Hi there,

I'm new to these forums and a huge FF fan. I've written a short story, a prequel to FFIX, on WattPad, if anyone's interested in reading it. It's set long before the events of the original game and helps to pad out the history of Gaia.

"500 years before the events of Final Fantasy IX, the world has changed forever. A cataclysmic event has destroyed nearly all civilised life. In the aftermath, a young Summoner named Iris hides among a group of rebels known as "The Dissenters". Led by a mysterious figure, they travel to the edge of the world to find an Eidolon, a God of Gaia, to help them rule over the broken, vulnerable planet. Iris is alone among evil, and will do anything in her power to stop them."

Any feedback/reviews would be really appreciated :)

Alright! Thank you for letting us read your fanfic! I've only read the first chapter so far, but I definitely think I'll be continuing. At first I skimmed through and some punctuation errors and typos popped out at me, so I admit I was worried, but I'm glad I went ahead and read it anyhow.

So, I kind of figured from the dating in the summary that the "incident" in question was Alexander's summoning, and that alone kind of piqued my interest. It's really rare to find people writing fanfics set so far aside from the source material, probably because it takes a lot of extra work and devotion to the source's world-building, not to mention the amount of care and energy it takes to build over the blank spaces. Like, sure, we might not need all this extra lore unrelated to the main story (for the most part), but it's nice to have anyway to polish the outer edges and all that.
Right off the bat you managed to set the scene vividly enough, and I can tell your command of English is good just from the first couple paragraphs. Again, I did still notice some errors in punctuation and spelling, but it was easy to look past once I got into it. It's really nothing a little comb-over won't fix, honestly. At the moment I'm not quite too sure what kind of character Iris is, but I have only read the first chapter so that's just to be expected. I'm especially interested in the character of Kyra and the kind of friction her role in the story seems to cause.

I'll have to read the rest tomorrow when I get off work, but so far I like what I'm seeing!

Thanks so much for reading even just a chapter! I really appreciate it. And thanks for the heads up re punctuation etc.

I've always felt FFIX has more potential than it's closest rivals (like VII) for side stories etc, the whole game is full of wee hints here and there at a whole history of the world. So I thought it'd be fun to pick one aspect of it and try and make a story around it.

Truth be told I've never written any kind of story before but it's something I want to do more, hopefully one day write completely original stuff. I see fan fiction as a way of practising character development, dialogue (punctuation!) etc in a ready made world. Plus, the world of FFIX is so cool it's just great fun to do.

Thanks again for giving it a go :)

Also, just had a quick glance at the comic you've promoted at the bottom, looks great, will be sure to have a closer look!
Ah, yes, that shame-inducing signature... Funny how I call it a "shameless plug" when I feel embarrassed every time I remember it's there lol. Thanks for the interest at any rate! It does follow a similar philosophy in the whole world-building aspect to your story, tbh. But it will be... incredibly long. (muffled sobbing)

But yes I totally agree! There's something about FFIX that just enables players to postulate over what's going on beyond the confines of the screen. I managed to finish your fic last night and honestly I gotta say, I'm glad someone has now covered the possible circumstances that would have connected Leviathan's seal near the Iifa Tree to the Leviathan Alter in Daguerreo. It did always strike me as odd that they would be so far away and nobody made note of that in-game xD

I would love to see more of your writing though, if you ever decide to do more. You definitely seem to have a knack!

Yeah I agree re FFIX. I find it baffling that VII (which is amazing to be fair) and XV (which is definitely not) have so many canon side projects etc and IX is pretty much ignored. Oh well!

What I like doing is picking a little, "insignificant" detail (like Leviathan being sealed at Iafa Tree) and then building a story around it. IX is FULL of stuff like that. I may try it again, or start something new with Iris/Kyra/both.

Had another look at the comic-really enjoyed it, the drawings are great and the story is gripping from the off.To build a whole story around the Excalibur note (which I must confess I haven't seen with my own eyes-getting to disc 4 in less than 12 hours seems impossible to me!) is really cool. And the whole Suman thing, really cool. Looking forward to seeing how it pans out!

I’ve finally managed to read the first chapter.

I find the espionage aspect very intriguing, as well as the way you paint the picture of the radicalisation of the Summoner extremists. The cult-like aspect of their situation is an all too appropriate angle for our times, and that’s been dealt with brilliantly.

When I get time I’d like to read the other chapters.

I really appreciate you sharing this with us too! FFIX is a great game with some of the richest lore in the franchise. I'm always happy when I see it receiving love like this.

What are your plans for this? Is this to become an extended project / novel?

Hi- thanks so much for reading even just a bit of it. I really appreciate it!

To be honest I don't know! I started writing it as practise for writing my own stories, but I actually grew very fond of the characters- I do think at some point I'd like to revisit it. I'd particularly like to get Iris off the island and on to some more familiar places in the saga.

Thanks again for reading :)
