EDIT: Mine i think would have to be a tie between Steiner and Amarant.
Steiner is part of the tie because if you get him to a high enough level and have either Excalibur or Excalibur II he pretty much hits 9999 every time.

And Amarant is part of the tie because he is just plain badass, plus when i cheated i had 99 Excalibur II's so i would just have him use his "throw" command and it was a definite 9999 every time.

You missed Vivi for the playable characters.


And you missed Blank, Cinna and Marcus for the temporary playable characters.

I guess you could count Cid Fabool IX as well, though I don't think you control him in battle at any point. He still counts as a temporary character I guess.



To answer the question for me would be hard though, as FFIX was one of those games where I loved all the characters.

I did admire Steiner though. I barely used him in battle on my first and so far only play through, but I enjoyed his scenes quite a lot, particularly those on the first and second disc. I loved the comic relief with him trying to do his duty and being quite incompetent really at times.

I also loved Vivi and the feelings and personal issues he must have gone through learning about the other Black Mages. Some sad scenes with him and I just want to pat him on the head for being awesome.

Zidane was probably my favourite lead male character in all FF's. His attitude, design, and story really entertained me.


Out of the temporary characters I think Beatrix was the one with the better abilities by far. The others just had a few silly things for the play but asides from that it was just attack and item I think. However I liked the whole of the Tantalus Troupe, so it was good to be able to play as three of them at different parts of the game, and I think I like those three equally.

Why thank you Dan, i was thinking i was forgetting someone.... can't believe i forgot Vivi though, he was one of my favorites T_T. And yes i would include Cid but you couldn't actually ever play as him so yeah..... but now that you mention it, Vivi would tie with Amarant and Steiner i guess.... his scenes kicked so much ass... i shit brix.. lmao.

But yeah, his feelings toward things make me a little sad, i mean really..... he was made by Kuja..... he was like the emo character of FFIX, but although most of the emo kids need to just pull the trigger Vivi would just be all "IMA CHARGN MAH FIREBALL" and that would be it. lmao
 
Is it wrong if I say Quina? Quina can become one of the most powerful members of your team very easily. S/he has three main assets that will make things very easy for you:
  • Frog Drop: Quina's level * number of frogs he's caught, ten MP. This means you can pull it out a lot, and, if you keep up with frog catching, you can be pouring out a lot of non-negotiable damage
  • Matra Magic and Limit Glove: Matra Magic reduces the target's HP to 1, and Limit Glove does an automatic, non-negotiable 9,999 damage to the target if Quina's HP is 1. Combine with Cover from Freya or Steiner (takes damage for a critically injured ally) and Reflect (bounces off magic), and you're made.
  • Auto-Life: ... duh.

S/he can also learn most of the best support abilities in the game.
Freya is also a beast of variety with her Dragon skills, and her Trance is amazing, but she didn't make my squad.




With regards to storyline, almost certainly Garnet or Vivi.

Humm hard one, I liked Eiko the most, and zidane.
Eiko because she looks cool :) :L and zidane because his character amuses me alot.

Then it would be blank, and the tantalus squad, because they are plain awsome :)

I did not like vivi, because he was so depressing all the time,
or garnet, she seemes quite pathetic tbh. :)
 
Of the main ones? All of them except Eiko. My favorite is Freya, however, but I use them all...except Eiko, when I can help it.

Of the temp ones? Is there much competition? :P Beatrix.
 
Of the main characters, my fav is Zidane. He has a unique story and is one of my best characters in battle (mainly because you can't swap him out).

Of the temporary characters, its Beatrix. No contest. In battle, she is just made of pure awesomeness.
 
My favorite playable character in Final fantasy IX is Princess Garnet. I found her very useful and she is very pretty too. Summons were :awesome: I also loved her character. I wonder how she would sound. I liked Zidane too in his trance form. He was cool.
 
Zidane was kinda cool but not my favorite. I always liked something about Steiner. I think it was the bumbling stupidity of a Royal Commander that I thought was very odd and out of character which made me like him.

As far as Temp characters go... Blank was seriously awesome. I was like "NOOOOOOOO" when he got petralized in the forest. But once Beatrix joined up I was like "DUUUUDE! SHE'S AWESOME!" So if I had my way... my party would consist of Steiner, Beatrix, and Blank
 
I must say its hard for me to choose, since all the characters have their own story and background and abilities. the characters i love the most, (sorry for not choosing just one). i must say Vivi, Freya and Zidane. I think their stories and background did it. and well they all got great abilities of course.
 
Vivi is my all-time favourite FF Character for all the games I've played, I-X2 (excluding III). He's just great. I love his emotion, his story, how sweet and innocent his personality shines through even though he gets roped into saving the world withe the rest of the gang, I love the back-story about how was made on a production line with his 'brothers', the visit to his grandad, the may he unlocks the secrets of Black Magic deep within himself, I just love him full stop. If Viv were real, I would adopt him and take care of him and let him unleash firey hell against my enemies, hehe :)
So, for my first ever post, the only reason I registered is to say how much I adore this character and always have!

Both of these characters really rocked, Zidane his Dyne abilities were irreplaceable. And Steiner was a powerhouse. So to choose between them is a really hard thing to do. I mean Zidane was a really awesome character. His story was really great and it touched me when you found out the truth. And Steiner it was the same way. From the moment you meet him you can tell he was a character that was a lot deeper than what he looked like.
 
Zindane was my favourite character to play as and temp would Beatrix and Blank both were awesome
 
I never played FFXI so my opinion wouldn't count, but I really like Zidane and Garnet/Dagger.
 
My personaly favourite playable character from my favourite game of all time, would have to be Vivi. I just love the way he looks, the way he acts, his nature, his battle performance, everything. He is the greatest magical attacker in FFIX and has a wide variety of spells and skills.
