Excuse my absence, I'm sure no one noticed anyway xD. So what I need to know, is what Final Fantasy game my little brother who's 10 should play. He proved his worthiness to play a Final Fantasy game by watching the complete Death Note anime series (at 10, I know... I'm a bad big brother) and he understood at least 75% of it because I asked him some questions about it afterwards. But I honestly can't think of which game he should play. Like, I need an easy one out of them all when it comes to storyline understanding and gameplay difficulty. The only games I own in the FF series are: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13 and Dirge of Cerberus. Which one should he start with? I'm also wondering if he played the older ones, if he'd have trouble reading all the dialogue. I already know he can get through a small novel pretty well.

I'd say 5. It has a pretty straightforward storyline, simple battle system and a not-so-complicating job system.

The newer ones have too much talking and cutscenes so it may be hard for a 10yr old to concentrate, and the older ones don't give you much clue on what to do unless you talk to every single person in every town. 5 kind of has a good balance.

I suggest FFX = very easy and simple to understand but delivers incredibly well IMO,its my favo after all :P

Well, you could go in chronological order and start him off with FFI. Although the game can be frustratingly hard from what I've heard. I've only played a bit of it and I hate the battle system, tbh.

If he doesn't mind reading and doesn't mind older graphics, I'd say start him off with IV. The gampeplay is a lot of fun, it's relatively short and the story isn't nearly as complex as some of the later ones. If it makes any difference, this is the game my brother started off with when he was around 6 and he managed to get through it okay. xD

Yeah... The thing I'm not sure about is if he'd be prepared for the Sphere Grid system if he were to play FFX. I always had trouble with that >.<

The sphere grid can be a bit confusing. And don't even mention that license board on XII. >.>

I would recommend starting with an older game. IV-VII all shared a fairly similar battle system (tweaked for each game of course) and the system was pretty simple and easy to understand. I think one of those games would be a good place to start him off.

Yeah, but those games are known for being non-linear, and I couldn't really help out with IV, V or VI cause I, myself haven't actually beat them yet. I'm thinking about IV, VII or X though.

I don't think he would necessarily. My brother was around eight when he played VII for the first time and he seemed fine on his own. He may have some questions about the storyline or may need a bit of help here and there but I think he'll be okay for the most part. :lew:

Also it's fairly easy to navigate around in VII and the game pretty much tells you exactly where you should go next. In IV, it can be a bit tough to figure out where to go next and also there's no on screen map. Overall though, I think IV would be a good place to start.

And since reading isn't in issue, there's always Gamefaqs if he needs help.

Well I DO have Chrono Trigger packaged with Final Fantasy IV since it's in "Final Fantasy Chronicles", I'm not sure if that would be a good selection or not. I haven't beaten that game either... :\ I think I might stick to VII.

It turns out he's actually 9. He turned 9 on September 1st. I am the worst big brother ever >.< Can't even remember how old he is.

Well if we're talking about a nine year old here, then he shouldn't start off with the more complicated character stat progression and battle systems, so FFX, FFXII and perhaps FFXIII can be slashed from the list. Plus the storylines of the more recent games (especially the very political-driven FFXII) will most likely be too complicated, so it definitely has to be an earlier game.

I actually suggest trying out Final Fantasy IX first. Its story is pretty straightforward to start off with, and the more complicated parts later can be easily explained. FFIX contains a lot of conventional elements of fairytale stories that a nine year old would be rather familiar with from the earlier childhood years, such as the concepts of castles, kingdoms, princesses and so on. FFIX is rather inviting as a whole I would say. The character designs are considered rather appealing for all ages and the gameplay shouldn't be too difficult except for the item ability equipment system that will require a short explanation to start off with.

EDIT: Ah, you don't have FFIX. I guess I should actually read more carefully. xD

just give him 7

its blocks

he probably lieks blocks

cloud has a big sword and casts magic

nothing hard to comprehend about someone killing a chick you love and you turning around and incomprhensibly raping his anus in two

its still badass

everybody wins

Actually, screw whatever I said about storylines, no matter how complicating or simple. Go for the most fun and, in your opinion, the one with the most impact.

I remember when I first played FF, I couldn't care less about the story or the characters; I only cared about killing enemies and levelling up. Now that I'm older the things I value in FF are much different from the things I valued 10 years ago.

Even if he doesn't understand the story, if he enjoyed the game in general he'd be willing to replay it after a while to take in the whole experience the game has to offer.

And seeming as he's your brother he's most likely to enjoy the things you enjoy. So just let him play whatever one you enjoyed the most (y)

I think it is official I'm letting him play VII, he used to watch me play the Final Fantasy games a few years back when I couldn't really understand them myself. xD I want him to enjoy the storyline so he doesn't have to go back and play it again after he's already seen everything once, but vaguely. He already watched FFVII Advent Children Complete and enjoyed it, but probably didn't understand much since he never played the original game. And the most surprising thing I've ever seen him do was either beat Halo 1 and 2, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign without any help on the most part >.>. I think he might have a good time. I'll be sure to ask him questions to make sure he understands what he's doing and doesn't screw himself over in the game like I usually do in all the Final Fantasy games and have to restart... >.<

Start him out with Mystic Quest or FFIX. Both of them should be right up his alley, and I've always thought that FFIX was the best FF of the entire series.

I'd say 9, got one of the simplest storylines IMO, and one of the best games :monster:

I'm probably only saying that because 9 was my first ever game and I played it just after it came out, when I myself was about 8 or 9, and I found it easy enough to understand and play.
It's also one of my favourites so I'm probably biased but... go for 9 :mokken:

Edit: :ffs: just read the post saying you don't own it. Ah well... :8F:
