For those of us who have been around for awhile, do you still enjoy Final Fantasy?

I am very "meh" towards the series now. I'm not excited for any of the sequels or for any new numbered titles. When XV comes out, I don't know if I'll even bother.

About a month ago, my husband was replaying IX and I sat and watched. I couldn't really get excited watching and became bored quickly. It was a little depressing because that was one of my favorite FF titles. A few weeks ago I found a track from VI and I wasn't even the least bit excited.

Though I will admit, IV is still one of my favorite games of all time.

Yes and no. I'm sorry to not answer your question at all, but it's genuinely how I feel about it now.

There are days where I'll be listening to some music, and a FF soundtrack will come on, sparking a nostalgic overload. I'll think about it for hours, get myself pumped to get stuck into some form of FF action, and then when I get home all that enthusiasm vanishes. I'm not sure why, because I know what my favourites are and I stick to them. However, I do think that the small, naive child in me is secretly thinking, "let's just pretend that this a new FF game that I have no clue about." At least this way I won't inevitably be disappointed like I usually am by the modern day FF tripe that we're now forced to swallow.

That's just my opinion, and I know that other people actually love the current string of FF's that are on offer. I really am pleased for these people because I know how it feels to become immersed in one of these games; there's nothing like it. Unfortunately I just can't enjoy them any more. The magic has gone, and I don't think it's due to come back at any time soon.

I think the name itself creates such expectation that it's almost inevitably a disappointment. When I was younger I didn't really read reviews or watch trailers or anything like that so when I got a new game it was completely fresh without any bias or preconception on my part. The last Final Fantasy game I played with this mindset was FFX (which I love). From then on I anticipated the games more and found myself preparing for the 'next installment,' of which I am always disappointed (X-2 onwards).

An example of this expectation/pre-conception to me would be XII. As an RPG it's great. As a game in general it's great, but as a Final Fantasy title it's certainly lacking. It's got to a point where I don't know if it's my own fault that I'm disappointed by these new installments or if they truly do seem to be sucking more and more.

To answer your question directly I'd say no. I don't like the Final Fantasies from X-2 onwards as 'Final Fantasies' which in itself puts the blame on me because of my personal expectations, but I still adore the old school Final Fantasies especially from IV - X :)

Honestly?? No. I definitely don't like it as much as I originally used to. Many of the character models annoy and irritate me now. The newer installments are sub-par in both gameplay and personality. The older games aren't as much of a highlight as they once were.

I'm very cynical about the series in general.

That being said, I still think the series could pull it back with a decent game installment to the MAIN series- not a spinoff.

Also, the music is something I could never hate on.

It's lost its charm as the years have gone by. It's helped that I'm pretty much apathetic towards video games most of the time anyway. I don't think I can tolerate sitting there to watch someone play. You just don't watch people play JRPGs because it's only the person playing it that will get any of the fun in doing so. Why would I want to watch someone fight a hundred battles to grind in the middle of a dungeon most of the time anyway? And I can't see myself having the will to revisit any of the games anytime too soon because I can't think of a single reason why I would want to anymore, except if it's a FFXII HD release with all the mod-cons that Japan received in its International version. Replaying games is rarely what I bother doing anyway, especially if they're a JRPG.

So yeah, in short, I really don't care about it anymore. The charm, the lustre and the sense of wonderment has gone. It's replaced with the knowledge that a poorly-managed Japanese corporation has categorically lost its way, as well as much of that same passion that had gone into earlier games, leaving behind either absolute stinkers or something bereft of much soul or anything remarkable when compared to superior competition. The more irrelevant the franchise is getting for me, the closer it is to being tossed completely into the dustbins of history. I will be absolutely surprised if they can pull themselves together for next-gen, if they still have the money and 10+ years to make even one next-gen game.

Of course i still like them. FF 7 8 9 10 will always be some of my favourite games ever ad nothing will change that. Granted i havent loved an FF game since 10, 12 was ok but every game on a major platform after that was just rubbish. That though doesnt change the way i think about 7,8,9,10. They have many good memories that will stick with me. Hopefully square can get it together and pull out a good title in the future. Fi9ngers crossed.

Yes I still love Final Fantasy. On the whole they are great and my favourite ever games are all FF titles. I still get excited about new titles, the only time I haven't are the online games or XIII-2 (because I disliked XIII). Even LR looks so good I can't help but be excited by it, despite the games behind it. So what if I didn't like XIII though? It's one game. One bad game does not a bad series make :)

Just like one poster above, my answer is both yes and no.

On the one hand, I still love all the titles that I used to. They're hardly on my playlist these days, naturally, but I'm fond of them just the same.

But how long can a franchise live off of its name? Off of past success? I've disagreed with their approach for years now, and in my eyes, they've been on a downward slope. The series has lost its edge, and as a whole, I no longer really care for it, nor do I hold it to the standard I once did. Maybe FF XVIII will turn that around.

I still like the old Final Fantasy Games like 7 (kinda), 9 and 10. I also really love 12, it's not an oldie but I think it was the last good FF game.
I really do not like where final fantasy is going. I can't see myself really enjoying another final fantasy game in the future if they keep going in the direction they are...Square need to get their but into gear if they want fans to stay loyal because they're really putting the majority of us off the games :(

I'm not that fussed about versus like some people but in the back of my heart I really do wish and hope that it brings the series back on track.

I think this is the point that concerns me. Square have had ample opportunity to get everything in order, but haven't done so. In all honestly, are they even showing signs of doing so? I don't think so. Personally, I think they are fully aware of how loyal their fans are and as a result have taken their foot off the gas. Let's face it, the community FF games has is pretty large and I find it hard to believe that Square can't read what their fans write. This leaves only one conclusion for me, and that is as long as they know how much we pine for a "classic FF" (i.e. VII, VIII, IX) they will continue to produce title's that are barely associated with the FF brand. Why? Because they know that we will keep coming back, just because we know how good it could be again and don't want to miss out on another piece of FF gold.

the problem is that i continue to see potential in final fantasy, but now they make everyone second guess.

i'm honestly thinking final fantasy XIV's PR was based on how it sucked initially and now their reworking it.

Final Fantasy XIII is the only thing SE wants to focus on, and it's ridiculous. At least when Final Fantasy XII and people hated it (not including me) there were other final fantasy games to look forward to.

right now, i dont like them, but my mind can change once the fabula nova crystallis project is over.

I've been playing Final Fantasy for 20 years, and it's still my favorite series. I'm like a lot of you--it's mostly because I love the older installments so much. Am I happy with where SE has taken the series? Not necessarily, but mostly because of the two online games (what a waste of a FF title!).

As far as XIII and its sequels go, I think many people were disappointed because they strayed so far from the original formula. As for me, I welcomed the change, and I like how the series has evolved over time. Can you imagine 14 identical games with nothing different but the storyline? Take FFVII for example. In many ways it was so drastically different from its predecessors--and it was a good thing!

So, yeah. I still like the series, even if it's not what it used to be.

I've always enjoyed playing FF games and am looking forward to future installments. I've never been one to let others' opinions of a game determine whether or not it would be worth my while, nor do I hold strong opinions about Square Enix. I suppose I've avoided the general attitude towards this franchise that has taken root in the last five years or so.

I still do, though not to the same extent as I used to. I need a new FF game to evoke the same attachment I felt playing FF 6,7,8,9,10.

I still like it but not to the extent of like that I have playing the past titles. I agree with Shina Spy. The online games was such a waste for a main title. The could have simply named it "Final Fantasy Online" just like "Imagine" to "Shin Megami Tensei".

I think what Square-Enix figures is that if people aren't impressed with this new evolution of Final Fantasy, they have a dozen past titles to re-play and enjoy. The sticky situation with them is that traditional FF's just aren't going to make the cut like they used to. Turn-based strategy is taking a nosedive.
For example, Lost Odyssey was a great RPG, but didn't get very high marks because it was traditionally turn-based. People are starting to want more action to go along with strategy, and that is what SE is trying to fulfill.
I feel that they are tinkering with their ideas. The FFXIII series is more or less of a prototype for what they are trying to accomplish. Next-gen RPG's is a very tricky path, so we can expect a lot of trial and error for a while in the genre in general.

Well considering I started playing them about a year and a half ago, I still really like them, and look forward to new releases. I'll always love FFIX and I consider it to be the greatest video game ever. So yeah. I'm still very much into it.

As it sits now? No, hell no. Final Fantasy for me in North America stopped living after 2us for the SNES. I was able to purchase FFV for the SFC and played it back in the day but other than that everything after 2us in North America stunk for the main series. Overall I absolutely wasn't impressed with FF3us (FF6). I could literally do without the ones after FFV for the rest of my life and not miss a beat.

God I hope you're wrong. :( Old gamers like myself that are old fashioned will pretty much stop buying and playing new games if they/we haven't. Last new console game I bought at full price? FF12 Collector's Edition which I'm still playing. Meh, this and the other topic are depressing. Time to go cheer myself up by reading some old gaming stuff from the 80's and early 90's.

I'm still very much loving Final Fantasy. I'm just waiting for another good game! There's no reason, in my opinion, to disown a series because of a few bad games! If anything, the bad ones are what make the good ones look SO much better too! I'm looking forward to Final Fantasy XV (Which I'm almost positive they WILL make) because I'm looking forward to something new!
