Hey guys, pretty simple question. I know nothing about ff13 whatsoever. Like nothing. But 13-2 looks pretty fun so I'm wondering if I can pick up what is goin on in 13-2 if I pick it up now.
Whilst it's not crucial to the story of XIII-2, you might not appreciate their discussions about the events in XIII as much. Furthermore, the story of XIII-2 is a bit lacking as a standalone; it really needs to be combined with XIII (and future DLC) to feel complete and complex.
If you don't play the game, at least look up the story and perhaps watch some videos. This may also help you appreciate the relationship between Snow and Serah and the dedication Serah and Lightning have to one another. You'll also learn about Hope's development from a boy to a young man. Some of the events in XIII do add to your understanding of the characters.
You're not obligated to, but it's a sequel and there are always relations between those two games. There is a lot of story behind things that you wouldn't have known of if you didn't play the game or researched some info. However, it will still be enjoyable and it won't really "ruin" anything.
In my opinion, I think that XIII-2 is as high rated as it was because of XIII. You really need to experience the disappointment with XIII before the sequel if you know what I mean. Mean, but sadly true. They were really trying to redeem themselves because they admitted that they were only focusing on graphics. Since they have the character/world models, they could finally put the story in tact which was a big mistake for the company in the first place.
I'd suggest playing it first. You probably won't appreciate the improvements in XIII-2 as much if you don't play XIII. Plus, if you go in with an open mind, XIII isn't all that bad of a game as people make it out to be. It's an oddball, but it's enjoyable.
Playing it first is a sensible choice, but don't expect it to be exactly like XIII-2 since they changed most of the things players complained about, if not all. However when you load up XIII-2 there is a Beginner's Primer at the main menu which gives you an overview of XIII chapter by chapter.
Personally I'd recommend playing it first, though most people would probably disagree since it's an awful game and all that jazz.
It might not be a bad idea. The main story line of the game is fairly brief and if you take advantage of upgrading weapons at appropriate times and exploiting good grinding spots along the way, you'll be able to complete it in a few days to a week depending on the time you’re willing to put in.
So I think you should play it first simply because you can complete the story fairly easily and quickly, and then you will enjoy XIII-2 much better.
[FONT="]However if you want to go for full completion of all 5 or 6 things at the most that XIII has to offer, be prepared for an extremely drawn out game. You'll get to the stage where simply getting off a chocobo takes too long....
I actually started skipping the cut scene for getting off of chocobos because it saved me about 0.5 seconds....thats how drawn out the post game is....

I just brought home XIII-2 today and am about to fire it up for the first time and I didn't play XIII either. I haven't even played a FF title in so long. I am very siked about getting back into the series!
would seem like a good idea to complete the first one before moving on to the continuation. If your smart you would just search the internet for main story plots and clips to save time if you cant bother playing through the game.
Honestly, as bad as FF13 was I would just suggest renting it or reading a summarized version of the story if you really need to play it to make it's sequel make any sense.
I am personally not a fan of either of the games, but FF13 featured a lot of really ridiculous long fights that were meaninglessly drawn out. If that doesn't bother you, then there should be no reason not to play it, but I doubt that you will have to have played both games for the sequel's story to make sense
except maybe with serahxsnow. i was wondering when snow was going to get B& for sexing little girls
