I dunno if there is a similar thread to this but I was wondering... have you guys seen what some people think about Final Fantasy characters? They are probably trolls trying too hard to anger the fans but it feels as if "you play final fantasy - you are gay" can someone be gay for just playing a game? they say that some characters look likes girls and to be honest when I was younger back in the day playing FF on nintendo and psx I never thought of that, to me they looked like ordinary young people with cool style and all that...

I started this thread because I watched these dissidia videos made by machinima on youtube and I have to admit they are kinda funny but the comments below are not pleasant and it's getting worse...

what do you think of all this? is final fantasy going to end up having this kind of reputation and how will this affect us? and this question is especialy for guys because if you call a girl homo she might just say "eh, so what?" , is it going to be embarasing to admit that you like final fantasy?
 
Modern "gay" doesn't mean homosexual, it's much more affiliated with geeky, nerdy, shit, embarassing, etc etc etc

In that sense we're all very gay for liking Final Fantasy and joining a website dedicated to discussing its lore.

No we won't all become homosexual for playing FF
 
Apparently all these haters are just "too cool" for final fantasy. We don't want them among our fan base anyway! A bunch of idiots aren't going to deter me from playing Final Fantasy.

However, a lot of the male leads are rather effeminate (feminine in appearance). None of the male leads have big muscles or masculine facial features.

That's partly due to their age.

Cloud was 16 in CC and then spent the next 5 years in a experimental cryo tube thing. When he finally got out, his body was biologically still that of a 16 year olds. People seriously need to get off of Cloud's nuts for being scrawny and boyish. If you compare Cloud in the CGs from CC to AC you can tell the difference, i.e. his face is a bit more "masculine" looking.

Squall and Tidus were both 17 hence their boyish appearance. I don't believe Zidane's age was ever given but I always put it around 18. Vaan was also 17. So the reason that the male leads look "effiminate" is because they are YOUNG. If you look at the older male characters in the series (Barret, Cid, Vincent, Steiner, Auron, Jecht, Basch, etc.) they look a lot more "masculine" because they are older.

I agree with this completely. I want to add that the 16-17 year old hero thing may be because it's supposed to be a fantasy thing, saving the world. Teenagers have those types of adventurist ideas more than adults I would think.
 
yeah I agree with the two last posters and I think that they were trying to make all the CG characters look similar to Amano's artwork
 
I dont know if it matters too much

but when I find out a boy likes final fantasy I dont think of them as any less masculine.
ive played the games, I know they are not girly or anything, anyone who plays FF knows this.
they're just good games.
 
Just to make this clear I didn't mean that you will be gay if you play FF because of what they say, I meant that you will be gay to them if you state that you like FF and all that in the internet, trolls like to make other people angry and they will use that against you
 
Dude. Its 2010. Everyone plays /some/ kind of stupid game these days. Its a good thing. That means us geeks who play FF are finally on par with everyone else. I:ll never be embarrassed to admit I play FF. Final Fantasy games are awesome. Always were. Hopefully always will be.

I guess you:re right about some of the characters looking gay, though -coughkujacough-
 
TBH I think this kind of thing really is a matter of trolls being trolls, a lot of them might just be jealous also that they haven't gotten involved in something that's become so popular. And I certainly don't see anything wrong with some of the male characters looking "effeminate". For one thing, like a lot of people have said, they're fairly young; and for another, I think part of the point of many of the FF stories is that you don't always need brawn and muscles to be a hero. One of the underlying themes I've always noticed in FF is the idea of using your brain, having a good heart, and being courageous in spite of the odds--those things often help the characters accomplish what they're trying to do, and they don't necessarily need "masculine" bodies for that. Plus, if someone's a mage (like Kuja :monster:), there's really no reason for them to have a well-developed body; you could stand there and cast spells even if you had the body of Jabba the Hutt; I actually don't understand why so many of the mage characters in FF are even as fit as they are :confused: But anyway, to stay on track, I don't see anything "gay" about playing FF in any sense of the word; personally I've always thought people who use that as an insult are immature anyway, so that itself supports the argument against such trolling morons even further ^_^ FF is, and always has been, for anyone who likes cool adventure stories--and that's it, period, end of story :mokken:

That's a good point. IMO FF wouldn't be nearly as intriguing if the lead characters were bulging with muscles and overgrown jaws. The effiminate small lead character has a "the meek shall inherit the earth" thing going on which seperates it from other games.
 
i dont mind much about their characters..all i know is that most of them are awesome
 
In I, II IV, V, and VI most characters are 17 and older (excluding children like: rydia, Gau, relm, and polom/porom) but the males have the adult or pre adult late teen faces like firion, Cecil, Edward, Bartz, Sabin, Locke, Setzer ect. though Yang, Edge, Edgar, and Guy have VERY masculine jawline figure and posture
 
I'm quite shocked the developers haven't created a LGBT character, considering there are all these other games (Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, etc) that allow you to have a relationship with the same sex? Does it have anything to do with their culture? That would be strange if that were the case. But provide that they did make a character of the same sex, wouldn't that draw the gaymer fanbase to be more interested in the Final Fantasy series? Or do they fear their homophobic consumers is too large to want to do such a risky thing in the series?

Homophobia is less of an issue in Japan than it is in the West. Historically, there has been no religious denunciation of homosexuality in Japan. However, there is a degree of confusion surrounding homosexual identity in Japanese society. For example, the word 'gay' has been imported from the West but it is commonly associated with transvestites and prostitution. Additionally, the LGBT rights movement is less strong in Japan eg: the Group OCCUR (famous for an anti discrimination case which prompted the development of a legal definition for homosexuality) only has about 350 members.

As such, I don't think they fear including a gay character would scare away consumers. Maybe they just have a different view of homosexuality, maybe identifying with a gay character is less significant over there than it is in the West. :hmmm:
 
Persona 2 Inocent Sin wasnt localized for two reasons:

1) The appereance of Hittler (Wich in fact is the bad guy Nyarlatothep)

2) Because you could engage in a homosexual relationship

gay gamers suffer the same stigma as female gamers: The two groups exist but the demographic is composed of mainly white straight men and so is hard to find characters that appeal to these two groups.
 
I dont think its an issue of ff and hommosexuality but any japanese media and homosexuality. Anyways i dont mind. The series hasnt had any specific lead on homosexuality. The day it will be an issue would be when the main love interest of the main character is of the same sex. But so far only supporting characters and antagonist in which we only assume are gay or not the main feature (kuja)
 
In my eyes, if I knew a male straight person who played FF (oh wait, I do :B), I wouldn't see them as gay. I think as Razberry Knight kinda said; there is some kind of 'link' it seems between men who enjoy Japanese culture and things to do with it and then them being stamped as 'gay'. It's all pretty stupid IMO.
 
This may sound odd but I always assumed that Sabin Figaro from FF6 was gay. During the pub scene with Cyan with the flirtatiousness bar-girl Cyan is blushing like a red tomato and yet Sabin shows no interest within her despite her charm. Plus the tea set he has and I read this theory which makes me ponder Sabin's sexuality hints ever further. Plus wouldn't it be awesome if Sabin was gay ? One of the most strongest characters within FF history; plus he's really kind.:)

Also Lightning... I feel like she's a lesbian. She's quite... "butch ".....:hmmm:

I more than see your point, but I'm not shocked: this is Square Enix. What would be far more shocking would be if they DID do something like that, because it would mean that they actually deviated from their standard-issue Final Fantasy formula and did something new. I don't think it's got anything to do with homophobia or anything of the sort, it's all about the kind of reception such a character would get: a lot of people would practically explode with anger, because it goes against the idea of a "traditional" Final Fantasy. Most JRPGs, even those that are far more original than FF could ever hope to be, are mired in ancient tropes and concepts, and LGBT just isn't in there. That really is something that needs to change, but I can practically guarantee that Square Enix won't be the ones to do it. Look to someone like Monolith Soft or maybe even Gust (there is MORE than enough lesbian subtext in their games already; it wouldn't be a huge step) to make that change before Square Enix.

Anyways, as I said, I would LOVE to see a legitimately LGBT character in a JRPG, even if their character was absolutely crap. Just introducing such a character into a JRPG would be a huge step forward, and if one developer does it, others will follow, and it'll be a refreshing change. That, plus...well, whilst homophobia and the rest is still a huge issue in society, I think we're past the point now (or at least, those of us who aren't complete fucking retards are) of bashing these people solely on the basis that their sexuality is different. I don't see why we can't start having LGBT characters in games outside of fan-based theories that have absolutely no basis whatsoever in the game's canon. We get enough paedophilia (implied or otherwise) in JRPGs, and that is hardly acceptable in society :hmmm:

As for being "gay" for liking anything, well...
