I'm receiving the FFX HD Remaster for Vita here in a few weeks, and the first blitzball encounter I've only won once (I've attempted it three times from three different playthroughs).

It looks like it could be fun, and I want to get good at it, I'm also planning on getting all of Wakka's overdrives, which (if I'm not mistaken) requires you to do Blitzball matches for quite some time even after the first encounter.

I just can't seem to get the strategy of it, though. Any tips, tricks, or even well done guides?

Possession. They are the vastly superior team so possession is key and you need to be clinical. No point shooting from outrageous distances as you don't have the HP to be able to pull it off more than once. Ideally you need to learn the JEcht Shot which should guarentee you a first half goal and then you just need to focus on getting a 2nd half goal before Wakka comes - then maybe try and press on with him to get a third. Don't let them get shots in on goal 'cause Keepa is very poor. Try and draw a couple of players towards you and then throw a pass without them being close enough to warrant a block ; pass to an open forward (preferable tidus/wakka) and then dribble as close as possible before shooting.

There's a cheat when your can hide behind your goalie and the other team won't see you. Because of the really long cut scenes before the match I usually get my first goal and then hide behind the goalie so the other team can't get any goals. Another way to do it is to get your first goal and then pass the ball back and forth between your team members so the other guys can't get a goal as well. This is the better way to do it (you get more exp for your team) but is more risky since at that point in the game any slip up that means the ball ends up with the other team means they'll probably score a goal.

score early, run out the clock by passing/evading

you CAN learn the Jecht Shot on the boat to Luca, but it is not necessary to secure a win because the Goers' goalie really sucks.

try and have everyone get as many touches in the first half as you can. you can't really afford to let them get the ball at all, as they'll almost certainly score and you probably can't come from behind in that game. letty and tidus are your key ones. equip sphere shot for tidus rather than jecht shot (if you have it) as i always find that sphere shot has a better chance of success, particularly so early on. however if you want to play it a little safer, jecht shot can take out two defenders without having to break to them.

the one time i actually did win the game, wakka was the one who won it for me. he has posion shot from the beginning, which again has a very good chance of success so if you can withstand a tackle then he has a good chance of scoring.

a good little tactic is to give it to either of your defenders and swim as far wide as you can, but not too high up. both of their forwards are poor tacklers so you should be able to survive a break, and then you can pass to your forward on that side.
