Car Mileage Tax?

"The idea -- which involves tracking drivers through Global Positioning System (GPS) units in their cars -- is gaining support in some states as a way of making up for a shortfall in highway funding. Oregon carried out a pilot program and deemed it "successful."

Officials in Massachusetts told CNN this week that there has been talk of proposing such a system for the state. Colin Durant, a spokesman for Gov. Deval Patrick, said "privacy would be our top priority."

Patrick on Friday announced a different plan to help raise highway funds: a 19-cent increase in the state's gas tax. But he said that alone "will not solve all our challenges," and some "major reforms" will be needed.

Under a VMT (vehicle miles traveled) tax program, GPS units would allow the government to keep track of how much each car is driven and where -- though not necessarily with exact street locations. The government could also track other things, including the time each car enters a certain zone.

For decades, the fuel taxes that drivers pay at the pump have been the central source of federal and state funding for roads and bridges. But they are no longer nearly enough. Last fall, Congress approved an $8 billion infusion into the depleted federal highway trust fund.

The problem stems in part from something good: More and more Americans are buying vehicles that have better gas mileage. That means less gas tax money from each car, though the car is causing the same amount of wear and tear on the roads"

Goodness I'm so glad that this plan wasn't pursued more fully. This really is an invasion of privacy in my eyes. Really!!??? It seems like we are going to get taxed for everything in the future...even moreso than we already are now. This could spell disaster for our economy if something even close to this passed while we are still in the recession that we are. No one would want to drive anymore because in addtion to going to the stores and etc and paying sales taxes and state taxes...you'd be getting taxed just for going to the store.

Anyways, I thought this was interesting, so I had to post it. What are your thoughts on this?

I don't like this at all. People can't help it if they live far away from their jobs, so should they be punished for having to drive farther than those who live close enough to walk to work? That's bullshit. My mother has to drive an hour each way because she's a teacher for example, it's not like she can just work anywhere. This is such garbage. Totally assuming that people who drive more are only doing it on vacations, which is not true. And you shouldn't have to pay extra just because you live in a shithole and have to drive far to get out of it to go on a nice vacation either.

Most people can't afford to just up and move to wherever they want, so it's not fair to make people pay more money just over stupid geographical issues. And even if they have the money, there are so many other issues involved. Hell, I've been trying for a year and a half now to buy a townhome ten minutes away from where I am now, and no one will even take our money because of the real estate industry being so full of lies and manipulation that make it difficult for people to move to new places even if they can afford to. And then there's trying to secure jobs in particular places--if you want to live downtown near to where a lot of the big workplaces/offices are, you often have to live in an expensive apartment/condo, like in New York City or something. But if you want to live in a suburb, you could end up driving like an hour to and from work each day if your job happens to be in the city, where high concentrations of jobs usually are. Maybe certain retail stores can transfer you to another location if they're a chain and have lots of stores, but even those are often availability-specific, and don't like having to do the extra work of transferring people around all over the place.

So, yeah. This is dumb, and I really hope they don't go through with it either. More accountability on the part of where all our country's money is going, would be nice, and would solve all these "funding shortage" issues I think.

I am greatly in favor of this. Not only will this reduce emissions, but this will hopefully help more Americans get in shape. If you can't drive to work, you live too far away from the city, and hopefully your job will fire you and it'll open up for us urban Satanists to get jobs. Urban Satanist American = United States of American fat pig dogs should walk more anyway.

So just because I got a job that can be an hour away from my house driving you think I should be punished and fired so you can get the job because you're closer? Yeah ok buddy I'm not going comment on that anymore...

But Yeah I really Think this has to be against some kinda law, and I don't think anyone will persue it, i mean what are they going do? come to your house and say "put this in your car so we can track how far you travel and we will tax you for it at the end of the month?" No thanks

I know that states are having money problems and are trying to fix roads and everything, but they can think of a better way than this.
