I'm a huge dork. I love so many of the places in the Final Fantasy games. (Also, forum newby - Hi.)

About me: I played the ever-living daylights out of FFVII-FFX. I also barely scraped through FFXII (going back to it soon) and quit XIII within the first couple of hours. Yes, I was part of the original PS1 target market (my VII, VIII, and IX copies have black labels) and I'm proud of it.

So I'm listing some of my favorite places in the games I have played. I encourage you to do the same - I want to know what you think. :)

Top 5 - in no particular order

The Blitzball Stadium - FFX
Seriously, they hooked me something bad in the opening FMV. I wanted to know what this awesome game was and when I could start playing it.

It was a great touchstone for the overall feel of FFX and its integration as the main minigame for X was pretty flawless. I especially liked the recruitment aspect of it, which was far more interesting to me than a lot of the other side quests of the game, sadly. The overall look and feel of the stadiums is pretty cool.

I only wish human beings had fish gills so we could play it IRL.

Fisherman's Horizon - FFVIII
You might be wondering why this one is on the list. Indeed, I didn't care much for FH during my first and perhaps my second playthroughs of the game.

For some reason, though, it has become one of my favorite locales in FFVIII. This has a lot to do with my discovery of the Master Fisherman sidequest in its entirety (not just stopping with Occult Fan III!).

In that small story quest, the Master Fisherman explains the origins of FH and why the place exists in the first place. It also gives an intimate and forgiving picture of Mayor Dobe, who up until this point was someone I considered a speed bump on the road to getting Garden mobile and getting another rare card. You get to see a different side of the people who initially decide to reject you. It's one of those awesome 'wow' moments that helps you understand the backstory to the game. Later, there is the fun concert scene that emo-Squall decides to ruin (still a good moment in the story) and the place that Squall starts on his journey to help Rinoa. Great moments all.

Icicle Inn - FFVII
Other than looking like a place I would love to live in (ski town please!) this town contains a lot of the history about Dr. Gast, Ifalna, and Aeris. It's also the jumping off point for one of the most epic story arcs in any of the FF games (which is saying quite a bit). I group this place in with the Glacier where you land after snowboarding and Mr. Holzoff's house.

Lindblum - FFIX
FFIX was perhaps my least favorite of the PS1 Final Fantasy's but had some of the most breathtaking places. There are a lot to list, but perhaps the best example of them is Lindblum.

I like its role as one of the tragic centers of the game (Atomos summon? Holy crap!). The people are sad, but resilient. It really fits the player's emotional state at that point in the game.

Alexandria plays second fiddle to Lindblum in overall greatness for me, probably due to my affinity for airships. The Alexandrian castle is epic, though.

Lunar Base - FFVIII
I was really sad when I figured out that you wouldn't really get to play much of the game here. Interesting, considering how underwhelming I found Esthar to be. The *only* con to this place is how monumentally annoying the card rules are initially (learn how to abolish, kids!).

Spoiler alert? The story portion here is stunning. Regardless of how you feel about the whole sorceress-within-a-sorceress-within-a-sorceress drama (or as one of my friends calls it, the "candy rocket ship to crazy town") looking through the telescope to see the Lunar Cry starting is one of the coolest scenes in the game as a whole.

Not to mention the fact that shooting off into space after the disaster leads to a movie-worthy romance scene. (Who am I kidding - I'd rather play this game than watch a movie!)

Honorable mentions:
Balamb Garden - I would have included it, but it's so ubiquitous to the game's plot that you don't really have to go out of your way to see it as a special place. The battle against Galbadia Garden is stunning.
Midgar - Same as Balamb Garden, you spend a large portion of the early game here. Great scenes include the Shinra escape and anything involving the Sector 6 church (meeting Aeris, later visions, music).
Shinra mansion, Nibelheim - meeting Vincent and getting his story, going the basement on disc 3 to watch the videos.
Daguerro - Just a really cool place to be in. Wish it had been more involved in the main story.
Bevelle - As evil as this place is, I did love the look of it.

I realize these are all from VII-X. These are the games that stick with me. I've only played through XII once and have yet to start VI (I need to get on that.) So, give me a reason to play the others. What are your favorites?

:hmmm:

Setzer's Airship(FFVI)
I'm not sure if this will count as a local, but you can explore it so that's good enough for me. This is my favorite airship in all games. I like how the inside has a somewhat casino setting. Makes me think about Vegas in the sky.

Lindblum(FFIX)
I too have a great liking for this city. It is huge, there's a lot to explore and there are airships everywhere. I feel it is the best designed city in all of the games. Plus, who would want to live in a kingdom where you ruler is an oglop? xD

Wall Market(FFVII)
Though they should just sell out and call this place Wal-Mart, I liked this run down little piece of the slums. They have a brothel, shops, a gym, and a weapons dealer with a big friggin' tank. I always liked the music for this place as well.

The Moon(FFIV)
Arguable one of my favorite "last areas" in all the games. I like the idea of having to travel through space. When I played this game, walking around and fighting on the moon seemed really cool.

Islands Closet to Heaven/Hell(FFVIII)
VIII may not be my favorite of the series, but I do enjoy these two islands. I love to grind in FF games and these locals were the best grinding spots in VIII. I like it when games put certain areas with harder monsters. It helps you level when other areas may not be a challenge any more.

Nice thread topic ;) Welcome to the forums!

My five, in no particular order:

Eruyt Village (XII) - One of the most peaceful and beautiful areas of any FF world that I've seen. The music is indescribably touching and though I'm not sure what they would do if it rained, it seems like it would be a lovely place to live.

Toroia (IV) - Similar reasons, actually, but aside from the plot elements that happen here, this strikes me as one of the loveliest and most tranquil places to be in any FF world. I would have to do the original SNES version though, I prefer the instrumentation on the music in that one over the DS one :hmmm:

Mt. Zozo (VI) - Hard to pick because I love the whole world in this game, but I liked the sort of refreshing feeling the story element gave to this place. It seemed like it had the whole vibe of "going up to the top of a mountain for a while to meditate on life" and I love that sort of thing.

Memoria (IX) - Though I don't think I would want to live there, it was a stunning concept for a location and it was very well done. Very unique to the series and the atmosphere created by the music was perfect.

Lunar Subterrain (IV) - Even though getting through this area is a pain in the butt, I do really like the atmosphere of the moon, and this area had a really good "time is of the essence" feel to it. The light coming from (what looked like the core?) underground kind of gave this impression of getting closer to a source of creation, or a "new frontier," or something, it's kind of hard to explain but it felt like one of those cool "trying to understand more about our existence" places and I really enjoyed it.

Honorable mention: The Sochen Cave Palace (XII) It had such a great vibe for an ancient ruin, you see numerous ruins throughout the FF universe, but for some reason I felt like you could really feel something epic about this place, like something significant had gone on there at some point, and that the spirits and memories of that time were still lingering.

My Top 5 places in FF:
Balamb Garden- has to be on the list- it has everything in it, and it's mobile.
Bhujerba- its cool to have a city in the sky, plenty of NCPs and a long ass dungeon.
Golden Saucer- has all your entertainment needs.
Besaid Island- its peaceful and seems like a nice relaxing place.
Fisherman's Horizon- its just a great idea for a location/style for a place.

As for scenery and sights:
Moonflow (what a killer video that was).
Lifa Tree was quite unique.
Cosmo Canyon- who could forget that sunset when approaching the palce?
Midgar- its grity, dirty, raw, and real- plus it is the starting point for one of the greatest epics in video game history.

It is harder for the 2D games to have "great" places when compared with the 3d environments.

This would be a great question for all RPG's.

Great Question! Here are my picks.

Final Fantasy IX - Ispen's Castle
Final Fantasy IV - Lunar Subterrane
Final Fantasy X - Zanarkand (Pre Sin)
Final Fantasy XIV - Coerthas
Final Fantasy VII - Forgotten Capital

Treno (FFIX)- I loved the atmosphere and the inhabitants are interesting.
Balamb Garden (FFVIII)- Your own home to fly around in, grab summons from a desk and fight against other flying objects: loved it
Archadia (XII)-loved that we got to meet the citizens of the enemy empire as well
Midgar (VII)- so interesting and feeling so real.
Pulse (XIII)- when first arriving I just wandered around gaping at the scenery (and enormous monsters)

I don't think there's any way I could whittle it down to just 5

tomb of the unknown king (hence the username)

centra excavation site

temple of the ancients

gold saucer

shinra headquarters

ancient forest

sector 5

deep sea research center

great salt lake

edea's orphanage

timber

just a few favourite places from 7 & 8

Wow. Hmm. I need to dig back in the vaults to answer this question.

I had a particular order of favorites, but I don't remember them now.

a. Ipsen's Castle (IX): I like weird, mysterious things. When I first saw the castle, I thought, "This place is crazy. I'm going to like this." I think I got lost a few times. I liked the traps. And I liked having to scrounge for old ass weapons again. What struck me the most about this place was the fact that it reminded me of The Winchester Mystery House.

2. Gold Saucer (VII): I like Theme Parks. I like fun. I like playing video games within a video game. I like being able to drift away from the main quest and goof off. Gold Saucer is the place for me.

z. North Gustaberg (XI): Music plays a large part of why I like certain places. I think I said that before, but I forget. Anyway, after many hours of partying, I like to come back here and run around. Sometimes, I'll help a lowbie out. Sometimes I'll just talk to people that pass by. Often times, I end up falling asleep during my gameplay, and waking up to the tune of the Gustabergs. This is what makes the area so memorable.

V. Centra Ruins (VIII): The home of my favorite "Final Fantasy Super Monster Kick Ass" guy/girl/thing. Of course, this has to be one of my favorite locales, by default.

99. Gran Pulse (FFXIII): I know it seems strange for me to list this as my favorite locale, even though I haven't experienced it by hand. But I've experienced it by eyes through watching hundreds of videos of Gran Pulse, and it is absolutely gorgeous. I love it.
