I have been questioning this for awhile, and I never believed he ever did, I knew that he had sons, which also got me thinking...who did he mate with also? Lastly, how did he come to be? I want your guys opinions on how all this could make sense.

Please note that your title indicates spoilers from the game. Avoid doing this as those who haven't played the game will be spoiled unnecessarily.

FFIX spoilers

The last speech in the game is in fact made by Vivi, and he's saying goodbye to his friends in the message. It may not be so obvious in the English version, but according to wiki, in the Japanese version, the speech has structures and language style used by Vivi only.

So yes. He did stop at the end of the game.

Wiki also said that he was created in Dali like the rest of the black mages. But he escaped and then was adopted by a Qu (who became his grandfather). He's probably an earlier version of black mage made by Kuja such that he has a greater degree of free will and longer lifespan. Kuja probably realised that this was a mistake, and created less sentient black mages after that.

It's unknown how Vivi had sons because the mist is gone and black mages can no longer be produced artificially. He probably met another black mage and 'mated' with her. But this is just speculation.

I rather believe that the presence of sons was a symbolic representation of the continuity of life, rather than something necessarily canon.

Yeah, I completely forgot about that, it has been 6months since I have been on here, :-/, and Cid, between the time I posted this until I replied to this, I figured out the truth...poor Vivi...

It's a shame that it had to come to that. However, I feel that Vivi is a respected and appreciated part of the quest that those characters endured and his efforts were surely not in vain :)

Vivi's "death letter" was probably the most poignant scenes in the game - enforcing one of the themes of the game being that you are ultimately unable to escape your fate/destiny. Like Kuja, he was destined to die, but instead of fighting it like Kuja did, he accepted it and made the most of his life while he still existed. A strong move to make for such a beloved character, but that was back when Square had some storytelling sense, and weren't making entire crappy sequels to bring characters back to life.

It certainly was a shame that it came to that in the end, but it sort of had to end like that, but it was sad.

Love the dig at X-2 :) though I was glad they made that sequel.

Xx..xX

Maybe Vivi and Quina ended up doing it afterall....

Savage thought there :gasp:

I always thought he was a prototype, perhaps even meant to be a Black Waltz, that managed to escape or misplaced and was soon found by a Qu whom raised him with the intent of fatting him up and eating him (Make a visit to the Qu's Cave and read whats to be found :gasp: !).

Oh my. I always thought Quan meant Vivi couldn't eat because he was too small. Did he mean that HE wanted to eat Vivi?!

I'm afraid yes lol. But I'm quite sure Quan grew affectionate towards Vivi as time passes by.

I actually didn't know when I beat the game the first time all those years ago that it was Vivi's words in the end. I was so crushed when I found T.T

As for his "sons", I always thought they were created through a different means than mist to be honest. Don't know what exactly, but maybe the genomes had a helping hand? They were living with the Black Mages by the end of the game, right?

Wait a minute...

He dies? This always happen to me! I have a character that I really, really like and they die. I liked Aerith in Final Fantasy VII and what happens? The girl's ran through with a sword from behind. I like Vivi here and what happens? He dies man! I just need to stop liking characters. They're all dropping like flies man! FLIES!

*ahem* Okay I'm good now.

Boy, Vivi's death letter had me crying my eyes out during my first playthrough. It sucks that he stopped. I guess we couldn't get a completely happy ending. My favorite character of the bunch was the sacrifice. :(

I like to believe that Vivi and Quina did actually.... Uh.... Do it, so that Vivi had kids. Seems unlikely I know but damn it.

Vivi's legacy will live on through his many kids.
