I apologize if this is repetition of another thread, but- I was just thinking about how many times I've said someone's name wrong while playing a Final Fantasy game, only to find out way way later it's something completely different...

Ha, any one else ever had this problem? And with which characters?

For example, In X, I always thought it was TIE-dus, and then found out it's pronounced TEE-dus. ...Though I still call him Tie-dus.

Probably the most phenomenal one for me is Cait Sith. I always pronounced it like it sounded. And then for some odd reason, I looked it up and discovered it's pronounced "Kett Shee." o_O ...Yeah.

Also, a smaller one, I called Vaan, Van (like the shoe) up until the game's release when I was sorely put in my place.

I always say Tie-dus, even though i know its wrong i still think it sounds better. As for cait sith, dont they say it as it sounds in advent children? hmm.
Zidane is another one that is usually mis-pronounced, i say it with a large A, different from the french football player.

There are authorative pronunciations? I thought it was tie-dus. In FF6, I say Cyan like Syan (which is also how I say the colour cyan), but the kana suggest otherwise. I also rhyme Sabin with cabin, but my friend Dragon Goddess says it like sah-been, I think.

They should put in the guides that come with the game, how a name is pronounced.
Japanese never have to worry about these kinds of things. lucky them.

Tie-dus is a big problem,I really didn't know how to pronounce it at first.Even if I do know now I prefer to call him Tie-dus rather than Tee-dus.
Also Questis,at first I pronounced her name Kue-stis when it's Key-stis.

I cal Tidus = Tee-dus

I usually pronounce them according how characters pronounce when calling that respective ones.

I also say 'Red Treze' (Treze being Thirteen in portuguese) or Nanakee and Vaan i prononce it; Baan.

I gotta say some names in Japanese look really cool. Kuraudo Sutoraifu is WIN!

I will NEVER call him Tee-dus....

I always thought Bahamut was pronounced Ba-Ha-Mut...then I played FF12 and found that it's pronounced Ba-Ha-Moot o_O

Lmaaaoo!

I called Princess Ashe like (Ashy)...like when you need lotion. =/. Until FFXII when they actually pronounced it.

Also, Vaan sounded like the type of car. I still to this day call him like that when I see it in txt until I hear it when I play the game. Rofl.

I still to this day call Tidus (Tie-Dus) instead of (Tee-dus) lol
Vaan i called Van until i heard his name being called in the game :P
Wakka i called (Waa-ka) like waking something..

Lol, I've never really had much problem with X's name pronouciation... Especially so with voice acting.. lol.

I simply split the words up and pronounce them individually.. Though sometimes it might be inaccurate, if so, i wouldn't know, lols. E.G. Quina = Qui-Na

Don't ask me about one syllables though, I pronounce accordingly, somewhat. E.G. Bartz = Bart-Z

Lol.

There are very few set pronunciation's in FF.

Most of FFX and beyond have a certain way of being said, if only because we actually get to hear the names spoken. Tidus being the only exception here: by the way, it can be said both ways as evidenced by the KH series (in KH1 Wakka says Tee-dus, but in KH2 Selphie says Tie-dus).

And anyway, pronunciation completely depends on dialects since a southerner will say many names different from a someone with a Boston accent. Or for instance were certain letters/sounds might be different or altogether missing (my name sounds far differnent in the US than it does in say Italy).

For some reason I always called Bahamut "Bah-haa-mooth", then I realized there was no h at the end...
We don't really know how to say Tidus name but I shall always call him Tie-Dus ^_^
I think it's because of the fact that Tidus loves Blitzball. He loves water and therefore the name Tidus comes from the word tide. (We don't say teeh-deh, now do we?)
I really don't know how to pronounce Ixion's name. I think it's Eek-See-On. Ifrit as Eeh-Frit. Zidane as Zee-Dane....

I've always said Tie-Dus, simply because it sounds a whole lot better than Tee-Dus. As for Bahumut, I've always pronounced it Bah-ha-mut, as opposed to Ba-ha-moot. *shrugs*

I pronounce Quistis just as it looks, Kwist-us. I never really thought about it before, but I guess Kee-stus is the correct way to say it. Same with Zidane, I always say Zi-dane, as opposed to Zee-dane.

Well, er, now I know that Quistis isn't "Kwi-stis."

Man, you learn so much posting your mistakes on the forums. =P

As for Tidus, I always still caim him TIEdus, but I don't remember where I learned the "real" pronounciation. I heard it in KH1, but there was somewhere else too.
...Probably Wikipedia. Which makes my statement inadequate.

As for Cait Sith- I've always been confused. I think the developers don't know how to pronounce it either, because they avoid saying his name at all costs in both Advent Children AND Dirge of Cereberus.

He usually just says "my little friend" or something to that extent.

Haha, though, "Butz" will always be pronounced how it's spelled. =P

I've always pronounced Tidus as Tie-dus, it sounds a hell of a lot better than Tee-dus. I pronounce Quistis as Kwist-us, again I think it sounds better than Kee-stus and I pronounce Zidane as Zi-dane as opposed to Zee-dane because yet again I think Zi-dane sounds better.

There are a few character which I think I pronounce wrong such as:
Rinoa, which I pronounce as Ree-no-ah
Quina, which I pronounce as Queen-ah

Eiko, which I pronounce as aye-ko

Rinoa reminds me of a RhIno...so I called her Ri-no-ah

As for Ixion...I pronounced it as "I-X-She-On" Is that weird? =O.

Actually, aren't those the correct prounciation?

I guess different people would have a different way to pronounce the names. Square Enix really should come up with the dictionary-style of explaining the correct pronounciation, now that i think of it.

Yeah that would avoid some confusion, however that would force me to admit that I should be saying Teedus ect.. (I'm sorry but I fukkin hate that pronounciation)

Besides, I kinda found it a little interesting pronouncing the names in my own way. But oh well, for the more recent titles we won't need to wonder if we're pronouncing it correctly now that FF's have voice acting.

I'm sorry but whenever I hear "Tie-das" I think "Tight ass." Therefor it's Tidus for me. I usually slur it, so it ends up sounding more like "Teeduz." Sounds a bit better than "Tee Duss." The Japanese pronounce it Teedaa or something, which just sounds weird to me.

I remember when my friend first played FF9, she thought the Iifa tree was spelled with a lower case "L". I seriosuly wanted to smack her everytime she said "Lifa Tree." It was so awkward to hear. OMG she also pronounces Celes as "Seals"!!! My god. :gasp: English IS her first language, btw.

Zidane for me is Zi-Dane - as in zit (pimple), and great dane (the dog). Makes him different from Zizou. Cyan, like the colour. Cait Sith, Kate Sith (like in Star Wars). Quistis = Kwistis. Bahamut, Bawhaw-moot.

It will always be Aeris to me, even though it's "wrong." Aerith just sounds lispy IMO.

What's always given me trouble is Quetzacoatl.
