Final Fantasy Timeline Theory (Research Included)

I'm very, very, VERY sorry for double-posting. I had the last part of this theory ready, and nobody had posted. Again, sorry.

Approaching the end of time

After all these adventures, we’re finally reaching the end. I’m pretty sure you can guess what’s left.

Fabula Nova Crystallis
Sometime after releasing FF12, Square Enix announced this mini-series as one big throwback to the Crystals concept. Essentially, every entry will still follow Final Fantasy’s status quo, except for one thing: they all use the same mythos. And so, I will recite said mythos, courtesy of TV Tropes.

In the beginning, the god Bhunivelze had killed his mother, Mwynn, to take full control of the Mortal World for himself. As a result, Mwynn was sent into the Unseen World. Despite achieving his goal of total control of the Mortal World, Bhunivelze became troubled. He believed that Mwynn had placed a curse on the realm of the living so that it would one day be destroyed. To put a stop to the curse Bhunivelze sought to destroy his mother once and for all, but was unable to reach the Unseen World without giving up control of the Mortal World. To find the entrance to the realm of the dead, Bhunivelze created the fal'Cie Pulse, tasked with searching the world for the door to the Unseen World.

To assist Pulse, Bhunivelze soon after created the fal'Cie Etro, but became distraught to discover that he unknowingly created her in the likeness of Mwynn. Bhunivelze gave Etro no powers and to replace Etro, Bhunivelze created the fal'Cie Lindzei, tasked with protecting the world and Bhunivelze himself. With the fal'Cie at work, Bhunivelze put himself into a deep crystal sleep, to be awoken only when the door to the Unseen World was found.

When Pulse and Lindzei were given a task to fulfill by their creator, Etro became distressed over her lack of power and purpose in the world. Etro killed herself and disappeared from the Mortal World and from Etro's spilled blood, Lindzei created humanity who took root and grew in the Mortal World. Etro felt a bond with these creatures she unknowingly helped create, as they, like her, were destined to die.

In the Unseen World, Etro discovered Mwynn being consumed by a strange energy known as chaos. With her last breath, Mwynn tasked Etro with protecting the balance of the universe, for if the balance between the Visible and Unseen Worlds was to be disrupted, the universe itself would collapse. The death of the Mortal World was not a curse, but in fact, fate.

Despite this, Etro did not understand what Mwynn had asked of her as she was consumed by the chaos. Etro became lonely, though she felt affection toward humans, who lived only to die. Etro placed a piece of chaos within each human being, which came to be known as the "heart". So long as humans continue to be born and die, then the universe will remain in balance.

Pulse continued to craft the world as he saw fit, while Lindzei protected the world and crafted the floating paradise of Cocoon for the humans. One day, Pulse and Lindzei absconded from the world, never to be seen again. Many of the humans, in turn, worshiped – and some abhorred – these fal'Cie as gods. Etro, meanwhile, became known as the Goddess of Death, who waited to greet each human as they passed through the door to the Unseen World.

And Bhunivelze continues to sleep until the end of time.

Thank you, TVTropes. So, right away, we learn that Bhunivelze is the bad guy. But let’s rewind a bit. When I was covering FF6, I theorized that Arubboth unknowingly set forward a chain of events leading to the world’s destruction. Fast forward to now. The mythos above, albeit an interesting read, seems to imply that Mwynn created the Mortal World, or at least a certain world that Bhunivelze wanted for himself. That’s enough to make me believe that Mwynn is Arubboth, and Bhunivelze is Pandemonium. But wait. The mythos clearly states that Mwynn was Bhunivelze’s mother. But then again, what’s a mythos? A legend. And what’s a legend? A story that’s been repeated over a long period of time. Let’s look at the standards of validity I made in my first post:

Anything that happened at least 1,000 years ago must vary greatly from how it’s told.

So, for all we know, Bhunivelze could’ve been the parent, or he may not have been related to Mwynn at all. And I checked the end of Lightning Returns, where Bhunivelze himself makes an appearance. I didn’t see him mention Mwynn at all. Though, if he did and I just didn’t notice, I wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t just playing along with what the legend said. After all, there is such a thing as lying. Moving on, we learn that Mwynn is eventually destroyed by something called chaos. And Etro later put said chaos into humans. You know what I think? I think Mwynn’s still alive. Something that can destroy a god that’s already died just by being near it should, in theory, kill a human just as easily when it’s inside said human. As well as everyone nearby, perhaps. And don’t forget, this is a legend we’re talking about. Maybe Etro only assumed Mwynn died, or merely met her in passing. The thing is, the only thing we know for sure is that Bhunivelze only cares about ruling his precious world forever, since he says so himself. So, we begin with the “Lightning Saga,” the collective term for FF13, FF13-2, and Lightning Returns. These games follow the adventures of Claire “Lightning” Farron, who was made a Pulse l’Cie, and later Etro’s lapdog. She kills a fal’Cie, protects the Unseen World, and even squares off against Bhunivelze. However, despite the evil god’s supposed blowing up in the end, Lightning theorizes that he might still be around. Either way, Lightning’s story ends with everyone’s souls inhabiting a new planet that looks exactly like Earth. Next up, we have Type-0, or Agito, depending on whichever you like better, since apparently, these games are in separate timelines. Here, we find four nations powered by four crystals. In the end, we find out that said crystals were put there by a couple of fal’Cie in an experiment to try to open the gate to the Unseen World. Why would they try doing that unless Bhunivelze is, in fact, still alive? I highly doubt that they were just misinformed idiots who didn’t know their master was dead, because every time their experiments fail, they press the reset button on everything, and had already done so over 600 million times. By then, I’m sure someone would’ve told them whether Bhunizelze was dead or not. One should also note that Milites looks a lot like Africa, and Rubrum resembles Italy, or even Greece. Perhaps the crystals terraformed the place? Who knows. Finally, we have FF15, where all the nations used to have a crystal, but now there’s only one left. Sadly, because this game isn’t released yet, that’s all to be said about it. Where did the crystals come from? Did the original crystals survive all those catastrophes? Were they another Type-0 experiment? Will the game even answer that question? We’ll just have to wait, and find out.
