The settings of the games

How did you like the settings in each of the Final Fantasies?

VII -- I thought it was brilliant, and everything went quite well with the dark undertones of the story. Also, the mix that Wutai contributed was great, I think.

VIII -- kinda futuristic, and I liked the cities of Deling, just because it was bustling with activity. ^_^ Plus, Esthar was just awesome, in my opinion.
Overall, I loved the way the cities contributed to the feel of the game.

IX -- the most 'fantasy' like locations I've ever seen, and again, it just made the feel of the game that much more unique.

X -- the temples contributed a lot to the religious aura around the game, obviously. The design of the blitzball stadium was pretty nice too, nothing else like it. I'm glad Square mixed things up with Besaid and Kilika, nice balance. ^_^

Well, those are the ones that I've played so far so....tell me what you think of the settings. :D

P.S. Since I didn't include FFI through FFVI, you can add those in and talk about those too. ^_^

IV-It had a nice fantasy-like setting, particularly with the castles and towns, which I loved.

V and VI-Haven't played enough of these to say. I have save files on both games right now but it's still pretty early on in the games.

VII-I really liked the settings in this one, especially the slums of midgar, rocket town, cosmo canyon and the forgotten capital.

VIII-Nice settings that added a lot to the futuristic feel of the game, especially esthar. Deling city really reminded me of a bustling city also.

IX-I absolutely loved the whole atmosphere of the game, settings and all. Had a very fantasy-like feel that reminded me a lot of IV.

X-I liked the settings in this one also, especially how there were ruins everywhere. Baaj temple and the thunder plains were my favorite areas.

XII-XII did a wonderful job of conveying the differences in the areas of the game. I loved how the weather changed often and I loved the vastness of the games areas.

VI-i thought the setting was similar to final fantasy VII, or should i say VII was simlar to VI. it was industrialized in cities like vector, but then all of the villages in the empire were awesome. i like the whole oppressive empire idea with towns occupied by soldiers and resistance groups trying to fight back. another great setting, can't complain about much at all.

VII-i thought it was awesome the way they had the modernized the city of midgar, which was the industrial armpit of the world and then have cities like mideel. the blend was awesome and to be honest i loved everything about the setting, not one complaint.

VIII-a little too futuristic at some points. almost every city in the game was modernized and the whole futuristic look isn't my cup of tea, though i did like deling city, balamb town, and of course the glorious esthar.

IX- brilliant. i thought this was the best job they did with a final fantasy ever. i love medieval settings with knights and swords and magic, and this game fit that perfectly. i also love the way they tried to show how that world was taking steps toward modernization, with the airships, and the entire city of lindblum itself, this one got an A+.

X- this world really had a lot of potential. i just wish that it had let you see more of it, which is why the world map you can explore is so important. but anyway, i wish you had been able to explore bevelle for yourself since it was one of the biggest cities on the planet.

XII-i thought it was pretty well done, but nothing about it really wowed me. my favorite places by far were rabanastre and archades, aside from them there wasnt really anything special about FFXII's ivalice.

VII - The setting was simply wonderful. Probably one of the best in the series, in my opinion. Simple, yet beautiful.

VIII - Love it as well. Sure, it seems futuristic, but it was a nice touch overall. I especially love where the Moombas were at.

IX - Classic! Castles and such - just fantastic and pure fantasy. One of my favorites.

X - So-so. The fact that we never really got to explore the world didn't help at all. The world seems more realistic to me more than anything.

XII - The world is just way out there. I can tell that it's a very big world, but again - no world map, so I didn't really get an overall feel of the whole world. But from what I saw, it was definitely nice.

FFs I-II were pretty similar, so it's tough to rate them due to the blocky limits of the graphics. Towns and castles all look similar, but oh well.

FFIV: A bit better, with more varied locations, but still restricted due to graphics. Technology is more present than in FFI, with the Blue Whale and the Giant of Bab-El.

FFV: Same as above, but less varied, in my opinion. More like I-II.

FFVI: Limited still, but less so. The increasing technological presence worked in some places, didn't in others (the sinking castle of Figaro is just plain illogical).

FFVII: An improvement over FFVI, with better integration of technology, nicely balanced by the more rural outlying towns beyond Midgar.

FFVIII: Technology overload, probably the most tech-based setting in FF ever, until FFXIII (by the looks of it). It still worked, though.

FFIX: The perfect fantasy setting that sat well with the more light-hearted story (compared to the previous two). Great design of cities, extremely varied, as well as the otherworldly Terra planet.

FFX: Probably the best overall setting that fully complemented the rich story. The laid-back, island feel of Besaid was perfect, and the religious presence of the temples resonated immensely.

FFXII: Certain areas, such as Rabanastre were very impressive at first, but it didn't take long before many settings blended. The dungeons and caves were rather bland, and other cities became smaller versions of Rabanastre.

Overall, FF has a great track record for settings.

FFI-6 - i liked but due to them bein 2d i cant say much

FFVII - awesome i loved midgar and all the small towns i could never figure out when it was set though

FFVIII - it was just a wee bit too futuristic for my liking but the gardens were a great idea.

FFIX - definately my favourite i love the fantasy settings the best, lindbulm is one of the greatest places in FF

FFX i really liked how its futuristic yet they live without technology (nothing can bring this game down) it keeps the fantasy setting

FFXII - it was decent nothing new really. The cities though were very impressive

I - V ……..…………..……………..Moderate to good storylines, but to be honest, nothing that really impressed me setting wise with any of them.

VI - Was interesting, I liked how it had a semi-modern industrial setting to it mixed with that old school FF atmosphere.

VII - This one reminded me of VI as well, although I did like the darker theme and look of Midgar. I liked how the size and setting of city made it seem as if it was a world all to its own.

VIII - I absolutely loved the mix of modern and futuristic settings blended with a little bit of that old world feel. Of all the FF’s, VIII remains my favorite for this very reason. All of the cities settings where beautifully done and well tied in, in my opinion, especially Deling City and Esthar.

IX - I definitely liked the setting and feel to this one. Its light hearted, yet still retains that excellent Final Fantasy story and feel of old.

X- Again, I absolutely loved this FF as well. I thought the use of a religion was an interesting approach. One society kept technologically ignorant by their own hypocritical religious leaders while the other outcast society defies a thousand years of doctrine and embraces technology as their true savior.

XII - I have my well known disappointments about this FF, but I still liked the setting of a small nation caught up in the political strife between two warring nations as well as the mature level of storytelling. I only wish we where given more of a back-story to the Occuria.

what kind of setting do you like?

This basically here to tell you what part of the world u like in final fantasy and why. like i like final fantasy 10's calm lands because it's where you can build up your sphere grid more and u can ride chocobo's and do the catch the monster quest 4 the monster arena guy. Cheers

I like VII's Midgar - Cold, eerie streets, you never know what lurks around the next corner and yet has sophisicated technology in places as well.

I like most, if not all of FFVIII's settings. SapphireStar is right about Balamb, it's so nice! Other places like Timber are nice and small, then you get the complete opposite with Esthar; futuristic!
It's all superb.

^ Agreed!

I love the places in Final Fantasy VIII. Balamb is very nice, it looks peaceful and very beautiful there. Esthar looks very futuristic and awesome, Timber looks like a great place to live and I think I could go on and on about the different places in that game. Dollet is a nice big town with plenty of shops and houses, Winhill is a pretty little village with a small population but seems like such a wonderful place to live.

FFX's places and cities are very nice too. Besaid, Moonflow, Guadosalam and many more!

Same here… I loved most of the settings in FFVIII.

The one I loved the most was Deling City, everything about the city was beautiful. From the architecture of the buildings, the design of the town, to the night time setting of a clear sky full of stars and a full moon with a hint of twilight on the horizon... Like I said, I absolutely loved the entire setting and design of this location.

I think that FFX had some of the most out there, beautiful, and fun environments that I've ever seen in FF. Macalania forest is just so gorgeous; it's my most frequently visited area in the game. The calm lands are full of fun minigames, and I love just running around on the chocobos for no reason. I also really like the Omega ruins; the look and feel, and the monsters. ^.^

I really love beautiful environments the most. Something really beautiful and unreal. My personal favorite, like I said, is Macalania forest. I also loved Ultimecia's castle in FFVIII.

I agree with people in that VIII has many locales that are just beautiful and varied. I love Balamb, Winhill and Balam Garden for there quaint, peaceful nature. I think the score accompanying them are really spot on and really project the mood the humble mood of each of the said locations. One other such locale that I loved was Deli, from IX. That was such a nice, quaint setting that I really looked forward to when replaying the game. The Slums, Besaid and Timber were also quaint settings that I really enjoyed wondering in. Contrasts from these small areas such as the futuristic Esthar, Towering Lindblum and entertaining Golden Saucer offered amazing bustling locations that were just beautiful too. Mysterious, eerie places such as Ultmecia's Castle, Macalania Forest, Temple of the Ancients and Kuja's Castle were also great locales.
I could really go on, however, I don't want to write a book. ;)

Yep FFVIII has beautiful location, Balamb especially and most of the towns are great too. I like the whole FFX setting too, lots of bright colors really cheerful :D

I enjoy tropical-type settings, and if they include a beach, even better. Places like Besaid Island from FFX and Phon Coast from FFXII are some of my favorite areas.

Macalania woods was gorgeous. The crystal blue color, glittering and icy colors was beautiful.

FFVIII and FFX have the best setting in my opinion.

Ultimecia's castle had such an eerie, dark environment. The music fits the environment perfectly. I love running around the castle and looking in different rooms.

The farplane in FFX had a lovely setting as well.

I really love medieval fantasy settings so IX is pretty much my favorite as far as setting goes. The music in IX also added so much to the places. Alexandria, Burmecia and Daguerreo were some of my favorites.

I loved Ultimecia's Castle. It was pretty much the highlight of the game for me. The atmosphere, the music and the eerie emptiness of it was just perfect.

X had some nice settings as well. Macalania woods was gorgeous. And I really loved the ruins around Baaj Temple.
