I just wanted to see what everyone liked besides Final Fantasy :P Mine is one that many people either have never heard of or despise. Ironically enough it is also my all time favorite game ever....The Legends of Dragoon.

I'm actually currently playing Chrono Cross for the first time because I'm from the UK :( So far it's pretty impressive especially the soundtrack. My favourite non-final fantasy game that springs to mind right away is Dark Chronicle. I loved the gameplay and the time changing aspect of it as well as the cell shaded appearance.

Oh man I am an RPG freak... I will name a few to start with.

Shining Force 1+2
Suikoden Series
Dark Cloud
Jade Cocoon
Breath of Fire III+IV
Wild Arms 1-3 (haven't played anything past 3)

For this generation
Valkeria Chronoclies
Aterlier Series

NonFF games from Square Enix
Star Oceans 1,2,4
Chrono Trigger/Cross
Dragon Quest VII and VIII
Saga Frontier 1+2

I mean I just love RPG games, they are some of my favorite games of all time even if you take out Final Fantasy/ Kingdom Hearts even take out Square/Enix games

I don't think this counts.... but Freelancer I kinda consider an RPG, though Wikipedia disagrees; "Space trading and Combat Simulation" is the term used. Still awesome. If that doesn't count I'd have to sayyyyyyyy Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was a pretty awesome game.

Although, If my emulator didn't destroy my save when I was playing Mother/Earthbound I think that might have come close.

None of them compare to FFX though. :)

My favourite non-FF JRPG is...Star Ocean 4. The cast of characters is excellent, Edge is a fantastic protagonist who has never managed to make me want to argue for partial-birth abortion and the private action events are so brilliant and witty that I couldn't get enough of them.

No, wait. I was joking.

I HATE Star Ocean 4 with a burning passion. Screw the damn thing. I don't care if the combat system is decent and the environment visuals rather good. It's ruined by a bunch of characters and voice acting that have no redeeming value whatsoever, clocked by Edge making me wish that Faize could stab him in the abdomen with his sword to take over as main character (even if his descent later on is predictable as heck) and the game is just embarrassing. To anyone who hasn't yet been graced with this horror, watch some of the private action events on Youtube. Something has gone wrong (or hilarious) when Lymle turns out to be the most endearing character for me.

No, instead, I give that award to Xenoblade Chronicles, to absolutely no one's surprise. I don't need to go into detail to explain why I love the game, but essentially, I think as a game, it's come the closest to delivering what it promised. It's not a Skyrim open world that some people fooled themselves into thinking it would be, but its maps are staggeringly vast and teeming with life as a cacophony of
wildlife roam around, some in packs, some on their own, with some hidden areas granting EXP that beg you to invest time in exploring. And I love exploring. In addition to that, the lack of HD is evident, but the vistas continue to be absolutely stunning, helped by the surrealism of the game's actual physical setting. FFXII has the better writing, but Xenoblade has the superior story in general (story and writing aren't the same thing, folks!), though the writing in the game makes the Faced villains seem too much like Saturday morning cartoon villains. In short, the game deserves the hype. Not every bit of hype, because it's not the perfect Jesus game, but most of the hype.

My favourite non-Japanese RPG? Well, I've not comprehensively dived into many. I do enjoy Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind for its breathtaking size even if it looks relatively dated, but its combat leaves quite a lot to be desired. I can overlook it because huge world sizes make me giddy. I also enjoyed the KOTOR games, with the story of the second game, despite it being cut in many places by Obsidian before launch, but thankfully restored thanks to a mod, being a significant improvement over the original. They're both very dated however, but it was the thrill of being a Dark Side Sith-in-training that gave me a bit of fun.

Overall for a non-JRPG however, it has to be the Mass Effect series so far, and in case, since I've only played the first game, it's ME1. I fell in love with the characters - a diverse bunch of intergalactic species with their own distinct personalities, backstories, ambitions and quirks. Not one of them made me wish I could throttle them or just shoot them dead in the face, unlike Star Ocean 4 and that POS's circus. It's deliciously meaty with all the sidequests and planets you can casually wander on, as limited as they are. For people accustomed with JRPG towns before entering a WRPG, the Citadel felt like one comfortable, solid JRPG hub city to me. The combat may seem clunky, but ME2 and ME3 going by the demos and other fans, definitely improve that area significantly, though I'm slightly concerned that the games later on become less of an RPG and more of a general TPS with light RPG elements to it.

Being an RPG fanatic, there's so many games too choose from. I have to say my favorite though is one of my favorite games of all time, Dragon Age: Origins. I just love this game for whatever reason, and I'm so close to 100%-ing it. There really isn't that many RPGs I dislike though.

Agreed with the Dragon Age Origins post.
I hope the next Dragon Age game is just as good and not as poor conceived/produced as the second game was.

Others I like include Legend of Dragoon.I still have hopes someday Sony will reconsider and make a sequel.

Baldurs Gate 2.
Breathe of Fire
Grandia
Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen

plus there are some others further down the list.

Mother 2 (EarthBound) :ryan:

It's such a wacky and fun RPG and there was really nothing quite like it. The whole time it's a happy, fun, carefree atmosphere, but you know there is something sinister and evil lurking underneath.

If anything I wish they would remake the series or put it up for download somewhere, but it doesn't seem possible at this point since they wouldn't release it on the Virtual Console. But I can always dream!

I like RPGs in general. It's my primary genre.
My favorite outside of Final Fantasy would have to be the Star Ocean series. I also liked Lost Odyssey- it lacks a little bit compared to newer titles, but the game itself is just damn beautiful. The story and storytelling in it is great.

And Secret of Mana :ohoho:
Unfortunately, I never played the others.

Suikoden II is by far the best RPG I've ever had the pleasure of playing. It's a beauitful game, with an amazing story! 108 characters to collect and play as and ugh... everything about it is so goooood! I wish I could have gotten a copy of it before it reached $150 on ebay :(

Like a Few others said theirs way to many rpgs. You have no idea how hard that is...I can't even answer it cause I feel like im downgrading another series that deserves just as much. But If you really want me to answer that ill just say a series instead of game but the "Tales of ..." series Im quite fond of.

And I to love legend of dragoon I still have it although it freezes on the results screen after the fight where you get Meru's dragoon spirit. I know that cause i recently replayed it and ran ino that freeze :/

Xenogears

The only thing keeping it from being as good (if not better) than Final Fantasy VII is the mediocrity of the second disc.

This is tough. I'm torn between Wild Arms 1, Grandia 1, Golden Sun 1 and Skies of Arcadia. Someone decide for me!
Ok ok, I'll say Wild Arms for now, but it'll change loads I'm sure. It's got the staple JRPG elements that I love, along with a spaghetti western soundtrack and old-fashioned graphics.

It's one of those near-perfect games for me :)

Xenogears, Mother 3, Paper Mario TTYD, Soul Hackers, Persona 3 Portable, TWEWY, Earthbound, and The Last Story.

Yep, I'm a weirdo.

I'll go ahead and say the Mass Effect trilogy. Technically not one game I guess, but with you being able to take your save game without throughout the entire series, I will argue that it kinda plays like a single game :P For very much a blank slate kind of character, Shepard had a lot more personality than most more tighly scripted video game leads, the story is amazing, and after the first game, the combat got really really solid. There were a few kinks along the way like some DLC of questionable quality and value, and of course the ending of the third game (which while not good, I honestly didn't think was THAT bad either) but over all Mass Effect was amazing.

I'll have to say my favorite is the whole golden sun series. I just like the old fashioned playing style.
my second will have to be Mario rpg. Don't know why. It's just fun I guess. And a little silly

I'll be honest, I haven't played a large amount of RPGs. However, I do hope to change that. Hooray for emulators!

I have started playing Summon Night: Swordcraft Story, and so far I like it. The story is pretty damn cool, I love the concept and fighting style (even if Pratty does a casual swagger stroll in battle screens) but for the life of me I cannot get the forge thing to work. All I can find in the labyrinth are Bottomless Cups (I'm too low level to defeat anything fiercer than a Slime) and when I smelt them at the forge I don't get any materials.

What am I doing wrong?

Also, I plan on playing Chrono Trigger/Cross/Crusade, and the Mother series. I dunno if you can find the first Mother game in English anywhere, my Japanese is kinda sucky.

Also, does Zelda count as an RPG? 'Cause I do love a bit of Zelda.

I could have sworn I posted in here before. :ahmed: I'm watching you, FFFBank. Anyway, I know for sure that the only other two RPG's I've played are Kingdom Hearts, and Paper Mario on the N64. Paper Mario was no fucking joke. I got so annoyed by that game. It was hard for me at the time. I haven't played it since like, 2005 though. So.... I'm gonna have to say Kingdom Hearts. Even if it's an "action RPG", it still says RPG so it's fucking eligible for this discussion. There. Kingdom Hearts. The original game on PS2. Not that knock off called Kingdom Hearts 2. >_>
