Final Fantasy game for a 10 year old?

IV is pretty simple. I suppose the storyline is slightly advanced, but generally most of the gameplay tactic is fighting monsters, navigating, and leveling up. It's also a rather brief game, the gameplay for the average gamer is pretty well under 40 hours.

My objective for the past 6 months actually HAS been trying to obtain a copy of FFIX... and judging by what you said about it, it sounds pretty good. But I did see what FF: Mystic Quest looked like, and it actually does look pretty simple. I think I'll somehow get him to play that...

VII would be a fine choice, IMO. The gameplay is not that hard, and if he can follow Death Note he can probably follow the plot well enough. If he has any troubles you can offer some helpful hints.

Otherwise, the ones I think would be a bad idea: I-IV are right out because II-IV can be really difficult, and well, I's kinda boring. I'd also rule out V. It has easy enough to grasp plot and gameplay, but the final dungeon and boss are up there with IV's if I remember correctly, and it would really suck for him to get that far in the game and then get disheartened. VIII's junction system can be damned complex, and the plot is very character development oriented, so I'm not sure how interesting that would be to a kid that age, so I wouldn't recommend that one. I had trouble following XII's plot at 21. Dirge is hardly an FF game, since you put that on the list. XIII.... I wouldn't recommend XIII as anybody's first FF.

So that leaves: VI, which I'm surprised no one has recommended. VII, which you seem to be leaning toward. X would be an okay choice, but I think VI or VII would be a better one. X's my favorite, and the sphere grid's not THAT complex, I'm just not sure how he'd appreciate the plot. Not understand it, appreciate it, you know?

IX would also be a great choice if you had it, methinks.

Though actually, in the end, you're the one who knows the kid and is most qualified to make the call.

To add to the whole "Is the sphere-grid of X too complex?" conversation, I can say that I hardly understood the sphere-grid half the game, yet I still beat the game in a pretty good amount of time. I wasted in that sphere-grid like crazy.

Ahem. *embarassed*

Hey!

I dunno if you want more opinions but :holyshit:

I really don't know what does your brother ennjoy, and how mature he is [ because him being 10 years old doesn't help so much ].

You could give him FF7, and talk with him about the harder parts of the story.

Many people say to give him FF9, I disagree. I think you should leave the PS ones for later. For just wanting him to play more :P

If your'e looking for some simple game, try FF4 [ which has a plot excellent for someone his age ]. If you'd rather make this from the beggining, I suggest FF1 from Dawn Of Souls GBA packagge. It's simple as the original but has better graphics, more ecxiting battles, better dialouges and isn't hard [ prices are made very low, the most grinding time in there is like 15-20 minutes ]. Altough you can't really expect many philosophy or psychology from this game ;)
Don't have Dawn Of Souls? Maybe try a rom?

Personally I would say 6 or 9- the game play is really straight forward, you really only worry about some equipment (which makes sense) and equiping 1 spell/ability learning summon.

I think between the too 9's story is more straightfoward, but 6's storyline is way better.

I would not use 8 (junction system), 10 (sphere grid), 12 (gambits & board), 13 (cause its weakest) and 7 because the storyline is so complex.

I disagree about IX. Despite it having princesses, and fairy tale like kingdoms, the storyline is a bit dark and mature for a young child. What Garnet goes through is a bit rough. FF VII would be a bit too dark for a young child too. Sephiroth etc.
FF V would be too hard. The dungeons, bosses and monsters are a little bit experienced for a new player towards FF. Same with FF IV. I reckon it gets a little too hard in bits, espically with the Evil wall and the Final boss. I would recommend FF X. It's a little bit easier than most FF's, and it has a simple battle system to get started off with. He may need help with the sphere system now and again though, apart from that he'll have heaps of fun.

im going to say 12 since it has good graphics and also a fun battle system that can get him in to wanting points... lol brainwash... seriously though i played my first ff(9) at 12 it was good since i wanted to live in a fantasy world

She nails a lot of it, except you did say "dark" FF X is pretty dark when you think about it. All of the death involved and such with Sin and Yu Yevon.. etc..

All FF's are meant to be darker in nature, they give a backbone to the plot often times.

So if you are old school and you don't mind teaching your little bro from the ground up, start with FF I. It's not a hard plot to understand right off the bad either and makes the kiddo read into the story a little, and not just play for the sheer amounts of FMVs. FF I was the starting block to a great story line based gaming. It wasn't until later they took out a lot of the stories and replaced it with exuberant amounts of Graphics and advanced combats, to now being "ACTION" rpg's instead of normal rpgs.

FF I isn't to bad, yet he'll have to deal with the graphics being subpar. I would say the next move would be FFXI (III on the SNES). Then work backwards a bit.. then finally introduce him to FFVII, once he's had some experience =).

I'm just saying, if you introduce the kiddo into FMVs right away I could see him being disinterested in all the others before FFVII.

Well, may as well comment since I can quite easily remember when I was 10. or 7, for that matter.

BAck when I was 7, I had Final Fantasy 4, 6, 7, and 8 to choose from. Back then, I clearly remember 8 being a pain as I didn't really understand the junction system, but I enjoyed the story. 4 and 7 were easy for me, after I got over my damned habit of being stuck at some parts like the Demon Wall (7) or... well, actually, the Demon Wall for both of them. 6 was frustrating at first, as I also didn't understand Blitzes (up until recently, I didn't use them. Can't do diagonals right with SNES controllers. However, I found that you can put them in different so you don't have to.) but once I did, I had a lot of fun.

So, if your brother is quick to grasp ideas, I'd say one of the four above. 5 is kinda strange, though I do love it, IX has multiple story-lines at the same time, X has a bunch of death, and XII... well, I can't really say much about that one, as I've made the least amount of progress on that one. 3 was good, once I figured out that I need to heal, but I hated, and still do hate, 1 and 2. XIII is fairly linear, a lot of fun, and easy to understand, but I can't really say how he'll react to seeing someone's mom dying. Or to Aerith/Aeris dying, either. I think that's all of them... oh, and XI. XI is fun once you know how Final Fantasy works, as it's an MMORPG, and plays totally different for the most part. Wouldn't advise it. That would be all of them... unless you had other sequels like the Tactics series and the Crystal Chronicles series.

For a 10 year old child, I would have to suggest the Chocobo Tales DS game. That is a Final Fantasy title that's actually geared towards young players. It's a bunch of mini-games woven into a storyline plot, almost a bit like the Professor Layton games. Fun enough to keep even adults entertained, but without anything that a child shouldn't be exposed to, and it's rated E for Everyone.

Well if were talking FF Main series games and none of the side stuff, I would say the best bet is IV or V. There both fairly easy to learn and nothing real challenging at the same time it isn't so easy that the ten year old will be bored so fast, but if were talking about anything Final Fantasy related, I'd say Chrystal Chronicles series is really aimed towards younger players, that one and as Robert_Masters said, Chocobo Tales, which is really another game aimed towards Younger fans.

I'm just saying, if you introduce the kiddo into FMVs right away I could see him being disinterested in all the others before FFVII.
I was going to say the same thing. Once you go from seeing the amazing graphics in some of the later/newer FF's, it might be a turn-off when you go to a game that lacks them.

I would say for a young kid to possibly try FFIII on the Nintendo DS. That way it's still pretty simple, it easy for them to take with them when they go on car rides and they also won't be taking up the TV from mom and dad while playing on a console.

Excuse my absence, I'm sure no one noticed anyway xD. So what I need to know, is what Final Fantasy game my little brother who's 10 should play. He proved his worthiness to play a Final Fantasy game by watching the complete Death Note anime series (at 10, I know... I'm a bad big brother) and he understood at least 75% of it because I asked him some questions about it afterwards. But I honestly can't think of which game he should play. Like, I need an easy one out of them all when it comes to storyline understanding and gameplay difficulty. The only games I own in the FF series are: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13 and Dirge of Cerberus. Which one should he start with? I'm also wondering if he played the older ones, if he'd have trouble reading all the dialogue. I already know he can get through a small novel pretty well.

Start with FFI. And make him play the NES version. Start off right and not with some installment that's recent. Let him appreciate how everything has evolved with the games. Plus, the first FF I played was FFI and I was younger than ten. Let him suffer as I suffered! Just kidding, but seriously, have him start from beginning to end.

FFX is certainly a great choice. The sphere grid is nothing more than going in a circle only when you have the required spheres.
Also, the storyline is very powerful and not to mention pretty intense graphics for a young kid. In my opinion, he will be hooked if he plays this :)
As for me, I played FF7 when I was a kid and I was quite scared
when I got to the part where there was blood all over the place (in Hojo's lab)...
but nevertheless, its personal preference

Yeah I played and defeated 7 when I was young....its a game thats not to hard to understand and you dont truely need a grasp on the materia concept until later on...so you can figure it out as you go.

I would definately say 7....and if you want him to like the games than its a good one to hook him on as well.

not 7 or 9 believe it or not I would actually go with 8 the least amount of people die in that one. Although the battle system is weird its the only one that doesn't have some guy killing everyone in sight, blood everywhere, a whole place about death. FF8 is the best one for a kid. FF10 would be second best. However FFIX is darker then some would think and FFVII is definately not for 10 year olds. Also DEFINATELY NOT 6 either.
