In my own opinion, I do not think Cloud is overrated. However, the fans make him overrated by praising him far too much and the fact that I feel the game is overrated could make the character overrated as well. So whilst I do think he's not, other factors can make me view the argument differently.

I don't think Cloud himself is either but Final Fantasy's Mini Series is coming to make me resentful of one of my favorite classics >.> I remember when FFVII wasn't the Square Enix Grail and was just a fun game NOW they make FFVII the poster boy for ALL of Final Fantasy, To be honest I'd like if they highlighted some older games too like VI but it seems they are hell bent on VII. ;)

Sadamirite?

cloud is veary comonly seen but not overated.

Mod Edit: Can you please put a bit more effort into your post? This is a discussion thread so tell us why you think he is not overrated. Thanks.

He's not overrated.
I think Cloud is one of the perfect game characters, because he has got some contras aswell.
You see, soooo many game characters have got only pros. I mean like, think about Zack? He has basically a nice life and a great personality, there is nothing to hate about him (well, mostly).
Cloud however has got some dark sides and bad personality traits, such as being whiny. Really whiny, even though his friends are around him and embrace him with as much love as possible.
I never liked the over-talented characters anyway.
Another theory of mine (omg, here we go again...) is that people want to be special. Looked at as special. But because Cloud has gotten much attention, and is now hated for it, the people who want to be special think that he's just something that everyone loves, and therefore, if they love him too, they'll just be hated because of their love towards Cloud. (You know what kind of love I'm talking about here! Not real love, but fanlove >.>)

The game is overrated. As for Cloud, Im not quite sure. He isnt my favourite lead role or indeed my least fav. But I dont see the big deal in him. Geez, he had his own cologne released!?! Extreme to the max or what??? He doesnt do anything that makes me give a crap about him. So in regards to if he is or isnt, Im on the fence with this one. Perhaps some see him as overrated due to the amount of fanboys he has, they do make a huge deal outta him.

I do think Cloud is a little bit over rated but he is an amazing character with a good background and story. He made FFVII what it was and I think he is and isn't over rated. Maybe he could be mentioned a bit more now and then, but he's a great character overall.

He did kind of revolutionize gaming with FFVII, I don't think FFVII would have been half as big as it was without Cloud in it possibly wouldn't have given FF the name it has in certain places now, I mean FFVII gave all FF's a name here after all. FFVII opened the doors for VIII, IX, X etc.

I don't think he's overrated really, he's a good character I believe. I think that if you were to ask a Final Fantasy fan, or anyone who's heard of the Final Fantasy franchise to name a character, I think most likely they would say "Cloud Strife." Final Fantasy VII, I believe was a big step for Square Soft, it was on Playstation, a new console that was just starting out, the first Final Fantasy to have 3D graphics, this time the monsters and characters actually made body movements as they stood, about to attack. Everything was a step forward. I think Sephiroth may be more over-rated then Cloud is due to the amount of arguements I've seen on websites and especially Youtube claiming that Sephiroth is the best villian or "Is better than Kefka in Final Fantasy VI."

I think he's overrated, yes. I really don't see what's so great about him, tbh. I didn't find him to be all that interesting as a character. He had some amusing lines but I really didn't find his personality to be all that deep or fascinating. Granted, I haven't played any of the prequels or sequels; I did watch Advent Children which didn't really expand on his character any.

I have nothing against those who like him but I just don't think he's all that great.

That may be, but I still dont like him as a character. Im not saying he shouldnt have been in the game, I think the game itself is overrated and yes, maybe that is perhaps due to Cloud. But its still nothing wow to me.

Cloud is certainly not overrated.

Cloud is a remarkable character for the fact that he is very human. Sure, he tries to look all badass and everything, but it's clearly not him. Like every real person, he has self-esteem problems, a girl he likes but thinks doesn't notices him, a less-than-idyllic family history, a role-model (Zack) and doesn't have a job.

He's a very realistic character. He fears what may happen, isn't very confident, and often says quirky things. And he suffers from airsickness.

Such a character has lots of room for development and change, and his realism only increases the appeal -- he isn't a character too 'awesome and heroic' to seem removed from the player's perspective.

Like many others have said, the only thing that's overrated about this particular char is what the most rabid, frothing fans choose to highlight. Many people do not realize that the initial appeal comes from the realism of the character. By the time this is realized, the two major traits (big sword and looks) are so overrated and paraded about in fanart so much that it becomes sickening. Careless fans are to blame, but not the char.

Although I do agree with alot of what you said I think popular appeal has to be taken into account in anybody's estimation of any character.

Aside from the neon punk look that was IMO so brilliantly executed with Cloud and indeed the rest of the cast, Cloud showed rather remarkably an unfliching resolve in every endeavour he and the rest of the cast took on. He was always the natural leader, something I feel can't be said for the rest of the main characters of any installment and overcame adversity other characters only had nightmares about. The average fan will compare Cloud to the likes of Squall, Zidane or Tidus and say Cloud had to deal with immense personal loss, radical health deterioration and a crippling loss of identity.

The toughest task for the others IMO was finally getting the girl. It doesn't mean I hate the characters or indeed the games they're incorporated into but I just feel 'saving the world' should never be taken lightly, which I feel they have done since FF7.

LOL you have a very good point! I stand corrected -- Cloud also stands out from the rest of many FF characters because of the features you've described. And I agree, the whole 'saving the world ploy again' (to quote the Mummy 2 movie) does get old. There are more things to do than just saving the universe and everything. One can only hope that writers at SE will come up with something in a new vein.

Cloud isn't overrated in my opinion. He was just a bit pessimist for me. He was still a good character for the story, rather powerful and it was interesting watching him interact with the other characters. Overrated? No. Pessimist? Yes.

I find it upsetting that people claim Cloud's overly angsty about everything, even though in the original game (you know, the only one anyone really cares about) he only got depressed, like, twice.

Possibly. I don't really care. I do know that my Mom and Lil Broski dig him, so that's cool. I didn't mind him much in Kingdom Hearts either.

I like him because his American voice is done by the dude that plays "Jason" from General Hospital. Unfortunately, he's not on the show anymore.

I think there are a lot of good protagonists ranging across the Final Fantasy games, and a lot of which are good characters.
My favourite is yes, Cloud. Only because he has such a thorough and interesting background story, and isn't TOO moody.. moody enough, but nothing on the Squall level, and not hyper on the Tidus level. (Though I like all the main characters).

And as someone previously said, he is from a milestone final fantasy game that was probably the most popular, so he's definitely going to be highly rated. (Over or under, down to personal opinion).

Bashing Cloud were they? :hmph:

They must think it's cool to bash the protagonist of the game that single-handedly revolutionized the RPG genre as we know it then. Sure, fans may give him huge amounts of praise, but it's only because he deserves it. I've also yet to see an FF protagonist that tops him. Sure opinions may vary, but I'm certain he'll have the most of those as well. The only person whom I can honestly say that has a chance of taking his mantle thus far is Noctis Lucis Caelum. But that remains to be seen. The figure that still lies asleep in the fantasy, and all that. :smartass:

... They weren't by any chance newcomers to the series who consider Lightning & XIII to be the greatest thing since sliced bread were they?

:moogle:
