Does anybody know if the Damage Overflow is counted by number of enemies killed total, or number of enemies killed with Vincent, or number of enemies killed with the Death Penalty? I'm asking because late game I'm considering going for it.

I believe it is calculated by the number of enemies killed with the Death Penalty but I'm not positive on that. As far as I know the Damage Overflow is also reliant on enemy defense which is why I'm thinking that the higher the power of the weapon (based on kills) the better the chances of killing such enemies with Overflow.

I'm not 100% on this either but I thought its power was boosted every time Vincent kills an enemy with the Death Penalty.

I haven't experienced this myself in so long, however, so it is not impossible that it could just be the number of kills Vincent has under his belt in general. I think we can rule out the number of enemies killed by the party in general though. I think it definitely is based on Vincent's kills.

I did indeed accomplish the grind to get Vincent's Damage Overflow Glitch without mods or cheats.
It took me probably an additional 200 - 300 hours of gameplay to do and I do agree with whoever told me not to do it that there's no practical reason to other than to say that you've done it.

The basics on how to do it is:
Kill EVERYTHING with Vincent as soon as you get him to help count towards his total kill count.
It doesn't matter HOW Vincent kills them, rather it's magic, command, summon materia or even just physical attacks, it all adds up into the same total kill count pool for Death Penalty later.

To make time efficient use of this, Morph + All or MegaAll when you're down in the Sunken Gelnika grinding for Stat Maxing items for the party will also count. It seriously is going to take that long so, might as well. REMEMBER to Max Luck Stats on the party LAST, particularly for Yuffie and Vincent. This will also see you going to the Battle Square over at the Gold Saucer to finish up for some of the items and some use of the W-Item Duplication Glitch is also a great time saver in the Gelnika and in the Battle Square when the time comes.

You can also toss in the Materia Overlord Achievement AND Barret's Damage Overflow Glitch grinds by going to the Northern Crater and whipping up on Magic Pots and Movers while doing this. Again, it all counts towards the total kill count for Vincent provided he gets the killing blow, whatever that killing blow may be.

Your Party in the Northern Crater for the AP Grind should thus be: Cloud, Cid, and Vincent. Cloud with Apocalypse and a Rune Armlet, Cid with Scimitar and a Rune Armlet for Cid, and Vincent with Death Penalty and a Rune Armlet OR a Wizard Bracelet, whichever. works for you. If you wanna grind All Materia to sell off, tack that on as well.

After all that, Slap Death Penalty and a Wizard Bracelet on Vincent.
Kill off the other two party members, who they are at this point doesn't matter, so that only Vincent is alive in the party.

Give a Now-Stat-Maxed Vincent a Speed Plus Materia, a MegaAll Materia, 3 Enemy Lure Materia (make sure Vincent is in the right spot in the menu screen due to a glitch which affects either Enemy Lure or Enemy Away materia, I can't rightly remember which), a W-Item Materia, HP Plus Materia, MP Plus Materia. --8 materia total.

For the additional 8 materia, give him Sneak Attack linked with Deathblow X3 over, so that should be 6 of the materia, and the last 3 slots are, up to you, really, but Final Attack + Life helps just in case, because you WILL zombie-out while doing this ridiculous grind, guaranteed. This way, you don't really have to think as much while doing this. Leaving you with 1 materia slot to do whatever with. IDK, a Gil Plus? Since the rewards here are pretty fruitless otherwise.

Anyway, head over to the Fort Condor side of the Mythril Mine and enter through the exit there. You know, OPPOSITE side of the Midgar Zolom side.

There's a Northern back room in there that dead ends into nowhere. It's just a cavern with nothing in it. You'll want to grind in here as enemies show up in pairs of 4 and 5 here.

Run around, get into a battle, Vincent will Sneak Attack, and start killing everything in Bulk.
In the event that he doesn't, that's what you've got a MeaAll for, in which case you can either Morph or Deathblow everything in the fight.

The more you kill, the higher his damage will climb, the beginning will definitely suck, but eventually you'll get to where you're 1-shotting everything in bulk in the room with him. Which is ideal, and with Sneak Attack. I've also heard of people doing Sneak Attack + Slash All for the Flash factor, that works too, whatever floats your Goat (yes, Goat).

The reason you're doing it this way is because Vincent has to get to 255 Kills.
And each battle will yield 4 or 5 kills. So yes, this WILL take what feels like forever to do, even if you are doing it efficiently. It's why not many people have really done it.

To give you an example of how long that takes to do, Cloud is in the party MOST of the game, and even by the time you get to Disc 3 Part 3, even AFTER all this grinding with Vincent, he'll be at like around 100-ish, 167 for me.

As far as keeping track of how many kills Vincent gets, there are two ways to do it, one is the oldschool way only a madman would do, the other is more practical.

The oldschool way is to actually make tally marks on what will eventually be a small book of blank paper with tally marks. I do not recommend this at all, but there ARE some people who WILL do it that way.

The other way, which is more practical, is to just use the Black Chocobo Editor ONLY FOR opening the Save File to look at Vincent's kill count. --Which is just more practical. Which is what I did. So you DON'T have to think about it or keep track of tally marks.

If you work a standard 20 - 40 hour a week job, and you're aimlessly grinding, you're gonna run across some things if you're older, say probably in the 28+ age range. --And this is the main reason I suggest don't do the tally mark thing.

You're gonna fall asleep playing, you're gonna lose count, you're gonna have to stop gaming and go to work, etc. and it'll probably take you an estimated 2 years to do if you're approaching this practically as a normal, working class person casually grinding on this.

If that sounds like a grind that is longer than the entirety of the Tony Hawks Pro Skater franchise, that's probably because it is.

Anyway, that's the how and the why.

Most people fall off of this grind, I'm not going to lie about it, entirely due to the mental health factor. It will break you. I don't like it, I will NEVER do this grind again, I DON'T recommend doing it due to the mental health factor, I SHOULD have listened to the guy who told me NOT to do it, but as a testament to being a completionist to my favorite game of all time I forced myself through it.

Common Questions And Answers:

What did you do? How did you keep yourself focused while grinding?

The answer to this is: I kind of didn't after a certain point. Which actually came about 1/4th of the way through it.

What I ended up doing was listening to basically every review of the game AND all of the Abridged series of the came on YouTube that I could find WHILE doing the grind (I muted the game at one point just due to the sound effects getting monotonous), and flipped through a couple of podcasts I listen to all the while. I did fall asleep sometimes playing, I did lose count, all that like I said is normal. It just happens. You can estimate differences by factoring that out later if you're looking for a time-efficient way to do this if you're doing it casually AROUND your work schedule and daily responsibilities like I did.

This Materia Combination Doesn't Work.

Oops. Sorry. It's been a while for me. Like I said, I took a couple years off and away after this to deal with some stuff. This was also something I was working on prior to and into the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak circa 2020 - 2021. At that time I was also an Assistant Manager in a Retail Store so, my personal life was VERY busy and chaotic. I apologize for any inconsistencies on behalf of the fact that while this grind was a personal challenge, it was also sort of a stack of a personal challenge on top of other personal challenges. Finding the materia combinations that DO work really shouldn't be that hard though, considering the amount of time that it takes to do in the first place one SHOULD be able to easily master multiple materia several times over. Do some of your own research if I'm off here, it IS the most covered JRPG in the entire genre so it shouldn't be terribly difficult to figure out.

Isn't Barret's Damage Overflow Glitch More Practical?

Yes, absolutely. The catch with it being is that it is at the cost of his entire Materia slot availability on Missing Score. Limiting his Materia Capacity to only 8 if you have a Wizard Bracelet on him.

Vincent's Damage Overflow Glitch is in-house, specifically to his weapon, Death Penalty. No materia on it is necessary which gives him the additional 8 materia slots on his weapon for free reign to the player. Although admittedly, once you're 1-shotting everything after doing all of this? It, kind of doesn't matter what materia you have on him. Unless you're going against The Big Bosses in the game (Emerald, Ruby, Jenovah DEATH, Bizarro and Safer Sephiroth). I really shouldn't even include Jenovah DEATH in that, considering she's basically a pushover, but the game doesn't give you an option around her.

Why do this?

It was a personal challenge I issued to myself, not realizing the depth of how challenging it really actually is. I cannot stress enough that I now understand why people fall off of trying to do this.

The only benefit being that between the Death Penalty Damage Overflow Glitch for Vincent, and the Vincent Mug Glitch, I can run without mods or cheats a run against Emerald Weapon, Ruby Weapon, Jenovah Death, Bizarro Sephiroth, AND Safer Sephiroth, in the roundabouts of an hour and some few minutes in IRL time.

For those of us who play more turn-based style games, having only an hour to game really isn't much time. So if I need to kill an hour, okay, I'll load up and go do this. Boom. Hour is killed. Along with a bunch of dead bosses that I soloed and wiped the floor with.

So how long in total did your completionist run of the game take, both in game time and in IRL time?

Game Time: about 533 Hours, including the additional 200 - 300 hours just to do this grind.

IRL Time: Actually, probably closer to like 3 - 5 years of just casually playing. There's definitely points where I got bored, put the game down, went and played other games, came back, etc. I do casual gaming, not professional gaming, gaming is my therapeutic hobby, not my profession. In truth if I sat down I could probably do a speed run of the game but, eh, the completionist in me isn't really interested in stuff like that.

What were your personal standards for your completion run?

All Steam Achievements in 1 playthrough of the game.
99 of every item in the game, excluding weapons and armor because I was already setting out to do this grind so I wasn't going to run around for forever in Midgar buying 99 Iron Bangles. So I cut it back to 3 - 9 on such kinds of items for myself. One for every party member. And YES, I did and do condone using the W-Item Duplication Glitch. It's a funny, quirky mechanic of the game and I can't take this game too seriously --not to THAT level at least.

Serious enough to do a breaking grind, but not so serious to be like "no glitches on a completionist run." Nah. This grind IMO is punishing enough for a casual gamer like myself.

1 of every weapon for every character including ultimate weapons.
1 of every armor for every character (at least 1, that is).

All Limit Breaks.
All Fort Condor Battles.
Max stats for all characters.
All materia Mastered and a Master Magic, Master Command, and Master Summon materia for each of the 3 party members in combat.
Mastering Underwater wasn't really on the list but, considering the grind, I ended up doing so anyway. *shrug*

Even in doing this, I still TECHNICALLY failed my own completionist run.
I missed 4 items. Though, I don't NEED them. And no, I'm NOT going to do all of this all over again JUST for 4 items. The 3 I can remember were:

Curse Ring - Stolen from Ultima Weapon.
- I missed t his because at the time I was like: Tifa's already at Level 99, and I'm doing Barret and Vincent here, otherwise I have no use for this. And I actually totally forgot about it.

Rising Sun - Stolen from Diamond Weapon.
- Okay, THIS ONE is the one I actually hated missing the most. It could have actually been useful, but again, not really necessary for my use. Other than it killed my technical completionist challenge for weapons. But I mean, whatever.

Earth Mallet - Stolen from Gigas.
- Again, like with Diamond, I just forgot to get this. I admittedly MOSTLY hate pretty much all of Disc 2/Part 2 of the game and I sort of screwed this up coming out of that part of the game trying to get to the end of the actual game where there's time to do other things.

And I can't remember the name of the last item but it's also otherwise insignificant to my uses but it's something you get out of the Gi Cave.

So didn't you technically fail at your completionist run, then?

Well, yes, technically I did...but for that matter, so did Siddhartha Gautama, better known to modern people as the historical Buddha, who was, IMO, one of the smartest men to ever walk across the surface of this planet. And that failure, is actually what lead to his Enlightenment Experience for which he is so famous for in the first place.

Have you considered/would you write a guide for the game?

I've thought about it many times, but ultimately decided against doing so.
It's literally the most covered JRPG in the entire genre. There's no need for me to. People have already pulled this game apart and put it back together down to the very fabric of the coding itself which is the why and how mods are available for it. And I am no programmer. I don't understand technical jargon like coding language and 3D GFX rendering beyond the basics of how it works. That's just not my wheelhouse. Plus, countless guides already exist. I would have nothing new to add to it whatsoever. The MOST that I could do, would be to try to compile a time-efficient guide for a completionist run of the game...but then there are different versions of the game which exist, which does indeed factor into things like the Fort Condor Mini-Game and some technical aspects that I, see all that and I'm like: Nah, people can figure this out on their own.

Why write out this long post then?

I needed to kill a couple hours. Writing a guide would take HUNDREDS of hours. Lol. There's a big difference there.

Will you ever replay the game start to finish on a run again?

Probably. But this time when I do it, I MIGHT get into certain mods. That would be the entire reason I would do it. For updated graphics and perhaps for the voice acting mod. But that would most likely be the main mods used.

While I DO appreciate challenge mods, I, am burned out on this game for quite a while.
This last run was kind of meant to be my be-all-end-all run for it.
Back in the day, on PSX and early into PS2 times when I was in my early teens (I'm 36 years old, yes, I'm an old man, older than Cid, and TECHNICALLY older than Auron in FFX), I ran through this game AT LEAST 3 times on completionist runs. All 3 times I forgot to double back from Cosmo Canyon with Red XII/Nanaki to do...something?? I can't remember what specifically now, but I DO KNOW that every time that's what tripped me up. Something to do with Fort Condor, I think.

A 4th run was made later after I learned about the Counter + Mime combo and I wanted to loop limit breaks against Emerald and Ruby Weapon. I remember this specifically because I was like 16 at the time and saw some Japanese gamer do it. Death Unites Us over at 4_8 Productions must've seen it too and perhaps around the same time. Anyway, I ran through the game a 4th time, just to do this.

I wanted to hit Emerald Weapon as many times as possible, so I mimed Cid's Highwind on a loop against Emerald. My friend was over watching me and he was like: "This is gonna take a while, let's go make a Wal-Mart run for a cube of Mountain Dew and some French Onion Sun Chips." -- So we left, came back, and the animation WAS STILL RUNNING. Lol. It thankfully finished up shortly after. My friend smirked and his catchphrase at that time was "you're a terrible person." Lmao. Obviously he wasn't being serious in saying this, we 90s kids just have that natural sarcastic humor to us because we grew up on Rocko's Modern Life and Daria.

A 5th run of the game was attempted, but failed and concluded due to the amount of work I was doing at my old job at the time.

So this is probably my 6th, if not 7th run to my memory. Can't totally recall. Memory is getting fuzzy in my age. Feel like the Chocobo Sage. Lol.

Anyway, that's it for my really, really long post.

Time to mosey.
