Killing an insect? I always feel bad. I try not to kill bugs, if I find spiders or crawling things I put them outside, but if they fly I usually kill them even though it makes me feel guilty. Does anyone else feel like this?

I once killed a caterpillar/moth larva who was in his cocoon because I thought it turning brown meant it was dying, so I put it out of its misery...

A few years later I find out that the cocoon eventually turns brown when it gets closer to becoming a moth...

I cried for about an hour...

I don't think I've ever killed anything except for a couple of mosquitoes, ants and common flies. The latter I tend to take down with an electric mosquito net that I got from the Far East where there are potentially harmful mosquitoes. Spiders I tend to have someone else deal with them because I'm pathetic and I wouldn't go near one (and I'm talking about the common little harmless spiders you get here in Britain, not the mutant giga spiders that inhabit Australia).

Have I ever felt any guilt for doing so? Occasionally I have surveyed some of the ants that I stepped on, or the fried fly on the electric mosquito racquet and contemplated how it must have sucked to have been snuffed out in such a way. Other times, I have stopped myself from making premeditated moves to kill an insect for no real reason because ultimately, there was no real point in doing so. They weren't harming me. The only time now when I would kill ants is when they send in platoons to invade the house during certain times of the year. When that happens, there's nothing really I can do but kill them. At least with a single spider, I can - or rather, someone else - can get it out of the house without needing to deal with an army of them.

When I was young, I remember actively looking for ants to flatten against the concrete, but I was a kid then, and I basically found anything amusing enough to pass the time. Essentially though, neither of these instances have been a show of guilt. I've never genuinely felt guilt for killing an insect and I certainly didn't when the time came as I was visiting Hong Kong a while back when I did have to take down a mosquito in the house with an electric racquet. I've never had issues with killing an insect that could pose a harm to me and especially my very young cousins at the time. It's perhaps only if you are older than 8, like killing as many of them as possible and torturing them by pinching their legs off one by one for no real reason and/or you find it amusing to, then it kind of makes you a bit of an arse who desperately needs something constructive to do with your time.

Depends what it is, if it's a caterpillar or a lady bug or tiny spider or something like that I can feel pretty bad but if it's a fly or a mozzie or a giant spider I'm cool with it.

The only insects I remember killing are flies. :hmmm: The other month, for example, a fly was going absolutely crazy in my room at 12, midnight. I've never heard anything so loud! >.< It kept swirling around my head, then around the room, then back to my head. Not only was it noisy; I was kinda afraid it was going to fly into my mouth as I slept. :/ I tried to coax it out of the room, then to catch it near to the light, but the shade fell from the light, and the fly went even crazier! :gasp: I have no idea how anything so small made so much noise! >_< The only way I was actually going to sleep was by killing it. :/ I do feel it's a bit guilty to do so, since insects are ultimately harmless in the UK (well, most of them - avoid the black widow spider! ;)) but that fly... :ahmed:

Whenever I see a spider, I do my best to save it. Sometimes, the creatures are so huge and ugly that I actually can't bring myself to touch them, but I'll scoop up daddy longlegs in my hand. I'll ask someone to put the spider outside if I can't do so myself. :hmmm: When I was 11, the girls at school used to kill all the craneflies on the school wall. During summer, HUNDREDS would mate on the wall. There was something very sadistic about 11 year old girls revelling in the deaths of tiny creatures. This sounds lame but... I'd collect between 6 and 10 a day in my lunchbox and take them to my dad's office, where I'd release them at the end of the day. They'd fly off into the room! ^_^

Bees and wasps... I flee from. I am terrified of both.

You guys do realise that by throwing out spiders that are typically found in houses, you pretty much are killing them. The reason you find them indoors is because they can't survive outside.

We've got a couple of them living in our house. Provided they stay in out-of-the-way places, we just leave them alone. Only ever see them sat on their webs right up in the top corners of a room. Plus they take care of any annoying flies that may get in once in a while.

But have I felt guilty for killing an insect? Nope. It's not like I go killing them for the sake of it. Most or purely down to accident, like stepping on some without realising or whatever. But I've had to dispose of pests, like roaches and slugs because they keep getting into the flat. (Don't get any problems with slugs now that we've moved to a second floor flat, though.) And I've also swatted flies because they can be a pain in the arse most of the time.

If they're pests, no mercy for them. :mokken: Like for mosquitoes and flies, I have this electric racket you swing and if they get caught in it, they die instantly. It's like a sport :wacky: For ants I don't mind. Unless I see them eating my food, in which case I drown them in the sink.

Come to think of it, I kill a lot of insects. Worms, caterpillars, even moths and beetles. Okay I am pretty ruthless :hmmm:

I do feel bad when I accidentally kill good spiders. And I can't face bees. I am terrified of bees. :gonk:

Moths?! B-but moths are like night-butterflies...how can you kill them :sad3:

I kill ants when I'm bored sitting outside. Shoes are just perfect for that kinda thing, let's face it.
Flies are annoying and lose their wings for being so. They may live afterwards...depends on if I'm in a good mood.
Spiders are either thrown out the window (potentially landing on a giant spike and slowly bleeding out) or flat out stomped on/put under a glass until they suffocate.
Ladybirds are lovely, so they live and are allowed to crawl upon my person.
Butterflies also.
Moths are creepy and fly into my face...I just sorta huddle in a corner when they are around and hope they stay behind the cupboard where they belong.
Caterpillars are nice enough...
...but not their wormy friends. They are ugly as sin so should stay underground. I don't intentionally kill worms.
Snails make such a delightful crunch when stepped on...but I've only done this by accident and admittedly feel guilty afterwards.
Slugs deserve a bit of salt...they wouldn't taste quite so amazing otherwise.

As for dragonflies:

Ah, that was fun :griin:

Like my signature says..... Hell no. If it's bothering me I might throw some stuff at it. If it's leaving me alone than I don't care. I don't like insects getting in my personal space, so if they do, they will pay a price.

Example, in Florida there are these things called "love bugs" that are attracted to the color white. So they are always crawling and flying on me,which leads to me squashing them.
