Hi everyone,

First of all, I am not sure I'm posting in the right place, so moderators, please move this thread to the appropriate place if necessary. I tried to post this a while ago but for some reason it wouldn't post. I am therefore trying again now. Also everybody, I'm sorry about the very simple question which is to follow!

So, I recently moved back to the UK having spent 2 years teaching English in China. When I left home, division of property didn't exactly go fairly. I'd had a vague idea for years that this would happen, and I have ended up with none of the property that my brother and I shared when we were kids. Some of this was very important to me for much more personal reasons, but among it all was the Final Fantasy games - all in all not the most important of things, but for our purposes here, it is.

I went onto Amazon UK to set about replacing all the Final Fantasy games I have lost on the Playstation systems - VII, VIII, IX, X and a copy of XII that is gathering dust, and a PS2. And looked at VI out of curiosity. I didn't think this was going to be difficult. Slightly expensive, but nothing that'd break the bank particularly. Until I saw that a copy of VII was going for £87 new. VIII was going for £97 new and IX, one that must without question be replaced, was over £120 new. The used copies were much more reasonable, prices that didn't make my eyes sore. But I don't trust them to work properly - I'm not sure whether it was how my brother and I handled game disks years ago, but I do think PS1 disks were more easily damaged.

I'm not good at knowing where to look for this stuff. Clearly. Some of you must have bought these games years and years after they were released. Where did you get them from? And as a side question, are PS1 disks more susceptible to damage, or were we just heavy-handed children? We did play FF much more often than anything else. Am I wrong to mistrust buying second-hand? I have literally never done so.

Thanks very much!

i'm afraid that that's the sort of prices you can expect for brand new ones now. They are more collectors items these days. 6,7,8 + 9 are all available on the playstation store if you have a ps3. FF7 is on steam and there are rumours they are releasing more FF titles on steam in the near future. FFX is coming out soon in HD and it's also rumoured that XII could be doing the same. There are other ways to play these titles but I probably cannot discuss them without being warned by a moderator. Good luck. If you have any other questions hit me up.

FF7 is also available on the Square Enix online store in digital format; not sure about the others though.

I personally believe that ps1 disks r MORE durable than ps2 disks. all my ps1 disks from i was a kid still work great. whereas some of my ps2 disks dont. But as far as where to buy them, i use amazon so i dont really know where else to go, sorry buddy :(

Oh and if your looking for what will prolly end up being cheaper/better, go look for a ps3 and download all those games from the playstion store. theyre like 7-12 american dollars, not sure how much that translate to ur currency tho :/

Okay, so, before I deal with what you've actually said, I'd just like to thank you guys :) I am used to forums where if you ask massively basic questions like this you'd sometimes either extremely unhelpful answers or worse, ones that are loaded with sarcasm. So thank you.

@iSmiff - I was afraid that might be the overwhelming answer. I haven't yet bought a replacement Playstation console of any kind. I always get a bit nervous when looking into that sort of thing as it's a fair bit of money. How much space, approximately, do they take up? I think that above a certain memory capacity the PS3 isn't backwards compatible (I may be spouting rubbish here). *That* would be useless to me considering I'd be using it to play PS1 and PS2 games, and if I'm crazy enough to try out FXIII despite all the warnings to the contrary.
@Zeroxys - Thanks for your help, too. It makes me feel a lot better knowing those games are $7-12 - I work in £s by the way. Having read what you said about disk durability, I'm immensely saddened by what must have been a lot of heavy-handedness by myself and my brother over the years.

I'd very much appreciate answers to the questions I wrote above, if you know them. Or, if I do happen to be talking rubbish, let me know. I'm sure it's pretty clear now that I almost repel technology. Thanks again!

I'd say combined, 6,7,8,9 = 10GB or so. The original 'FAT' PS3's are backwards compatible but the newer models aren't. I recommend doing a bit more research into which models are and aren't backwards compatible.

I would like to buy some old "new" games as well but severely lack funds, college student lol.

It depends on the model of the ps3. As was mentioned the first "fat" one was full backwards capability. I have one of the newer "fat" ones I believe and it plays ps1 but not ps2. Also as mentioned FF's 1-9 excluding the actual 3 since that is on the DS can be purchased through the psn store. And if you run out of room on your harddrive they are saved to your download list. So you can delete and redownload as many times to your heart's content since you bought it.

Your best bet, if you want them cheap, is digital downloads. I-IV you can get on IPads, and I think I-III you can get on all IOS phones. I-IX you can get on the PSN, VII and VIII are available through steam (at least I think VIII is) VII and VIII also you can get digitally through Square Enix store.

If you want a physical copy of all these games... good luck there... Best bet for I-IV is to get them on PSP (if you have a PSP that is) V-IX your only way is to get them on PS1 (since England first FF game was VII if I remember correctly) (assuming you don't know chinese but I'm sure those copies are worth even more on the NES/Snes) as far as X is concerned, I would wait for the HD remake... which will hopefully be out this year.... XII and XIII shouldn't be too expensive, and I am sure you can find them at game stops used, if you don't mind them used.

Hi guys,

Thanks for your replies. As I live in a pretty chaotic house where disks can quite easily get damaged by small children, I wasn't planning on going down the disks route again, so the only more consistent option is that of digital downloads. However I don't yet have a PS3. It seems I will always be one generation behind as far as games go from now on. My next task then is to decide which version of the PS3 to get. Seems to be made more complicated by the fact that they have varying degrees of backwards-compatibility and that some of the smaller memory models that are more compatible with PS1 and PS2, have been discontinued. I'll do some more research.

If you've settled on the digital downloads route there is no problem. All PS3s can play digital downloads from the store.

I just read your reply, iSmiff, and automatically put my head in my hands. Of course backwards compatibility isn't at all relevant to digital downloading. I suppose we all have off-days, don't we, and that's my excuse for today - it's Friday, and Friday 13th no less. I'll put it down to that. You mentioned specifically that I-IX are available on the PSN. I assume also that X, X-2, XII, XIII and XIII-2 would be as well? I've just looked on playstation.com and they all seem to be - I'm just checking just in case there's something technical I've missed?

Thanks, and sorry about being technically useless :)

No worries LanguageSponge
All I know 100% is this;
6,7,8,9 are all on PSN

I THINK, and please don't take this for certain, I THINK 5 is and 1,2,3,4 could possibly be.

X + X-2 are scheduled for a HD rerelease although there is no release date currently anddddd XII could possibly have a HD rerelease in the future, I imagine it depends how the sales of the XHD-X-2HD bundles go.

XIII-2; no idea. If it's based on XIII i'd probably of hated it.

I-IV are only available for the PSP(Excluding the DS remakes), while V-IX are available for download for both PSP and PS3. So, if you really wanted a system to hold EVERY one of the games, I think your bet would be a PSP(Or Vita, I think they avail of the same downloadable content). Obviously, this depends on the memory card size, and so on.

As for XIII... You're going to need a PS3 or Xbox for it and its many sequels. Not sure if you're very into them, but still.

I'd go for buying a new system, tbh. By the way you describe the prices of the disc copies, you'll be paying around about as much for all of these games as a second-hand console- while the Digital copies are relatively cheap for the games.

That's just my opinion on the topic.

Update :)

I ended up buying a PS3, and the 500 GB version at that. I bought it as i didn't want to have any issues with memory capacity. I have since downloaded VII and IX and have just bought XIII to have a go at. I am sceptical about it as many have been before me but as it was just over a tenner I thought I might as well go with it. In the near future I'll be getting VIII as well, although I'm delaying it because I didn't like it all that much as a kid, and VI will be the next Final Fantasy title I get my hands on after I've got Metal Gear Solid 4 :)

Is there any hope as you guys see it for a remaster of XII? I am now eagerly awaiting the release of FFX HD along with many others of you! Oh, and based on the desire I had to download IX within a few minutes of connecting my PS3 to the net, I've realised that IX must be my favourite, with X being a close second. I've not even bothered downloading GTA 5 yet, which has surprised me.

I think a remastered XII is a possibility, it probably depends how well X/X-2 sells. If it's worth their time doing it, I think they definitely will. Let us know how you get on with XIII :)
