Hey guys I have started FFVIII again and am determined to complete it as its been the game I have been most on and off with!

However I am just wondering are any of the characters suited to certain classes or can any do anything?

I was thinking Squall would be your warrior, Rinoa possibly a white mage, Quistis maybe a black mage? I'm not too sure so was just wondering your oppinions and any advice for what to junction for each character!

Cheers guys!

Well...
Zell = Monk
Quistis = Blue Mage (Because she learns enemy attacks)
Squall = Warrior (Because of the whole swordy thing)
Irvine = Gunner (Stating the obvious :P)
Rinoa = Possibly a Tamer because she uses a Dog to attack with as part of her limit breaks? Dunnow..
Selphie = Harder to class, maybe some sort of Mage class?

That's what I think anywho! =D

You see, the thing is with FFVIII is that you can really make them anything. With the Draw System you draw many different types of magic to make your characters strong with the Junctioning System. I mean Quistis is naturally a Blue Mage as those are her limit breaks, but really each character doesn't really have a specific class. They can all use magic. Normally I always draw the strongest types of magic for all my characters so I can junction it properly and make them strong. I never really tried to divide my characters into class. I hope that all made sense. <.<;

In a nutshell, The Job classes in Final Fantasy VIII are like ahat mandy said, many of the PC and TPC's have abilities from many different job classes. though the character due have qualities specific to them. They are the following:

Squall Leonheart: Warrior
Qustis Trepe: Blue Mage
Zell Dincht: Monk
Selphie Tilmitt: Gambler
Rinoa Heartilly: Beastmaster/Sorcerer (basically a better version of a Sage)
Irvine Kinneas: Gunner

Seifer Almasy: Warrior/Magic Knight
Laguna Loire: Gunner
Kiros Seagall: Undefined (Though has qualities of Ninja)
Ward Zabac: Dragoon
Edea Kramer: Black Mage

In my many many playthroughs of FFVIII, I never set a class for anyone. The thing is, everyone is pretty much the same statistically, only being off by a small amount. The only exception to this is Rinoa, who has about 20 points higher Str and Mag over the 2nd highest (both Squall I believe), so she'll always be the strongest. And also because classes and magic and such aren't pre-defined, you can make them however you want to.

Because magics hold weight in how high your stats are, I never use them. I just use the brute force method and it works like a charm, so long as you build your Str stat with a good magic. But, if breaking up the party into separate classes is your preferred method, then I'd imagine Misty and Galms posts will be more helpful than mine. :ryan:

Well, when I played for the first time when I was like 10 or something, Squall was just uber-powerful compared to the rest of the characters. >< He had 4x the hitpoints and more than twice the strength and magic abilities of anybody else. It was sad really.

But since then, I have been a little more smart about it.

= Squall is always my warrior. I give him a couple healing spells and revive spells to use, just in case.
= Quistis, I usually make her a mixture between black magic and status effect magic.
= Selphie, she's my black mage all the way.
= Irvine usually is my gunner/warrior - but sometimes if I need to he has more GFs than the other characters.
= Zell is my healer, and he has all of the buff stuff - like haste and aura and stuff.
= Rinoa is my replacement healer. If I can't use Zell. I really never use her unless I have to.

I don't think I missed anyone did I??

My thoughts are mostly the same with everyone else who posted.
Although Selphie would be my OMFGWTFCharacter.
I would classify her as my 1337-h4x0r Black Mage.
Squall was unquestionably my most powerful character because everytime his turn comes up, i always make sure he has Aura lol
Well nothing beats Selphie's The End spell :-)

I never really tried to "class" my chars in 8 either. Kinda played like Serah said. I just tried to draw as much of the strongest magic I could find, so I could junction to anyone to make them stronger. Also moved my GF's around alot to see who could get the most advantage from having them equipped.
