It seems like no one likes Gau from VI...

I want a discussion on his pros and cons... his story.. and any overall details...

I appreciated him as a character, and found his relationships with Cyan and Sabin to be both amusing and heart-warming. I didn't, however, use him in battle much at all.

He didn't get a lot of story devoted to him (unlike a lot of the other characters), but it is a bit hard to give a wild boy who has been roaming the open country with wild beasts for the vast majority of his life any sort of storyline.

What could have happened to him in that time that he could express to us? An evil bear ate his favourite rabbit, and so he vowed to get strong enough to fight the bear? Any sort of storyline like that (while awesome!) would probably not go down very well with the player. They even had to make his most crucial scene optional (and one of my favourites of the game - where he
dresses up smartly to meet his dad, and his dad compliments his appearance but denies that he ever had a son, only recalling a monster
).

So I do like Gau. He's FF's archetypal feral child. His skills fit this. His theme tune is not what you'd expect for his wild lifestyle, but it brings out the human boy inside him. I can't say that I hate him at all, but there are a lot of haters out there.

I didn't not like him, I just didn't know anything about him, I think they put him in the game just to piss people off because the part where you are Sabin and Gau joins you is the only bad part about that game, anyway they didn't delve into his story enough for me to hate him or like him :/

Do I like Gau? Well he reminded me of the comic relief character, all the other characters are dark and mysterious for the most part, then you get Gau who likes shiny things, and says very few lines, but has some of the funniest lines in FFVI. He is suppose to be the comic relief character I think, for the most part.
The only time he isn't a comic relief is when you do the side quest with his father who abandoned him in the wild because Gau's mom dad when he was born.
If you look at Gau as the comic relief character then he is a fun character in the game, otherwise you might not like him.

As far as him in battle, I didn't really use him too much, I just don't like learning enemy skills when you have Sabins Blitz, Edge's Tools, Sabin's Technique, Mog's Dance, Setzers Gambling. Locke's steal was more useful, heck even Relm's sketch I think was a better skill, but I guess they wanted you to have options for what you wanted to do for charcters.

When I think of Gau, I also think of Guy (FF2). I never think much of them and I don't really think they possess any redeeming qualities. I mean there isn't anything bad about them, but they're just not amazing characters.

i mean for fucks sake, guy is almost literally a retard that can barely speak english and communes with animals, yet is good friends with normal people who are perfectly capable of speaking english.

From what I remember, I was rather fond of Gau the character, but didn't really use him much in battle :hmmm:

I was never able to complete the sidequest with his dad though, and I swear I was following a fan guide to the tee Dx

But yeah, his story, while short, was a wee sad.

Side note: I loved how despite having the largest playable cast in the FF series thus far, FFVI still managed to give all the characters some importance. True a lot had to be done through sidequests, but it was there.

I thought Gau was very entertaining. I like how he used the monster's abilities and his sprite animations made me chuckle a few times. I never really used him in the bulk of the game though. Maybe I will when I replay it. :hmmm:

This is actually what makes VI one of my two favorite FFs, it makes the game stand out, and it's fantastic that there isn't really a huge gap between "main characters" and "support cast," they all feel like main characters at certain points.

As for Gau, I've always been very fond of him as a character. His story was endearing, his interactions with Sabin and Cyan were priceless and didn't feel forced to me at all; and I did honestly use some of his skills from time to time. There's one in particular you can get from the Brawler enemy, called Stone, that IIRC does a significant amount of damage; I remember using it quite a lot on soldier enemies at one point :hmmm: (It may have been at the big
Narshe
battle, if Gau was there at that point, it's been so long since I've played that I honestly don't recall :gonk:)

Don't know why people would hate him.......To me he just seemed like another tag-along. But the more the merrier, this is one of the reasons I love VI (the huge cast of characters), his side-story may not be that big and he does seem to keep silent throughout the main story even if you do have him in your party. But because of him, he makes up one fave moments in an FF game. When Cyan and Sabin come accross Gau on the Veldt, and struggle to understand him, I can't remember exactly what was said but I can remember laughing throughout non-stop.

On the battle side of things........He was just useless, I'll admit I never did spend time leaping into enemies to learn new skills...But it just seemed pointless when you can't even control him when selecting a rage.

I loved Gau and thought that he was a powerhouse if he learned the right rages. I spent many hours on the Veldt leaping and finding enemies in both the world of ruin and world of balance. Ever hear of Wind God Gau? It was awesome. Also he can become pretty much invincible with the magic pot rage. There are others but a great thing about his character is that he has a big part of the world just for him. Once you start learning his rages you will find that you will A) save levels for stat boosting and B) gain tons of AP for magic learning. Sure it takes a while but there are a lot of people who go for a 100% game and seem to forget Gau ever existed. It's a challenge.

I liked him as an addition to the already off-beat cast, and I also liked his theme music.

Never used him, though.

I forced myself to like him as a playable character only because I thought his character in the game was funny. Hes pretty worthless early in the game though...once you get into the WOR and youve fought alot more baddies, better rages become available. Cant rememebr any of the top of my head...I onyl came in here ecause I just picked the game up again and started a new one :)

Well at least Gau serve his purposes during the Sabin, Cyan twist imagine without him you will have a hard time to meeting up with the rest of the team.

Yeah, but it was more out of empathy, just feeling sorry for him. He was rejected by his crazy father, and then he was left out in the woods to die. When he meets Sabin and Cyan, he doesn't really know how to make friends, heck he doesn't even know what friends are, and he fails to understand how a human teenaged boy would usually act. Gau has a really tragic life and story, and just can't really dislike him because of those reasons. Actually if Gau did understand, he probably would of ended up insane like Kefka...
