I've been going with the character combo that every source recommends (Light/Fang/Hope) and perform my usual routine of buff/debuff at the start (Evened Odds), swap between Diversity and Relentless assault paradigms, and occasionally switch to combat clinic or back to evened odds. But its still an uphill battle that I can't keep up with. I haven't even gotten close to the part that everyone talks about, where he casts doom on the party.

So far I'm level 4 as a Commando, Saboteur, and Synergist for Light, Fang, and Hope, respectively. And part way through level 3 in each of their other 2 classes (rav/med, com/sen, rav/med). How much do I need to grind to make this feasible?

I've upgraded a number of weapons to level 9. But it looks like advancing on the crystarium is much more effective for increasing strength and magic.

Anyways, whats the most efficient way to grind from where I am (savepoint before Oerba Barth encounter). The best I've found is to backtrack from the savepoint, run past vampire/seeker group, and defeat the 2 flyers on the narrow bridge (only takes me 30 seconds). Then I run back forward and trigger the cutscene, skip, enter battle with Barth, "retry", and when I run back, the flyers have respawned. This takes a total of 2 minutes to do, for 3000 crystal points. Or 90,000 per hour.

I only had one respective role per charecter at level four when I beat him. I would suggest Fang, Sazh, and Hope. Start out with Prudent planning (SEN/SYN/SYN). This will get you full buffs in about twenty seconds. Before you go into guard mode usa a librascobe.Don't even try to debuff him until he's staggered if you do he will take away his defuffs and your buffs. Start the chain gauge with RA and keep it that way till stagger. Then switch to evened odds to get the debuffs on him, after that back to RA. Use protection to heal and have a doctors code on Fang, your potions will be the equivelent of a cura. Near the end of the stagger he will take away your buffs so switch to prudent planning after stagger. But only focus on getting haste and protect. I found one of the main keys to this battle is to time it so fang can use smite right before stagger runs out.

Once the four heads come out you will have to use Delta attack to get the stagger again. Once his face comes out you will have to watch out for Thanatosians smile, which can do quite a bit of damage in his second form. So if you keep everyone in the green, or at least at half health it should be fine. Go in to the battle with full TP. this will give you two lifelines (Eidolin and renew). His attack that dazes you is probably killing some of your charecters as well. Even if fang is dazed and the other two are dead switch to protection and revive hope right away or you have no chance. Use foul liquid on Fang and Pheonix down on Sazh. If he poisens you get rid of it immediatly because Thanatosians smile is up next and it will kill you if you are poisened.

Main winning keys:
1. Get him to the threshold of stagger and go evened odds to let vanille debuff and stagger him.
2. Know your debuffs symbols, if you spend too much time testing an item you're gonna die.Item usage is a very big key to this battle so stock up and know where they are.I would reccommend having at least twenty of what unicorn mart has to offer.
3. Make sure you time Fang to use smite or scourge.
4. When you are at deaths door don't hesitate to use Bahamut or renew.
5. Know your paradigms. I found out why I lost a bunch of battles was because I was not familiar of the compostion of my paradigm deck. Know where your items are and be very familiar with imputting manual commands because you will need it.

Bonus tidbit: If you switch to agression near the end of stagger you can get Fang and Sazh to use smite and scourge respectively, causing about 200000 total damage.
Hope this helps.

I grinded up until I got another 70k crystal points to play with. And I went with Fang, Hope, and Sazh and got him in 17 mins. The 2nd half of the battle was a bit of a crawl because I struggled to keep up with healing and he kept dispelling my buffs.

I don't suppose there is a way to prioritize certain spells/buffs for AI controlled party members. God, how I miss the gambit system...

I just did this yesterday,
I used Lightning/Vanille/Sazh
A.COM/SAB/SYN
B.COM/RAV/RAV
C.MED/MED/SYN

I pelted him with paradigm A with Light, and used vanilla to debuff him while Sazh buffed and casted Haste on everyone.
Then switched to paradigm C when HP fell low, then back to A to finish adding buffs and debuffs, then went hard with B. It was a pretty quick fight for me,

Lightning -
HP: 8890
STRENGTH: 2291
MAGIC: 1474
Omega Weapon Level 62,
POWER GLOVE *, POWER GLOVE*, Growth Egg (Pointless because he doesn't drop and CP)
LV.4 on original 3 Roles.

Vanille-
HP:8535
STREGNTH: 1314
MAGIC: 2004
Marlboro Wand *, Magicians Mark *, Sorcerers Mark lv1, Shamans mark lv1.
LV.4 on original 3 Roles.

Sazh-
HP: 4208
STRENGTH: 870
MAGIC: 704
Pieiades Hi- powers lv1., Diamond Bangle*, Imperial Armlet lv1, Whistlewind Scarf lv1.LV.4 on original 3 Roles.

How did you get HP to 8000+? Is there a double-max-hp spell/accessory in this game?

I CP farmed A LOT, in Gran Pulse, when I first got there.
This location was the BEST spot to max out my 3 main roles on the crystarium on the current level in chapter 11 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2f7FNwZfrVY

Then when I hit orphans cradle I just fought the enemies right before you head into Barthandelus' white room, (I saved, quit and restarted because those enemies drop like 60k with a Growth Egg equipped. Then headed back to Gran pulse and just keep using Vanilles Death ability on the Adamantoise because they give 80k with a growth egg equipped. I suggest do Cieth Stone mission 55, and get the item it doubles to CP earned after battles, it makes it sooooooo much easier to get higher HP. Then after I beat the game I saved and it expanded the crystarium again so now I'm working on maxing it out completely currently my main party are all above 10,000 hp. Without add ons like Diamond bangles etc. Plus the crystarium expanded opens up a new accessory slot for each character (once to activate it on the crystarium) So you can add more things like more strength, or HP accessories.

But there are no Double HP accessories to my knowledge, it would have been a useful item though thats for sure.

Good luck on your game!
I suggest going back to the area shown in the video with a growth egg you'll get atlas 10k CP each time you beat them, I can do it in 14 seconds. But when I got to pulse at first it only took 48 seconds so farm away!!!

I would also like to point out that I also started making my characters learn all the other roles when it became available, so they get those little 30+Hp or however much those offered on them as well. But as soon as you beat the game and the crystarium expands again some characters will get 500+ Hp per spot on the grid.

I'm gonna keep grinding and hopefully max out the crystarium this should hold me over a little bit until XIII-2, Hopefully I get a sweet save game bonus for doing it too.

I personally grinded the crap out of my characters before getting to Oerba because everyone told me how much Barthandelus II sucked. Where you level up your characters is up to you, but do it.

Assuming you don't have shrouds:
I actually like the party of Light/Sazh/Vanille or Light/Fang/Hope

Debuff the crap out of Bart with Vanile and buff up with Sazh.
Have a paradigm to heal your characters but there really is no need to heal until you're in the red (assuming you're whaling on him with Tri Disaster, Ruthless, Relentless Assault, Cerberus) He does nothing really bad till about half of his life is gone and if you're being really aggressive, that's what you can get him down to.

Now, the real problem is when he starts casting status ailments and Thanatosian Laughter. I think the reasons why most people die are because they're underleveled or being too passive/cautious. When you're in trouble, go to combat clinic, but otherwise you should be using something with at least two RAVs till staggered, then beatdown, then heal, then beatdown, then repeat.

Everyone seems to have levelled up at this point. I feel very stuck at the moment, I wish there wasn't an invisible timer for Doom, I feel underpowered since I can only slowly but surely get his health down, I believe I can get him to like, half health before he casts Doom, meaning I took waaayy too long to do it.

Where can I go and level up? Since I seem to have missed the opportunity for farming Gran Pulse. I really want to finish this game, I've even put off watching the XIII-2 trailer till I do

Best spot is back in Taejin's tower on the floor with the Pulsework Soldier robot guys. They drop a lot of CP and you can pre emp strike them a lot, kill them, turn around and they'll all respawn. If that's too far for you, you can level up in the soothing sounds of Oerba village.

i prefer to use the party light/sazh/fang but i did switch it up to get the superstar achievement and sorts. but i recommend debuff him asap whilst also buffing your party, it took me a while to beat him too but if u stick in there you'll beat it. just as soon as u have imperil, deshell, and deprotect switch to the paradigm tri disaster: rav/rav/rav than when u stagger him switch to cerberus: com:com:com as long as u stagger him fast and keep up the buffing and debuffing you'll be ok email me if u have any questions on the game.
