

It doesn't mention whether it was 18 hours without a break here and there.

Sorry, but they'v got to be doing something wrong, if there's no details or hints on how to beat it, then there's obviously a trick to it, so they are just holding out on the details to make the victory a rare thing. I would never sit infront of a computer playing a game for 18+ hours straight fighting one thing. If they were throwing up and shit from exhaustion, then that's their own faults for not thinking "I can't do this, maybe I should go out into that crazy place where the sun shines and rain falls which I haven't seen for months, you know, that weird strange place that's outside my front door."

Its pretty much true, usually when fighting stuff like this you'd swap people throughout the fight ofcourse. Most people wouldnt be able to stay in for the whole fight

Yeah its possible with swapping.Still its not very fair.If you battle against it first 12 hours and then leave you dont get nothing :( Still it makes the game challenging and fun.To wipe out a boss with friends in 18 hours is really cool.Thinking out tactics and formations and who tanks and all that kind of stuff. Its actually cooler then it seems at first.I played once a game where i killed a boss with a party for 5.4 hours. We had some breaks in that time when some of the guys rested others killed. It was boring in some points, but overall it was tons of fun.

I'd rather poke my own eyes out with tooth picks than sit there for that long trying to kill something, although I suppose there will always be some sad bastards that inist on doing shit like this for bragging rights, I'd just call it stupid myself.

Why creat summat that takes that long to beat? Bloody stupid. Even if you tagged in and out with people, you would still have to find said people that were commited enough, I lost my rag fighting something for about 3/4 of an hour

Imagine dying 17 hours in or having a power cut hahaha :wacky:

That's really nothing. When AV first came out a party spent over 24 hours fighting it, only to lose.

And for the nay sayers, yes the fight was true and yes they were all maxed out at level 75. If they weren't they wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes let alone 18 hours.

For those that haven't played Final Fantasy, this isn't all that uncommon. This boss had never been killed before and for the most part new fights like this take a long time. Like I sad Absolute Virtue took over 24 hours to LOSE. Fights such as Vitra, Jorm, and so on would take 10-20 hours to beat as well.
If any thing, that time is rather nice for a first try, seeming as how it changes its appearance every now and then. For those those that said they were 'doing something wrong.' people across all servers have been fighting this mob for months now and they were the first get its health moving like that. So you can't really say they were doing something wrong. They were the only ones on all servers to be doing something RIGHT.

And at least its not like how Absolute Virtue was, after 24 hours of fighting and getting its health down, it did a move that cured its health all the way back to 100%

Edit: For those that thinks less of the game because of the length of this fight. It takes time for some of these things. Some of those fights that took over 10 hours to beat, can now be beat in under 30 mins. It just takes time, practices, and a lot of testing.

I had a friend in the linkshell "BBQ" from the Odin server which tried their hand at defeating Absolute Virtue. I'm not sure which LS you're referring too, but this fight also dragged on for several days.

I loved FFXI. I played it for 5 years and got 4 jobs to 75, one of which was beastmaster, which was probably the most frustrating/rewarding thing I've ever done in my life IRL or online. I eventually quit though due to an aspect of the game that in my opinion, is even more frustrating than the length of certain battles in the game. Don't get me wrong though, FFXI is a really fun game and I regret deleting my characters and account every time I find myself with free time on my hands. I loved my beastmaster. It just wasn't worth the frustration of FFXI's dreaded "NM" System

Basically, there are special monsters in Final Fantasy XI called Notorious Monsters or "NMs". Generally, NMs are a variation of regular monster in the area that will only appear once every few hours while the regular monsters. They also have a chance of dropping a unique item, armor, or weapon that can't be obtained by any other means (excluding farming for gill and buying it on the auction house). The issue here is that each individual NM has it's own specific spawn area, where it will spawn one at a time, only once every "x" amount of real life hours, "x" equaling a variable that can be anywhere from 1 hour to 24+ hours depending on the NM. To make matters worse, most NMs have what players come to refer to as "respawn Windows". What this means is that an NM might respawn every 4-8 real life hours. So as soon as the NM is defeated, there will be 4 hours that the NM absolutely will not respawn. After the forth hour the NM will have a chance of spawning in place of one of the regular monsters in the area, for the next 4 hours. This duration of time at which the NM is able to spawn is it's "Window". Lastly, because these monsters only appear once per server, every X amount of real life hours, and are the only means of finding their exclusive items, EVERYONE who needs the item is going to be there looking for it also. This means that you have to compete against everyone else who's there to claim the NM by attacking it before anyone else does. If someone besides you claims and kills the monster, than the only options you have are waiting around for how ever many hours it takes to respawn and try again, spending days farming up gill from regular spawning monsters to buy the item from someone else, or simply being gimp and doing without (which, depending on the item and it's value to your job, can make people really disrespect you.)

What this all boils down to is that in order to get Many of the best armor, weapons, and items for your job, you will either have to go out somewhere and farm monsters you can easily solo for days and days to save up the gil to buy the item, or you have to find out which NM drops the item you need, be of a high enough level to defeat the monster, wait hours upon hours, killing the same small group of monsters over and over until it appears, then you have to beat anyone else who is there after the same item as you at claiming the monster by attacking it first, and THEN you have to be lucky enough to actually get the item to drop from the NM, as most NM's drops are NOT 100%. In fact, most of them are below 50%.

The monsters that this thread was originally about are obviously more grueling to get anything from than any NM you can camp and fight on your own. Like the NM's I just explained, many of these "High Level Notorious Monsters" or "HNMs" only respawn every 24+ hours, require around 16+ level 70-75 players to defeat depending on the HNM as well as the jobs, equipment, and skill of the players. They also only have a percent chance of dropping just one of their valuable items.

To defeat these monsters and get their items, players will band together into a Linkshell group. (pretty much the same thing as a clan or guild in other MMOs) These groups generally keep track of time of death "ToD" of the HNMs they plan to hunt, then show up before it's window opens. Like regular NMs, there will be competition for the HNM, however there will be entire groups competing over the monster rather than a few individuals. Obviously, this is bound to cause tensions between players on a massive scale.

Because there is only a chance of a specific item droping from an HNM, each Linkshell group generally has their method of distributing them. Most commonly, linkshells establish a point system where a person in the group records point earning statistics of each player in the group, Then the members of the group will auction off the HNM drops for their points.

that ultimately boils down to, is that each HNM drop will have a line of players waiting for it, and the amount of time you are able to contribute to your group will determine you're place in that line, meaning it could take months before you actually get the item. Because all of this political like garbage is done by the players, and not the game... it's not uncommon at all for people to turn corrupt, screw people off, play favorites, start a political BS campaign inside the group... and ultimately ruin the system for a lots of people.

So yeah... FFXI's NM system is the one aspect of the game that pretty much ruin it for me.

I was talking about the first few LS's that fought AV on another server, using the wall trick. I watched the AV news role in for weeks like the Olympics as server after server fought it.

I'm not sure what the laundry list of NM basic info was about, but personally that was my favorite part of the game. I loved having to camp and claim. It drew out between hardcore games and avid gamers. Is why I liked the game a lot more then WoW. It seemed to me that in WoW, ANY player can get their hands on the hardest and rarest items while in FF in order to do so you have to put in the time. And it makes the armor all the sweeter cause when people see you wearing it, they know what it took for you to obtain it.

I'm not going to lie... I totally agree with you. I loved the sense of accomplishment after getting an important item like the Joyeuse or Byakko's Haidate. *insert a short mourning pause here for having deleted it all* It's just all the political garbage AKA "Linkshell Drama" that goes along with getting the big items.

I was in line for my choice of the Hecatomb harness or kirin's Osode for several months, three different times in three different linkshells but...

Linkshell 1: The first linkshell didn't use any kind of point system. It was supposedly based on attendance. The issue with this is that the leader started doing "sea" run's with the linkshell, and used her private social linkshell as a means of getting all of her friends through the Chain's of Promathia missions to get access to "Sea" areas. That allowed her friends and people who'd already had access to sea an unfair advantage to double their attendance. When a friend of mine got undercut for his shot at Kirin's Osode, he went straight to the linkshell's forums and got evidence from the public log that the person who got the Osode over him had missed far more "Sky" runs as him, but the leader included the "Sea" runs in the equation to justify the decision. I suggested that the "CoP" quests be done with the sky linkshell if it was going to have an impact on attendance logs in general, Of course the leader of the LS agreed, and continued to do the missions with her friends in her social ls, saying "I'll let you know when we need you." Only thing I could really do at this point is walk away and find a new linkshell.

Linkshell 2: Linkshell number 2 had an awesome group of people. The friends I made in this one were with me until the day I quit. The interesting thing about this linkshell is that the leader turned out to be my cousin's best friend's cousin... living right across town from me, and I never known until a few months after I'd left the linkshell... but that's beside the point. They were nice people, but extremely unfamiliar with what they were doing. Too many couldn't find their way NMs and got lost/killed on the way, causing the linkshell to miss a bunch of them. So obviously, their first Kirin attempt resulted in TONS of exp lost and disappointment no other attempts were made during the remainder of my time with the linkshell.

Linkshell 3: By the time I joined this one everyone in it pretty much had everything they wanted. By the time I was getting close to the front of the line for my Osode or Hecatomb harness, all of 5 people were showing up. The linkshell finally disband before I got anything out of it.

After linkshell 3, I pretty much give up on ever getting an Osode... which really haunted me after getting beastmaster to 75, as the +10 Charisma and... whatever defense it has, make it's by far the best body piece for beastmaster when trying to charm those evil black Korrigans in the top of the boyoda tree. My lack of the hecatomb harness had been haunting me even more so, because I could have used it on both my warrior and beastmaster. ;-;

I can imagine that getting an item or taking down something like this would be beyond just a great acomplishment but.... I dunno, THIS long for a boss to be taken down is just... cheap of the developers.

I mean, 5 hours is okay if you REALLY want to push it. XD

Must drop some very epic items. By chance know how many times its been beaten? I saw 2 images of it on wiki in 2 diffrent forms and it doesnt look al that epic. I was expecting something...huge. Though the image wasnt very clear in its size compared to someones character.

I was talking about that on the other page. Most of the 'harder' bosses like this take a long time like this when fighting it for the first time. I have no doubt that in a year or so this fight will be 30 mins to an hour.

Even the fights that took 20-24 hours have been recorded at being beat in 10 mins at some points.

It hasn't been beaten. It changes many many times when fighting. I can't recall how many forms have been seen so far. Some look weak and small, some look strong and huge.

I really don't see how people have the patience to stay up over 18 hours to beat one boss, I start feeling sick after an all-nighter but staying on one game and battling the same boos for over 18 hours would just become tedious, I tend to find games get boring if you spend 2/3 maybe 4 hours on them. D:

It varies from person to person. Most of the players will rotate out, but people like me had no problem with staying in one spot for 24+.
When you've been playing the game for 5-6 years you get really excited over the promise of new exiting armor, and that in itself gives you the drive to stay until the end of the fight. Drops are so VERY rare in this game. Example, I played for many many years and did the some of the same fights for a daily bases for 5 years. And yet I never got a single drop. So you tend to want to be there for the opportunity to get that item. Cause most likely you'll never see it again.

yeah i heard about this on xplay and they were actualy passing out of exhaustion

It's all over the media now, but pretty much every media site leaves out the one key thing.

People were complaining about feeling ill and tired before the fight even started. They had already been up for a day straight doing their normal gaming routine, so to add that on was the kicker. It's not the fight, its natural human reaction.

Really? That does sorta change the story a bit. it's typical of the media to leave out stuff like that so that the story seems more juicy >_>

But still... while it IS doable, i WOULD not want to spend that much time on a boss XD

This is now depressing. SE let the media get to them. Despite the fact that fights like this are what they players WANT and had been wanting more of for the past 5 years, SE let the media of people that don't even play the game get to them.

Square Enix
The past two weeks have seen considerable feedback from players regarding the amount of time required to combat the Pandemonium Warden, a recently implemented Notorious Monster (NM). Discussion has spread significantly throughout forums, and it has become apparent that this is indeed an issue of major unrest in the community.

We would like to assure players that the development and management teams place a high value on their feedback, and the issue has since been taken under serious consideration. Together with Absolute Virtue, it has been deemed that the combative techniques for weakening these NMs are too difficult. As a result, some players have engaged these enemies using unanticipated methods which led to extended battle times. It is by no means the desire of the development team to see players involved in encounters that require an excessive amount of time and effort to complete. It was for this reason that previous measures were put into practice which prohibited NMs from being held in battle for prolonged periods. In response to these events, we have determined that further alterations are required to prevent such battles from exceeding a certain predetermined length of time.

Included in the version update scheduled for early September will be modifications to the degree of difficulty of Pandemonium Warden (and associated pets), Absolute Virtue (and associated pets), and Jailer of Love. The aim of these changes is to create battles where a decisive outcome may be reached within a shorter period of time.

The development and management teams would like to take this opportunity to express their commitment to a healthy and wholesome game environment for players everywhere to enjoy, and to thank them for the continued feedback.
