For those who have been keeping up with this game in its current state, it's a contentless shamble. The game itself isn't terrible now since the User Interface fixes in November along with now this month giving people the ability to customise the controls to each button you like on your keyboard / controller pad, it is the fact there is a sheer lack of content outside of crafting and levequesting. That is why the director was sacked this week who was in charge of FFXIV (Tanaka) and they have revamped the team, they have cancelled the March release for PS3 and for now it will be a free to play game until the new team have implemented everything they want to this game. The game being released on PS3 will given it a chance at a second impression, so I wouldn't consider it a dead game yet.

SE want this game to work out, FFXI was their highest grossing game out of all the FF series (due to the monthly fees and add on expansions), the bigwigs at SE will want to make money from XIV in a long term basis. The game certainly has the music and graphics to be successful, with a general direction which hopefully the new team gives them the game will work out. Buy the game now for PC if you want, you can expect to play this game for the next four months for free at least, could be even more than that.

I havent played it yet and have been kind of put off by the reviews.. but my laptop cant handle it anyway. I played FFXI since its European release, so people who have played it should know from experience that it took SE 3 years after the EU release to make the game worth the hours spent in it anyway...

Anyone who experienced the runs to the Dunes as a level 18 WAR back in the days when enemies followed you no matter how long you ran, to die 5 times before making it across the zones and into the safety of a loading screen only to drop dead when it loads because you stand still for 5 seconds will know what I mean...

Right now they are revamping Final Fantasy XIV completely for the PS3 version to further improve the mistakes and errors that were on the PC system. They even sent out an apology to the one's who bought it for the PC.

I am HOPING it will not be an epic fail at all and they'll get it right. I really am looking forward to the PS3 copy of XIV and they need to get it together and do it right. Take your time, do it slow, Square!

Honestly, I think that it's silly for them to try and repair the game. Maybe they will make it better, but from a business standpoint, they're only digging a hole for themselves; they had their chance to gain a following when they released it, but their drive to beat WoW Cataclysm to the market backfired on them and now the game is nothing short of infamous among the MMO community.

It's going to be too hard to compete with WoW, Rift, and DC Universe Online, and upcoming stuff like Star Wars: The Old Republic and Guild Wars 2 are only going to hammer the nails in to the game's coffin (Not to mention FFXI's lingering fanbase isn't doing them any good, and this is a historically notorious factor in the downfall of new MMOs; it's precisely the reason Everquest II was not as successful as the first). If they would've waited--took the hit from Cataclysm, and polish up their game--their game would've been better recieved and hold a more favorable public image, but it's too late, now.

It would be better for them to let the game die and forget that it ever happened. Leave it to the garbage bin of gaming history, among the likes of the CD-i Zelda games and Superman 64, never to speak of it again.

This new team that they got to work on the game is really starting to turn things around. The main problem of the game right now I would say is that it's a technically sound system/game but right now it's just a matter of adding more content. They threw in a new high level dungeon amongst numerous system changes/class nerfs and buffs. And I hear they have even bigger changes in store for the game.

As an avid FFXI fan, I'm eager for the game to finally take off once the PS3 version is released and people can see what it's blossoming into.

I voted for the unsure vote because I thought that FFVI was a fail because my cousin played it years ago but found out from playing it myself, that the game was decent enough. We won't be too sure about XIV until we've played the full version for PS3. It's different to play it on PC than an actual system. I learnt that while playing XI years ago. Some are good and some are bad. But since I've always been a FF fan, I'll get this anyway and hope to like it. (Which I mos likely will seeing as how it's a FF game and none disapointed me so far).

I am currently being pushed and prodded by friend to give this game a try. Recently they have made a lot of changes to the game and the current player base seem to be very happy with the results. I do not think this game will die. I do not see this game becoming something that carries on or lifts the final fantasy name higher but I do see it surviving. Also there is about a million horrible free to play mmos out there that have tons of players. My prediction is that this game goes ftp/micro transaction because at this point if they start charging monthly fees I do not think they will gain more players at any sort of rate to become profitable.

Keep in the mind the UI is still one of the bigger works in progress, but it is manageable. The game has a good chunk of content now, it has hard fights. Chocobo travel is top notch, following roughly a 6 hour long quest-line to attain them. (it also dual purposes as the quest-line to join a Grand Company)
Servers have been growing over the last 3 months substantially. I'm sure pay-to-play will knock off some of that, but I will be fully supporting the Version 2.0 launch with my cash. The game feels like Final Fantasy to me at this point.

Also I think it will be very unique to experience the end of the world based on the small touches they have already put in the game, such as GMs that talk about the coming of the 7th Era, random empire invasions, mysterious GMs that speak of doom, etc. This one-time content is rather appealing. If you miss it, you miss it forever, as it won't be in Version 2.0 since the 7th Era will have presumably arrived upon it's release.

"Hmmm... I really don't know. It's a possibility..."

Because the mmorpg scene is stagnating with the coming of Guild Wars 2, TERA, Blade and Soul
The old slow"F1,F2,F3" format will be erased by the new Action RPG format and i honestly dont know if FFXIV can keep up with that
But! i genuinely hope they do because back when i played FFXI it was a awesome mmorpg with an awesome community.
