Do any of you make it a habit to watch the news? Or, do you avoid it for whatever reason?

I know a lot of people who no longer watch the news because it's too depressing, or they just don't care for it. As for me, I like to watch the news at least once a day, as I like to stay informed as to what's happening in the world, even if I dislike the blatant political bias towards Labour that the BBC have, and it is saddening how depressing it can be sometimes, but I make a point of watching it at least once a day >_>

So, what about you? Do you watch the news?

I don't really watch the news. xD
It's not that I find it depressing, but sometimes I could find it scary. Just a little bit.

In the mornings I usually leave the news on as I make breakfast and everything, then every now and then they announce a story that catches my attention. and THEN I get into the news. xD

I always watch the news, no matter how depressing it is. I make a habit of reading the paper on the bus in the mornings, and although it severely depresses me, I take pride in the knowledge that at least I'm not ignorant enough to ignore the sufferings of our world. I don't often have the chance to watch the news, as I don't really watch t.v. that much, but I try to find news online and in the newspaper. Really, I feel like not reading the news at all when celebrity gossip columns get as much space as death obituaries. It's disheartening how it appears the only types of news are topics of grave matters or mindless dribble about celebrities. Alas, my thirst for knowledge is not quenched until I know.

I don't make it a habit to watch the news, but I don't ignore it. The news doesn't really depress me or scare me so I don't avoid it all together. I watch it about 3-4 times a week when there is nothing else on. But it doesn't bother me if I miss it for whatever reason.

I don't watch the news as I don't watch TV at all anymore. I do own a TV, but it's used only for gaming and watching DVD's and it's not hooked up to receive any kind of signals. I wouldn't watch the news even if I watched TV though. I find that the average news cast is much too superficial, packing a whole day's worth of news into 10-30 minutes, not really going into detail with any of them. So for my news coverage, I much prefer reading newspapers online.

That way I get detailed descriptions, expert opinions, and even video footage all in one. It also gives me time to absorb it all and I can make up my mind about whatever I'm reading. A luxury you don't really get when you watch the news on TV where you are just fed a 3 minute item before being fed the next one immediately after.

Yes i dont intend to watch it though it's always on TV so i just listen in to it while doing other things if it is about politics i change channel straight away though

Sometimes, don't watch it everyday because it can sometimes be really negative realism and heavy on subjects like murderer, war and death..

Sometimes would watch the news more if it had happier information and news on. It's cool to know what's happening around the word.
But sometimes would like to know who has saved a life, or managed to get through a really tough event in life, even somebody who is trying to stop a disease or a illness..

But sometimes just feel like the news is too dark, realism is dark but not always. But yeah sometimes watch the news. But always, always skip sport. Never been huge on sport...

I watch the local news usually at least once or twice a day (probably at about 5:00PM and then again at 10:00PM), depending. I like to watch it because I do enjoy staying up-to-date on what's happening locally. All of that murder, death, suicide, fires, war stuff doesn't really bother me too much, so that makes it a little easier.

Though I can't really stand the politically driven news stations, so I make a point not to watch those.

The BBC aren't biased - they along with the other terrestrial channels are bound by law to report the news without bias.

I watch the news quite a lot, but only because my parents watch it while I'm having my tea. I prefer to read the paper tbh.

I keep up to date on current affairs but im very particular about what news sources I read watch.

I will only read The Guardian newspaper, papers like The Sun, Mail, Telegraph and Express are xenophobic hate mongers. I despise news stations like FOX News as well. Channels and papers like this are great at getting people to hate each other, feel paranoid and swamping people with garbage like reality TV shows to divert from the real problems going on in this world.

It's grimdark out there and more people should be aware of how bad it can get instead of switching on America or Britains Got Talent.

do i watch the news is that a trick question

well it might be strange and u might here it off crazy people but i think the news feed us lies and false titles.
so they concentrate on the main story but they change it a bit so it actually turns out to be a lie
thats why i dont watch the news!
sometimes it can seem interesting and very into depth but that is actually what they want u to think and they want u to watch more and more and more
and in a way i think the goverment and the tabloids and the news station want us to live in fear.
also the only repetetive saying you hear off the news is CRIME ! MURDER! TEENAGE BOY KILLED ! AND THE BLOODY RECESSION
LOL

This is something that has always been an interest of mine as I am absolutely fascinated by the study of media. I won't go off on a tangent, but I think you kind of make a good point, dark blade, with your comment about the news being extremely biased. I can agree with this assumption to an extent; however, it all depends on your knowledge about the media and what tools you have at your disposal in order to deconstruct it and look at it from an educated standpoint.

I think making such a statement as 'the news is feeding us lies and false information' is not always applicable. It happens, yes. Sometimes on purpose and sometimes as a mistake, but there are also news programs that try to avoid having that happen. It really depends on what kind of news were talking about and should be determined on an individual, case-by-case situation.

Err, I'm kind of blabbering on here... >_> Lol, anyway, yeah, that's what I think.

I never watch the news.

I don't even watch T.V. at all. It doesn't interest me.

But when I did watch T.V at one stage, I never watched the news then either.

It's too depressing. They never seem to want to show anything that would cheer a person up. It's always something about someone getting shot or whatever.

They never fail to implement the latest dieting techniques and such in there every so often as well. How many dieting tips can one come up with???!!!

So yeah. Not for me. It's too depressing and boring in my opinion.

I watch is quite it a bit because I just like to know what's going on, like most people, mainly because it's always on when I'm having my dinner. Though if it's not even vaguely interesting I'll turn it over. The only time I don't really watch it is when it comes to politics because I honestly can't be bothered to listen to shite that comes out of most politician's mouths, especially David Cameron's who speaks it most.

Well, I watch the news in the morning on CNN, Robin Meade's show. But lets face the facts, when I watch it, I never actually know what happened when I shut it off. :wacky:

But in all reality, I don't watch the news. If I wanted to watch something with a lot of artificial drama, I'd watch a drama, not the news. Because of this, I steer clear of the news, I have better things to do then to waste my time watching the media do their best create drama.

The media having an opinion is highly unethical, and yet they have an opinion. The media has a little too much power, and it's blatantly obvious that they enjoy abusing it. The bias just so annoying. The whole point of the press is to report the news, not give their thoughts on it. The news just fails here in the US.

I'm in the U.S. where our news is the worst news. I turned my cable television off about 6 months ago. The news here is biased, it also exploits people and likes to be influenced by copious amounts of drama.

We have no world news. We have Micheal Jackson news, we have Lindsay Lohan news, we have Britney Spears news, and that is all. How can I best relay this to our general public. We are like horse with blinds over our eyes, we can't see the truth, because it is being derailed.

Now I do read articles and such, just too stay in touch with the world. I don't want to disconnect as a whole, because if say.. "bad weather" does come, well I need to know these things. Or say explainably a cheese burgers goes from one dollar to three dollars, I need to know why the inflation occurred. Gas prices I need to monitor as well.

I feel bad for the media to be honest, because they are all about ratings. Who blames them though, if they don't have the ratings they will go off the air. So why tell the truth, when they can twist it and get every dollar they can out of it. I love how entertainers, are who we follow because they are "such" role models. Truth is, you don't know what is real on the news, and what is not. It is like the difference between women's magazines. If you were to read People or U.S. magazine as opposed to small named magazines with "Bigfoot spotted ..." or "Jacko is still alive and had sex with a goat".

People in the West think they live in a democratic society. They're wrong. We live in a Media/Advertisement society.

The media is very good at putting unecessary fear into all out hearts. For instance, the clusterfuck that is the "War on Terror" in Iraq and the Afghanastain. When Russia rightly rushed to the aid of Russians being ethnically cleansed in Gorgia last year, the Media were the first to start telling us how evil Russia was. The War on Terror is another thing, when the Media are now telling us how unacceptable it is for soldiers to die. I mean Jesus, that is their job. To fight for their country and possibly die for their country. Michael Jackson, another example. They hated Jackson and were completely out of touch with the public who liked him, started all that crap about him wanting to buy the Elephant Mans skeleton, living in a oxygen tank, all lies, but when he was accused of child molestation allegations, they persued the whole "Guilty till proven Innocent" crusade against the poor man, and now he's dead they cant stop going on about how great he is. Only recently has the Guardian newspaper exposed the News of the World for phone tapping several Celebrities phone numbers...if that isn't a blatant act of human rights infringement then I don't know what is.

Yes, the Media is very good at brainwashing the general masses with drivel about what is happening on Big Brother, American Idol or how evil everyone else is except for white people living in the West. And people say that censorship of the media in other countries is a bad thing? Freedom of speech should not mean the right to slander and lie to the world.

I never watch the news, I don't watch much TV at all really, mostly just play video games or am on the Internet, kinda like I am right now. XD

Already have enough to deal with without worrying about stuff on the news...right now it'd just be mostly more stuff related to Michael Jackson anyways (R.I.P., MJ). :P

Exactly what I was about to say. It probably just appears to be bias because of how blatantly shit Labour are and that there's very rarely a good story to report.

If it's on, it's fine, but I don't go out of my way to watch it. I can't be bothered with it...the stories, the monotony, the depression etc. Local news is a bit better - you can relate to it more closely and there's often a nice story or two to top it off.

:P I think that can be said for politicians in general. Must be something to do with all that money and power!

I do watch the news sometimes, usually the 10 o'clock as I miss the others through work and training. But then its not regular. However I listen to the bulletins on the radio, but the main source of news for me is the internet.

That way I can pick and choose what I want to read about, and it's a much wider and varied selection so does that count? Maybe. I like to hear about what's going on I suppose.
